..not so long ago in the big picture, especially if your grandad is still alive.  If he is.. then might I suggest you spend some time with him talking and in particular listening, and then writing those recollections down. That's living history for you ..better than anything you'll get from a book.  You, and probably your own grandchildren, will be so glad you did.!  ;)

who's expected to win in your own reenactment. ?

Absolutely. He is still with us fortunately. I think I could listen to these guys (and gals) all day with their first hand accounts of things from back then, as you say it's living history and so much is lost forever when these people aren't around anymore.

I know he had a few lucky escapes. One was in this country on return from a mission when his Lanc got into difficulties. They all had to bail out in the end, but I think one of the guys on board didn't manage to get out in time sadly.

He also ended up in hospital at one bit, but while he was in hospital his plane and crew were still flying. One day they came back after a bombing mission and they landed but somehow another Lancaster came in to land at the same time! Apparently the other Lanc landed on top of my Grandad's one, killing both crews and destroying both planes. Such a grim sad thing to happen, especially at home not over enemy territory. Spooky really as if Grandad wasn't in hospital he'd of been with them, and my mum and indeed myself wouldn't of ever existed! Weird to think about.

With my own little reenactment it'll be a German victory! Mainly because all I'll have is German armour!

I'm hoping to make up a nice little collection of these 1/16 scale tanks, from all sides, but they are rather expensive so it may take a while.

They are good though, operating BB firing guns with full recoil effects, metal tracks and fully operating torsion bar suspension, sound and exhaust smoke gennerators... The lot! I think my neighbours are going to think I'm absolutely mad!

wow epic ! ..weird feeling indeed.. quite humbling to think about such things..

If you do get around to writing up these tales of adventure then two tips..  1. try to recall and record the expressions your grandad uses.  The subtly of his colloquialisms makes all the difference to how the real live experience comes across, and in the long term of your remembering him.   And 2. however bad your hand writing appears, I'd recommend you hand write these tales.. Do him proud.., somehow it's so very much more personal and long lasting than typing something into a computer.

And if I might suggest - do it soon, sad reality is that he's no spring chicken.
