I must be insane.

The Corsa (despite opinions to the contrary) received much praise at the Scottish Car Show this year and after spending a fair bit on the bodywork, my plan was to keep it off the road this winter and buy a pocket money shitter to see me through the winter.

I was made aware of a Renault Megane Mk1 on EBay which appeared to be heading for a very low end price.

Having never done 'real' Autoshite before, I nervously made a few cheeky bids and to my surprise, bidding ended at £159. The high mileage of 155k may have put people off.

7 months MOT, honest advert and no rust visible in the photos, I left work this afternoon to travel from Glasgow to Port Seton to collect my win.

It surprisingly drive almost faultlessly back home, which was quite a long motorway run. Everything worked as it should with just a faint whistle from the front brake and a growly rear damper. Great, I thought!

Got it home, then 5 minutes later, I went to move it into the drive and it just refuses to restart. Engine spun fine but just refused to fire. The lady I bought it from said you had to take your time in turning the key through the positions and letting all lights go out before firing. Eventually it fired up, thank fuck and I moved it to the corner of the drive.

Thankfully my wife was ROFFLE at all this which was good as this was better than her being angry at her pillock of a husband who just dragged home a non starting elderly Renault!

Here it is: image.jpeg

It's a 1.4 16v Authentique spec. Body condition is actually pretty good with no rust that I can see anywhere.

I have no idea why it refused to start but that is one thing I don't think I can live with so unless it's a cheap fix then it's going back on Gumtree, unless anyone here wants another raffle.....

There was an updated crank sensor and end of the wiring loom for those . Was usually a hot start fault too

Crank sensor was my first thought, my Corsa had this problem years ago and that sorted it.

These Renaults have aged surprisingly well, especially when not blighted with doom blue.  I hope the problem is a small one and easily overcome.

About an hour before I picked up the car, she asked if she could get one of those Kitchen Aid thingies and I said yes as a sort of insurance policy in case this happened.

Cheers Kiltox, I will try both of those things.

In all honesty though, I've had a right old war this year with the Corsa running issues and taking on another problem isn't one I have headspace for right now.

When not starting, but turning over, is the red immobiliser led flashing rapidly?

If so, then key repair.

If not, then likely crank sensor. As two-stroke said, there is updated wiring for it. Even if it's been done, the sensor could kaput itself again - especially at this age. Cheap part and easy to do - no need to go under the car. First port of call is to take it off, give the tip a good clean (especially if it's rusty) and slightly splay the pins out in the connector of the sensor.

Thanks SIC, that's v. helpful, appreciatee that . I couldn't say I recall noticing the led flashing although I did notice that it had one whilst cowering in the car from my neighbour! I will check again at the weekend to see what's what. Sounds a cheap fix whatever it is!

I had one of these 'back in the day' when they were still newish; 5 or 6 years old; got it outta the breakers yard I was then working in, and it was a repossession deadlocked with no key - the car was 'wages' for that week LOL, and I remember everyone thinking I was mad as these were littered round the country in various towns in folks avenues with flat tyres, full of moss DEADLOCKED...

...anyways, I got a new pair of keys - one was the magic 'coded key' - as SIC mentioned, the sorcery, is all down to the LED light n how must flashing it does; I cant remember the exact sequence n 'dance' to get it recognising the new key as my sphincter was puckered tight ("sold as seen or you can part her out from the yard!!), as to whether or not id get it revived, but all was well in the end n there was never any hassle from it again- sold it to my brothers mate who used n abused it for many years till the pikey's knicked it from his underground car park... mine was a 'stellar' but lethargic 8V but it did the job very adequately - went on forever as my brother's mate never serviced at all for 60 or 70k till it got lifted.... 16v's are a little more 'sensitive' in terms of needing a regular service n general attending to, ive been told...

I do prefer the look of the earlier ones. I remember seeing a red N reg one abandoned outside my Flat in Glasgow in 2005 just before I sold the place and across the road was a similarly abandoned green L reg Laguna.

Had a glance at it this morning and the bodywork is really pretty decent for the cost of the car. Looked underneath and no signs of incontinence either. I'll need to keep it mobile up and down the street to stop that slightly whistle front brake getting worse. I'm not planning on pressing it into service until October or so, once the roads get salty really.

My Savv (Clio 1.2 16V) suddenly poor starting/ran like shite/engine check light on.

I removed TDC sensor (2 mins - didn't disconnect wires) and wire brushed the sensor tip.. I used a sparkplug brass brush.

£11 ObyWan scanner got the light extinguished... ;)

You can see on the picture why they used to rot the end of the sills. Renault painted a thick layer of shutz over the bungs that let water drain out of the sills. It was quite common at the time for there to be a constant sloshing sound of the rainwater build up in the sills. A poke through the paint and the rubber bung usually brought out a stream of a litre or so brown rusty water running out...

As I've said in other posts they aren't too bad, certainly not as bad as you'd expect. Every car has its faults, some more than others, you could have as much trouble with a Focus or a Golf. You pays your money and takes your choice.
