Okay righto lads ;)

Thought id better do a collection thread for this as ive had it over a month now

This prime bit of shite caught my eye on the tat thread que me making a post enquiring about the finer points of vm motori's  2.5TD engine. Turns out shiter Laquer peel was planning on plumping for the same silver heap so chivalry ensued and i asked him are you having it etc etc.

Turns out no go ahead squire, So gixen sniping software set up max bid at £327.

Went out because the suspense was killing me returned late on that night to find myself the owner of a rover 825sdi for the princely sum of £260.66 , Jesus :D :D

So que a bit of messaging to and fro with the hard to get hold of seller (Might be better off enlisting derek acorah fuck me..)

Get hold of him about 3 days later train tickets sorted, Hop on my conveyance to sunny scunthorpe.

Was expecting the seller to be an old giffer (rover generalisations sorry) turns out to be a youngish lad.

V5 sorted he hands me the keys off i trundle down the A180 no pez shot as the seller had left half a tank in.

Kept it quiet from the old bid for 3 weeks so just had it doing the rounds on street parking, Fully admitted to now and parked under a tree at home.

Whats it like well great.. Ive always had e38's e39's in the past but i love british shite it just feels right i cant put my finger on it

I had some 15w/40 lying about from an old job so oil and filter plus an air filter got done for £7 .. well why not.

Cracked expansion tank though.. so Im going to try patch it till i can find a secondhand one arf!

I weighed in a bunch of metal in yesterday and already had some old beard trying to buy it!

Regards and pics below chaps. ;)

Haha ive been toying with sticking one of these on the back

s-l500.jpg

The seats are out of vitesse turbo apparently. One bolster tad on the shabby side but nice none the less.

Found the front vin plate in the centre armrest and the front crossmember's blue so yeah provenance isnt looking great on this one.

Cheap mind.

It's a sub-£300 Rover, the nearest thing to provenance you can hope to find is a Waitrose shopping receipt with "herbs de provence" on it lingering in a footwell.

Alan could have saved Peartree Productions if he'd bought an 800 with the efficient* and modern* VM diesel.
I think a Volvo 850 header tank is a common replacement for the shite 800 item.

Yes!

I had one of these - my first 800 actually - and found it a funny old thing but it started off my Rover lust!

So:

a) Header tank in these is unique to the diesel - an all-metal monstrosity which cracks along the seams for fun. I made futile attempts to patch mine up with Plumber's Mait and other concoctions, gave in and bought a secondhand one (back when such things were available), which lasted 50 miles before promptly doing exactly the same. If you can fix it, +500 Shite Points are yours.

B) Engine parts just do not exist. Although the VM unit seemed to be in virtually every car during the 90s, all the ancillaries seem to be specific Rover jobs. eg aux belt tensioner was non-existent 6 years ago, let alone now.

c) Gearbox seemed to eat oil like nothing else. I always knew it was time to top up because it started shaking some serious maracas at idle.

Bodywork/chassis business is all pretty much 800 standard, so keep an eye out on bottom ball joints, fuel filler necks.

Rover800.info has a load of useful stuff over there, but even that's light on diesel specific stuff.

Those seats look decent btw - my Vitesse has the same and the bolster wear is mega common, yours is looking pretty good by comparison.

Ive got some jb weld im going to try that tonight, Can you drive a car on a weeping expansion tank indefinately anyway? Its one for the sqa thread but im only a hairy arse mechanical fitter i dont know that much about cars , Arf!

And mercdade those arent my seats!! I was just too lazy to get a picture my bolster is a bit shagged!

Weeping probably won't cause you a problem, but mine was spraying and emptied itself after 50 miles.

Mine had an interesting history too - it had 330,000 miles on it when I bought it (ex taxi, complete with 'no smoking' stickers still present), but under the green bonnet was red, as was the crashbar and the inner wings. Everything forward of the windscreen was from a red car.

The speedo never worked (so the mileage never moved) and the reversing light was also wired up to something musical which played a little jingle like a wacky Christmas tie. Someone had disconnected the reversing light switch by slicing the wires, possibly out of blind frustration at the noise, so obviously I connected it up to a 30p click switch in the car and played it whenever I was bored.

'Ere, welcome to the Rover 800 owners club Laser.

I have 3 in that shape of 800 (the Mark 2) those being;

1. An 825 Sterling with a KV6 engine that still goes even with a very leaky radiator.
2. 827 Sterling
3. 820i SE - Still awaiting repair and soldness.

I have never actually ever tried an 825 Diesel with the VM Motori engine. They were also in the Mk1.

I've got some parts (particularly floor mats) which includes a Silver wing for a Mk2 aswell.

Well done chap! :D

Thanks for the kind words chaps, Its turning into a bit of a long MOT/General mare with the Audi 100 so this is hopefully going to be the WBOD

And Mr. Sterling i might just take you up on that if it survives a few more months. Dont know what the current mats are out of.. but its not an 800 i can vouch for that 8)

I really need to drive one of these at some point. I reckon the throb of the four-headed monster would be an interesting contrast to the

irreproachable smoothness of my KV6. Or something.

I bet it pulls well and probably suits the relaxed nature of the car pretty well. I actually don't think the KV6 suits the 800 very well. It's a bit of a screamer and should have gone in the MGF.

Come to think of it mine's probably the worst spec possible. Fuggin love it.

I've driven a fair few 825s.  Sold a few too.  Pound for Pound, they were the pick of the 800 bunch and I say that as somebody who hates diesel.  The gearbox is a Chrysler lump believe it or not.

Here's my old one. RIP GONE 2 SOON, I drove it for a while without clutch hydraulics and broke the Chrysler gearbox. Fucking storming car though, it went really well on boost. Drove from the Highlands to Bloodstock on 100% veg oil back when it was cheap.

Ooo err ;) i like that mate is that nightfire?

Whats the crack with running these on veg? is it worth trying 50/50 first with diesel if the condition of the fuel pump/injectors isnt known?

Im presuming a fuel filter change would be prudent first things first?

Ta lads.

Aye, an early base spec R17 825D in nightfire.

The VMs I've owned have been happy on strong mixes of veg, carry a spare filter but wouldn't worry too much if it's new oil you're using.

I'm sure when these first came out, the oil filters were various brands within the Rover/Unipart box.  Like VM or JEEP branding.  We once had a leaking sump on one and a cylinder head gasket or something go on another.  They were easily fixed however.
