nisfan
Started blacking up the sills, need to get some plastic primer for the plastic bits.Filled door photobombing the picture, In an effort to make it easier to spray i covered the whole front so had to brush paint the bit below the grill, I quite like it like this, no spoiler and white instead of black behind the plate, reminds me of a 505 for some reason captain_70s, worldofceri, Richard and 3 others

nisfan
I sanded the shit out of it, used orbital sander, no use, belt sander, left gouges, I was left with a block of wood and 80 sand paper, the red oxide was tough and layed on thick, I didn't want to spend all winter sanding it, took me about 30 hours all in, not worth doing anymore for a turd

DodgyBastard
Been playing with this turd today, I've deliberately avoided taking photos of this side because of the scabby wheel arch.Today, this happened. Nisfan kindly cut out the metal so I could weld in some new metal. DodgyBastard
From this DSC_0141 by srblythe, on Flickr To this Renault 18 GTD Welding by srblythe, on Flickr A skim of filler and some paint and it'll look better than it did anyway. There's no point in spending hours and hours welding a car that no longer belongs to me for free. Nisfan is happy with how it has turned out and plans to continue filling and finishing it tomorrow. worldofceri, theorganist, loserone and 1 other

Jim Bell
If I had have bought this a few years ago it would be the side of a dishwasher by now. Good on you lads up there putting the hours in and dragging it right again. To be commended. Plus, its a festive colour. DodgyBastard
DSC_0683 by srblythe, on Flickr Not finished but not far off. Check out the quality sill repairs! DSC_0678 by srblythe, on Flickr I figured they would be painted black or plastered with underseal so who gives a fuck? The rest is done to a reasonable standard considering I did it for free, it was decent practice, I wouldn't want to take money for a job that I was pretty much using to practice my welding and bodywork skills. I used 1.2mm thick wire to weld the repair panel on, I messed around with the machine settings as I welded it, The first blobs went on with low penetration so I upped the amps and tried again until It was fusing nicely and not blowing holes through the parent metal. Renault 18 GTD Welding by srblythe, on Flickr The welding looks pretty bad at this point but after using a cutting disc to dress the weld down it looked a bit better. Renault 18 GTD Welding by srblythe, on Flickr It still looked a bit lumpy at that point but after the filler was applied then sanded it started to really take shape. DSC_0675 by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_0677 by srblythe, on Flickr I don't often put up photos of my car bodywork practice because there is usually someone there to comment that they don't think my welding is any good or whatever but I'm quite happy with the overall result and Nisfan is pleased too. captain_70s
I seem to recall that arch being pretty damn non-existent back when I saw the car in 2015, I'd have fiberglassed it like a complete tosser, good on you for bothering to put new metal in at all! nisfan
Many moons ago me and FOAD explored an old hospital that was also once a motor spares type shop, we found in a damp cellar a host of 80s car graphics many of them were knackered due to water but we manged to save a few, one of them was a roll of black stripes.Im thinking of fitting these to the 18 and ive mocked up a picture of it, yay or nay? nisfan
Also in a swap i now regret i swapped the cavalier for a Volvo 340 'drift' car, its fitted with a 2.0 16v clio williams engine, Its stripped out doesnt run great and now the welded diff has shat the bed, all in all a bad move, its fast though!DSC_0233 by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_0231 by srblythe, on Flickr dome, KruJoe and Lacquer Peel
KruJoe
Just catching up with this, sadly some of your older pics aren't showing for me. I do quite like that 340 Williams, with standard bumpers, trim and diff, it'd be a brill daily sleeper. I like those stripes, though how about the other way up, just above the black sills?
