Mixed news on this today.

 

Good - the new front springs have arrived:)

yes I have to agree, unfortunately your chassis number pre-dates the chassis number fitment criteria and therefore this clutch is not suitable for your Toledo.

The hunt for a clutch continues..

 

I'd recommend eBay chap smurdle based on the effort that has gone in to help me track the correct clutch.

Didn't the Toledo's run the same 1.6 as the base Octavia 75bhp?

 

Edited to add the above is the later AEE engine code, the earlier one is 1F, smaller clutch disc, but similar engine same output (later is MPI)

Today was a day for success. It had been decided.

 

I met my Brother and Split_Pin of this here parish at the Fu'Gutty shack and we set to work.

 

First job was to apply the uggadugga to the topmount bolt.

With this slackened off we could turn our attention to the bolts holding the hub to the strut.

 

Application of a short breaker bar had them moving and free in no time.

 

Pulling it off the car was simple and allowed inspection of the obvious issue

The topmount was removed, and the spring seat split off.

 

I had bought 2 new springs, and will likely do the drivers and possibly swap the struts for new once an MOT has been achieved

Judicious use of the uggadugga saw the new spring compressed and fitted in jig time

That done it was time for a pre MOT checkup.

 

All this revealed was a need for an H1 headlamp bulb and the fact that the strike plates for the lights in the bootlid needed cleaning to give foglamps and reversing lights.

 

 

 

It's 1 bulb away from being in for an MOT

It went in.

 

Unsurprisingly we got a fail.

Bulb pattern issue was me fitting the H1 retaining spring incorrectly. Now fixed.

 

This is up in the air to get fixed.. remonstrating fluid already applied.

We'll lube up the load sensor and try to work out how to tighten up the handbrake lever - anyone any thoughts?same as MK2/3 Golf

Not a bad fail, what is a load sensor?

A valve on the rear brake line that senses if the boot is loaded (changes angle). It controls the amount of braking force to the rear of the car.

 

Very little force is sent if running light, more if the car is loaded.

 

This car has drums rear, discs front and no ABS.

 

Most modern cars use ABS to manage the braking force at each wheel.

The use of "insecure" rather than "no reserve travel" probably means that your extraordinary strength has ripped the handbrake lever bracket off the floor panel.

 

It's a relatively common 1980s/1990s VW problem, and one that is easy to fix with a few tack welds.

What he said^

The handbrake is attached to an L shaped bracket which bends away from the driver and peels up from the floor. It's the only welding fix I've yet done to a car.

Repairs have been carried oot.

 

Bulb clipped in correctly,

 

Front driver's side spring removed and replaced.

The handbrake tightening turned out to be a doddle - just two 13mm nuts to tighten.

And some remonstrating fluid plus frantic waggling (fnar) saw the load sensing valve unsiezed.
