And Mr. Sterling i might just take you up on that if it survives a few more months. Dont know what the current mats are out of.. but its not an 800 i can vouch for that 8)

Cool, we could do a swap or summat. I'm sure I can find the non-Rover 800 mats you got your 800 a home.

How are you getting on with the Birmingham-registered Diesel monster?

Sorry gentlemens ive only just seen this.

Rover is GR15 Love it, In the time between updates i decided i best fix the brass monstrosity expansion tank, Plan was to bodge away with some JB Weld (yank shite).. Old man told me not to be a daft twat and get it done proper, He told me he could of sworn grimsby had an old fashioned radiator repair shop off a backstreet somewhere..

Old boy managed to get a number and phoned the guy, Go on monday take your expansion tank he says..Off i went,

The lad folded a bunch of brass into the seam for a repair and it seems to be holding up well, Good lads..Gonna plug them anyway.

They get lots of work with the ploughing contest tractor lot but i love that guys in sheds like this still exist so i though id help Re. publicity

Paul at Grimby radiator specialist,Address: Dunmow Street, Grimsby DN31 2RE
Phone: 01472 355544

Sound bunch one of the lads had a 2.4 vm engined RRC In beige, Desert storm he said!

I Then noticed the tyres on the front seemed to be approaching the wear markers with some alacrity.

So onto camskills to see what replacement 15'' tyres i could get, uniroyal rainsport 3's at 30 quid ish not bad. Being the complete and utter tightwad scroogeface bastard i am i decided i could do better so i thought i would scour ebay/scumtree and try and find a set of rover alloys with tyres on to save some dough.

Found a set of the 16'' ones that where OEM on the vitesse turbo lovely looking things, With 5mm tread on 2 hankooks a pirelli and a conti, Lad would take £40 when asked..Oh and a fifth wheel with a chinese death ring fitted was thrown in to boot.

It worked out at £67 including diesel.

Off i went to chopwell tyne and wear for the RIMZ, Good drive up there besides the fuckpigging A1 Having 10 miles of 50mph limits

Guy had a 600 and had got crashed into, Plenty of shite on his interesting road Marx/Lenin terrace in this mad village.

Spots included a paint rollered BX and a few ronnie pick spec picassos.

Nice lads big into rovers, Had a good run back , This thing is a stormer as laquer peel said before, Fantastic cruiser kept up fine with all the scorn faced audi drivers looking down their noses at fine £260 conveyance.

But no serious its a really nice car, Better than it should be at that money!!

Ive also changed the coolant now to the correct pink shite, oil filter, oil, air filter cant resist sadly.

But alas life isnt perfect, It seems to be quite the tempremental starter

Battery is kicking out 12volts and seems to be charging okay so i dont think its the alternator or that,

Next time it sees its arse and refuse to start i might give the starter motor a knock see if i can rule that out.

Heres the thing though.. Its starts fine for about a week after ive put the battery on trickle charge, If it will not start then it starts off a jump no problems.

So is it battery earths that need cleaning up??

Any of you fine chaps experienced battery drain in an 800?

It looks great on the Vitesse rims. I'm an electrical fud but last time I had a problem like that I pulled fuses with the ignition off until I found that the interior light circuit was drawing 12v.

In regards to the pas failure.. It happened when i stalled the car like a pillock, I instantly though it would just be a fuse or something but it seems none exist.

Basically i stalled the car and all power assist dissapeared steering just went super heavy and though drivable its heavy as you like and quite notchy..

Tried a pas flush but nothing changed connected a hose to the reservoir and the sytem still pumps it seems.. can the vanes wear on a pas pump and cause a lack of effiency or is it either they work or dont? Rack has no leaks pipes have no leaks!! Is my rack goosed??

Regards chaps! :)

Ive toyed with that idea but they are a 825sd specific part and 100 quid on an exchange service!

I connected a hose to the reservoir and cranked the car it pumps it filled a bucket quite quick.. but i dont know if it is working at sub par levels?

Aux belt and everything is tight! Shame i cant get a pump from a scrappy in fairness!

You had a look on ebay ?

I had this problem on a Vectra and it turned out to be the rams in the steering rack!! Hoping its not that for you - I'd try a pump off ebay first.

Thats the thing mate no pumps on ebay! plenty for non diesel 800's otherwise id just swap it for a punt!

Racks appear for 25-30 quid often though so i wonder if its worth just swapping the rack?

Cheers!

Double check the diesel doesnt share the same pump, I had a Picasso 1.6 petrol with a failed pump  and turns out the diesel had the same pump.

To be honest, I'd replace the lot then you know its done and is going to be right. Before doing that though it might be worth a garage just having a look see if they can spot anything.

Right, you got 2 options; the engine is a 2.5 VM Motori engine which is also used in the 2.5 Scorpio TD and the Jeep Cherokee Diesel. Presumably they probably also share the same steering pump so it might be worth sourcing the via these rather than searching via Rover 800 as parts for these usually carry a premium just because it says: "Rover 800".

If that fails, try the Rover 800 forum, there are a few parts hoarders on there who might have the pump for you.

I did actually try and test the pump i plugged the return port in the reservoir and rigged up a bit of hose the pump did pump i would say at maybe hosepipe pressure levels? is there a chance its running at a low efficiency?

Im gonna sign up to that rover 800 forum now.. I dont think the chrysler/jeep pumps fit hopefully somene can prove me wrong?!

I obviously cannot help in any useful way but I just wanted to say that this is genuinely one of my favourite cars on this forum.

I'd have transplanted the diesel engine into my 825 Sterling after it greneded its head-gasket if I had been adorned with the necessary skills...

Cheers!

Sorry fella, I don't know whats deffo gone, I'm no mechanic and have barely seen an 800 diesel let alone ever driven one. Only reason I say Jeep/Scorpio pumps is because they share the same engine and as I say -presumably- the same ancillaries, though happy to be proved wrong.

EDIT; Jeep Cherokee Diesel pumps look similar, they may be able to be made to fit, but then thats a risk. If it's the pipes, track down the pipe itself and get Pirtek to make you one. I had a PAS pipe break on my old 820e, bodging alway broke anyway so Pirtek sorted me a new one out for about £60 all in.

Re. pipes.. its all dry as fuck so i dont think any leakage is occuring, Wonder if removing the pump and inspecting it might give me some idea of if its goosed or not?

If you can remove it, inspect and see what's what. If not, have a butchers and see if it's the same as the Cherokee pump at some motor factors. They should have some on the shelf as believe it or not the Cherokee I'd still a pretty popular vehicle.

Also, have a word with the site admins, they might be able to change the spelling of your username.

Weird for steering servo to fail all of a sudden like that, without an obvious massive oil leak.

I think I would jack it up with both front wheels off the ground and spin the steering lock to lock, with and without the engine running. See what I could see, hear and feel, hoping for a clue.

With engine running, can you hear the pump straining at full lock, both ways?  (I have driven one of these so I realise hearing anything above the VM engine's rattle is a bit of a challenge)

Pump should make straining /moaning noise when the steering gets to the end of it's travel and you try and force the steering wheel a bit further.

If the steering wheel is free, the fluid is pumped around the circuit continously and the resistance the pump "feels" is minimum. When you turn the steering wheel against some resistance the fluid control valve closes a bit and the pressure builds up to provide the asistance.

If you can force the steering against the end of it's travel and the pump doesn't complain I reckon you're safe to assume the pump is broken.

What about relief valve?

The pump is capable of pumping much more than the pressure needed to turn the wheels and any excess just recirculates via the relief valve. Perhaps stalling it caused a spike which broke the spring? If you have a look over the pump body for a bung......remove this and you will likely find a spring which acts against a ball bearing.

I can't see that stalling can suddenly fuck up a gear pump pump....blow something yes.....fuck it no!

Ive had a butchers alf but i cant spot a bung/valve its just a smooth casing with an inlet and outlet port.. Unless its internal in this instance?

Cheers.
