sierraman
For me, Autoshite is about beating the system, but without driving junk. I define junk as being a 13 year old Mondeo or Vectra (see also: Golf, Focus, Astra) that's rotten, uses oil, no air con, tatty, smells, bits don't work etc. There's no need to drive around in scrap when you can buy something pretty decent for 500 quid or less. Fuck me, there's a Vectra estate with bugger all miles on here, eight years old, £1000. Some folk get off on driving around in shit, but it's not for me. Why would you do it to yourself? To me, £2500 is the upper limit. You can have a really nice plush car for that - 2003 E60 525i or W211 E240 etc. At that figure, you can break the car for spares and get most of your coins back but £5000 for me is a danger area - too dear to scrap, but you're trapped into a car where used bits are $$$$ I look at ten grand plus cars and think of the owner....are you fucking mad? Of course, if I were to win the lottery things would be different, but I haven't. I MOT'd my 318Ti yesterday. It failed on a couple of ARB drop links.............£9 for two new ones, 40 mins to fit, free retest on the £25 MOT and sorted. What would you suggest for £500? JohnDeere
I wanted to 'like' all of the posts here but couldn't be arsed. The great thing is that everyone knows what Autoshite is without having to define it, and that Autoshite is many things to many people. For some it's a necessity to get affordable transport. For some it's a choice, to have a nice car without the monthly direct debit. For some it's a hobby, an escape, a pastime (but not normally at the Crapitcal Plastics level). For some it's just a love of all things cars. And of course it's about slagging off people who buy Nissan Qashcows whilst simultaneously having wet dreams about people buying Talbot Ranchos.... Chris2cv
As i have a 31 year old 2cv, nearly 14year old Clio, 6 year old moped, probably 6 year old phone ( i was given an old one, as the 6 key fell off my previous phone) and many more things on this theme, I am clearly not fussy about having the latest products. I could afford to replace all of them, but all serve me well, so why would I? Autoshite , to me, is this spirit of keeping something that may not be valuable or desirable to others but means something to us. It is somewhere where there is no shame in liking a car like the Rancho or Allegro, where you can enjoy others experiences of ownership of some very unusual cars, even if you can't own them your self. It is somewhere I can be totally honest and not have to conform to what people expect of me - I discussed the loss of my dog last year in ways that I couldn't with people in the real world - men don't have feelings.. I am interested in all cars and I think that there is a place for anything really, if you are not interested in something, don't click it! There is plenty on the site for everyone. Laseraligningfoofooflanges, danthecapriman, Banger Kenny and 6 others

face
Well, I own a 2005 Golf GTi and am on the brink of buying a brand new one of them. So, not really the right chap for in here. But I work away and spend the weekend with my kids. I would dearly love to be restoring a 1984 Charade Turbo, but I have zero time. I like old cars and I think this is the friendliest forum I have ever used. Also it's often hilariously funny too. That's why I like it. Captain Furious
Anyway, for me, autoshite is a forum I stumbled upon completely by accident about a year ago and had a great laugh reading through some of the threads, decided it was a match for my sense of humour and lurked around for a while before finally joining. As for my taste in cars, well, mostly stuff that was around in my childhood. I grew up with my dad owning Triumph 2000's, Talbot Sunbeams, Hillman Imps, Mk3 and Mk5 Cortinas, Mk2 Granadas and so on and I love seeing cars of that era still around today. Its like a hark back to happier times. Well, I'm not sure if happier is the right word, simpler? When you saw everything through childs eyes and your main motoring concern was whether your dads car was faster than your mates' dads' cars. (and it was a simple rule, bigger engine = faster - the end!) Anything from late 70's to early 90's mainly, for me 93 was a bit of a turning point. I'm a Ford nut, unashamedly, and 93 was around the time the Sierra was replaced by the Mondeo, the Mk5 Escort came along, the Mk3 Fiesta...the traditional 3 box shape seemed to disappear and all cars started looking the same. I don't dislike the cars that came after though, and I don't think ANCAS, infact I think the autoshite generation of 30 years time will have some bloody excellent cars to choose from, the jammy shits, and they'll have their own reasons for a 2016 Passat 2.0 TDi being special or holding some meaning for them. I just like to admire people admiring what they like, whether its an ultra pristine concours d'elegance classic, or a beaten up old Austin Montego. If it has 4 wheels and an engine, I'm interested. danthecapriman

But - and it's a big but - that £343 523i will be an absolute peach to drive. Smooth, quiet, nice ride and exuding a level of loveliness lost on most sub 500 quid shitheaps. I used to drive Pinto Sierras and stuff, but in 1995 I bought a 200'000 mile Y reg 525i, the old shark nosed E28. Dark doom blue, cloth, manual box and £380. My first thought upon driving this thing was 'why the fuck have I been driving a Sierra?'. It put me on my current path of old German crap. Old and worthless it may be, but it was really nice when new. The 3 Series stuff is all a bit ordinary though - you need six cyls and preferably a 5 Series for the full effect. A mate bought a rusting T plate bug eyed E240 Benz lat year, auto with leather and working a/c, £280 off Ebay. What a lovely way to travel, and for so little money. That is truly beating the system. I drive 318i's because I'm a tightfisted peasant. To each however, his own. I'm sure folk look down down on my car that is easily the oldest in the street. Couldn't give a shit.
