Changing definition of shite

Saw a Fiat Tempra saloon earlier and instinctively thought, 'f*ck me, a Tempra' in the same way I might think 'f*ck me, an RWD Starlet' or 'f*ck me, a BMC Farina'. I suppose the Tempra did cease production quite a long time ago but this time last year I wouldn't have been reaching for the camera. I had a similar reaction to a mk1 Seat Toledo the other day too. Trying to second-guess what's next to decline into imminent extinction is an interesting game; I've made a mental note of the number of Kia Shumas left...Anybody else experiencing this phenomenon?

I would think virtually everything built before 1993 qualifies as shite mainly on the basis of rarity. Theres a fair amount of newer stuff thats almost vanished too, off the top of my head -Seat MarbellaRenault 21 SavannahAudi 80Alfa 164plus all sorts I just can't remember...

There's quite a few cars that if I saw today, would be getting the camera out but last year would be far more common....Wedge-shaped Rover 200Ford SierraPeugeot 309Austin/Rover/AR Metro (pre-114 shape)E28 BMWMk2 AstraLast-shape CarltonFiat TipoFiat UnoMost of these are based on cars friends (or even teachers in a couple of cases) had, so was used to seeing them every day, and then all of a sudden realised there were none left.

I was only thinking on my way into work this morning how you don't see MkII Astra estates anymore. In fact apart from the odd hatch still about, estates, Belmonts, Astravans, and Astramax's especially have disappered from view. I stopped to take a picture of a late 80s Belmont the other day on the way back from a night on the town. I reckon the MkIII Astra won't be all that long for this world either...MkIII Granadas, the pure 80s / early 90s ones are a good spot now. Sapphires catch my eye, although I always liked them anyway ever since dad had one in the late 80s / early 90s.Renault 5 Supercinq - dying out, Renault 19 - dying out, saw an early Xantia a few days ago & looked at it twice! XMs of all types are a good spot, early MkV Escorts, Saab 9000s, a MkII Carlton estate seen in my neighbourhood recently warranted a picture. On the flip side I can still report (and never ceased to be amazed by) a healthy abundance of K10 Micras & N11 Sunnys! :D:lol:

Anything pre-1990 gets my interest at the moment, through rarity. And (on a personal note), I must be the only person who drives a Peugeot 405 in my area and doesn't wear a hi-vis jacket while doing so, so a sighting of one with a driver in normal attire is a rarity too

Would like to add MkII Fiestas, early MkIIIs, Cavalier MkIIIs, Passat MkIIIs, early Citroen AXs, proper Fiat Pandas. On the flip side still see loads of MkII Golfs, late 205s, 80s / 90s Volvos, E30 BMWs, MkI Mondeos, early Omegas, early 90s Civics, mid 90s Rover 200s, Protons....

Saw a Kia Mentor a few days ago. P reg but ticked all the boxes: Matt White, Four-door saloon, Poundland wheeltrims. Is that the newest candidate in with a good chance?

Sounds very similar to one I saw except this was a hatch. Plain white with grey bumpers & it had me looking at it wondering if there could be a better example of a completely unremarkable povo spec car in this day & age. A car bearing it's 'I'm at the bottom of the ladder' credentials for all to see! These days different levels of spec on cars are much less obvious, on the outside anyway, sporty ones apart.

Passat MkIIIs

Very valid. Haven't seen a grille-less example for a while now - will be keeping my eyes peeled. Although that could well be mainly due to Jersey syndrome where they didn't sell many cars in that market segment anyway...What do you judge to be a "proper" Panda? Early 80s tin-fronted one...?

Oof there are loads. One that stands out is the Chrysler Neon as my Gran nearly bought one when they were new. At the time I thought they looked really modern and radically styled. There is one on my drive to work that is looking rather worse for wear now.PS My Gran bought a Civic instead.

I am having a real problem seeing anything from the 90s as 'classic', it seems so recent.

Most "classic" cars are completely unappealing and boring to me, as they are to most people on this forum I imagine
Depends what you class as classic?, I love anything 60's and 70's and even a bit of late 50's, (Ford Consuls/Zephyr etc). But i have no interest at all on vintage cars, which i would class as anything up to 1950.

I love '80s and '90s dirge, I guess it's because it's when I was growing up.Most "classic" cars are completely unappealing and boring to me, as they are to most people on this forum I imagine
I (and insurance companies) would say classic=20+ years old.

Ah, but not ALL insurance companies. The figure varies widely, from 10 to 25. My 2CV was on a classic policy from a mere 18 years of age and no, it isn't because of the type of vehicle necessarily either - VW Bettle, defo classic but my mate had a nightmare trying to get classic cover for his Nineties mexican built one.

Any that aren't of the 'Nu Gen', so from 1980 - 1995 (?), in my eyes it's like the difference between the old Mini & the BMW Mini and the old rear engined Beetle & the modern day Beetle shaped Golf. Except I prefer the 'Nu Gen' Panda to either of the other two as it still sets out to do what the original did without being a gimmick. On the way home I thought of some others.....the Skoda Favorit = fading away and the first cars wearing the Daewoo badge; the Nexia & the Espero, definitely rare sights now. It's saying something when you're just as likely to see an old MkII Astra hatch as you are the car which took so much from it a few years later, the Daewoo Nexia. The situation's pretty much the same now with the Espero / Sierra!

I presume you mean Cavalier Mk2, Fords had nothing to do with Daewoos.
Ok, I'll let you have that one, makes sense with the Astra / Nexia connection I suppose! Thought I'd heard it was Sierra based, I can see shades of Sierra in it anyway...In that case, the Espero doesn't have it quite so bad, you'll probably see an Espero before your next MkII Cav!
