50cc Moped T&G

Simply that - something around the £200 to £300 mark, preferably really simple and really lightweight

Needs to be running, not arsed what it looks like.

Getting incredibly puzzled by silent sellers - one on FB advertised a SH50 in Wigan, £250 - yup, I'll have that for full asking price, messaged him within minutes of his post, he's seen the message but no reply whatsoever - I mean, WTF? Why? Why not just say you have changed your mind, or promised it someone else or whatever.

^^ How much? Is that for a full unrestricted licence? Assume that includes bike hire, test, every bloody thing? Is it not possible to DIY so to speak, buy a cheap 125 and just pay for the tests or is that banned these days? Do you have to do an entire training course?

 

(Pardon my ignorance if this is in reality a cheap price but my experience getting my bike licence cost about £70 all in but that was in 1987 to put it in context so yes, I'm a bit out of touch).

Maybe one for the stupid question thread but why wouldn't anyone over 16 get an 80 or 125cc ped?

Riding sedately with a group of oldish blokes and having a pint and natter over a chip barm is more fun than fishing. Neither of the above bikes I would want to paint yellow and use on the coast to coast run though.

I thought you needed CBT to ride anything under 125? Do you not need one for a 50?

 

Glad I done my full test when I did, bike regulations seem mental now

I passed my test in 1976 and have retained my 50cc licence that was included with the pass at the time.

 

The £700 did indeed take me to an unrestricted bike licence including bike hire.

I had a 125cc on L plates. They were bringing CBT into Northern Ireland so to avoid it I went and done the full test on my 125. Used an instructor for the Mod1 (off road) but done the mod2 (on road) with no additional lessons, you used to be able to view the test routes online so I spent my free time buzzing round the routes and practicing exaggerated mirror looks etc.

 

That got me a full license restricted to 33bhp for two years, after which you can ride anything.

 

The new system looks mental.

Did my bike test in the 80's

 

Been blezzing around on two wheels off and on since 1988, often due to finances as 2 wheels (usually) cheaper than 4.

 

These days its mostly pleasure and parking ( 2 wheels a fuck of a lot easier to park in the town and cheaper as well).

I decided that £700 was not good value and have not done it, so I will not be hogging all the bikes. I do want a 2003 unpainted V-Rod just as a bit of art though.

 

40 years driving, now you know why I have experience of so many cars.

Similar to what I did in 87, I had a car licence already so just did a course for my "Part 1" as it was known then (all off-road, riding around cones etc - don't know if there's a similar thing these days) for £50 incl test.

Then got a cheap 100cc (Suzuki GP100) which I fixed up cheaply, checked out the local test centre course which had inconveniently moved to the other side of town from when I'd done my car test 3 years previously (on my then doorstep!), spent a couple of days riding round and round the course doing all the checks etc as per the training sheets I'd got hold of on my Part 1 then did my "Part 2" (the road test - with the examiner standing on the corners of the streets believe it or not) which cost about £14, passed, then sold the GP for a profit.

I suspect it would be a lot harder to pull this off nowadays sadly.

Will do. It's at the shop of the chap who does all my bike MOTs, but he had a bad off recently and he's only opening Saturdays at the mo. I'm working next Sat, but if you're not in a massive rush I will get pics and such the weekend after.

Prior to its current sabbatical it earned an honest crust (geddit?) delivering pizzas. It RAN WHEN PARKED about a year ago (I can vouch for this), but the battery is now toast, and consequently the price is reduced to £50 as is.

I reckon old mopeds must be the most numerous vehicle slashed (dumped/hidden?) away in corners of garages, sheds, gardens etc in the country. As they usually get owned and thrashed by 16y/o's or those that know/care little about them until they break, then they get put to one side as they move on.

 

If you want one, I think an ad in the local paper or 'Free-Ad'/Loot type papers along the lines of 'Old moped wanted - anything considered'. If nothing else, should produce some amusing weirdo responses!

 

We used to do a similar thing when I was at uni but for motorcycles, was great fun and we made a fair bit of money clearing folks unwanted two-wheelers for them, often getting them for free or a pittance. They were normally hugely grateful.
