OMGWBoDENVY!

Does it not hurt having to carry those steel testicles around?

Hold your horses chaps. This may be the quickest turnaround in Autoshite history, but in the last hour, I've discovered something about my new truck.

It's fucked.

I acquired it from captain_tel_senior because I didn't really want to take the rapidly deteriorating Saab on a 300-mile round trip on Wednesday. Sounds like a perfect job for the Range Rover, right?

Except that I've just checked, and the MOT expired four days ago. And the airbag light is on - wouldn't really bother me normally, but it will bother the MOT man. And on early ones like this, that light usually points to a faulty steering wheel "rotary coupler" - which costs £227.

So I will throw myself onto the mercy of my friendly garage tomorrow, and ask them to trace and fix the airbag fault, and MOT it. I am fully expecting them to tell me to fuck off.

After barrelling over to the garage as soon as it opened, getting down on my knees and grovelling - the boys laughed and agreed to squeeze me in. And (with the help of the above-mentioned black tape) I had a fresh ticket by 11:00. I is tickled.

After a MEGA TOW SESH with the Range Rover (which had a duff clutch anyway, and now desperately needs a new one, which is going to cost FIVE HUNDRED FUCKING QUID), the previous objects of my desire are now safely squirreled away in a barn affectionately dubbed "da graveyard":

31323298202_759f3eaf8c_c.jpg

Also I've got a few questions that someone more mechanically savvy than me (read: almost everyone) might be able to help out with. As previously mentioned, the Saab is drinking oil and cuffing out blue smoke, and definitely oil smoke cos it's blue and it stinks. But it only happens at an incredibly specific time: I live at the bottom of a very steep long hill, and there is a nasty corner halfway up. So I can set off smoke-free, and come off the throttle for the corner, but when I get back on it afterwards, the car behind me is enveloped in a haze of smoke.

Now I've spoken to the P.O. and he says he had the intercooler off and found oil in the bottom, so what we reckon is happening is that oil has got in there again and the steep hill is just enough to allow the oil in the intercooler to trickle back into the air intake and get burnt.

So I guess the question I'm asking is, what's the most likely cause of oil in the intercooler? Somebody has mentioned the turbo seals. Is this a DIY job? Are there any other obvious culprits I'm missing? I know these suffer from oil sludge but the P.O. dropped the sump and fitted the latest breather kit.

I know the easy answer is "it cost you fuck all m8, bung oil in it and run it until it blows up" but I've developed a soft spot for this car and plan to spend a bit of dough on it in the future so would like to get it sorted. Is there any love for these on here? I know there are a few Saab lickers, any newer stuff tho? Soz if this is rambling on but I'm a bit of a mechanical idiot so I'm trying to explain it as best I can.

I reckon turbo seals.  My Mrs has one of these and loves it, though the turbo did blow in spectacular fashion after going from no smoke, a bit of smoke, to ALL THE SMOKE in less than 15 minutes.  I understand the 'little' turbo (150BHP, no boost guage) is the least reliable.

not really, a simple remap gives me a reliable 220bhp. I think only top aero/viggen has a bigger turbo

Can you change an eco warrior into an eco worrier, I would be tempted to buy that as insurance for my Saab if its cheap enough.

PM me with details if The Captain doesn't want first dibs.

Could I potentially enquire about a price too, assuming it is compatible with a YS3F with the B207E engine?

I have a Saab, which has started smoking occasionally too. It's only fourteen. Does this lead to bigger problems in the future, like a habit for cocaine or will counselling help if I catch it early?

Does anyone know where I can get the proper pre-2001 font number plates for my Range Rover? Like these:

Range-Rover-P38A-1994-Front.jpg

Mine's got awful post-2001 narrow font plates on, which make me feel a little bit sick every time I look at them. I'm on a mission to de-mong it - I've already repainted the front grille black (after a P.O. colour-coded it - poorly) and am currently trying to find a set of original orange front indicators and rear lenses at a reasonable price, to replace the nasty smoked facelift ones. Any help on any of these fronts would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone fancy this before I stick it on eBay?

2001 Saab 9-3 SE Turbo Convertible.

93,000 miles. Shortish MOT till 06/05/2017.

£350 (or £6 roffle..?)

Located in mid Cornwall PL24.

I bought this at the start of last summer and smoked around in it and then stashed it away over the winter. On the first vaguely sunny day we had about two weeks ago I dug it out, got it back on the road.. and decided I prefer my P38.

Good points first -

It's a real sharp looker in blue, and it goes like fuggin shit off a shovel!

Leather interior is in good nick barring a tiny fag burn in passenger doorcard - see pic.

Fully working cruise control (this is my first car with cruise, and it's the BEST THING EVER!)

The roof is in full working order, in a lovely shade of blue to match the car (never seen another one?), goes up and down with no problems, and is fully waterproof.

Sump drop was done a year ago by the previous owner and the oil and filter was changed 300 miles ago with proper GM-spec stuff.

It has little niggles that I just haven't got the mojo to sort out -

It has been known to puff out blue smoke occasionally - however since the oil change this seems to have diminished.

EML light comes and goes - stuck it on the diagnostics and it came up with a code for a misfire, but doesn't affect running in any way.

Runs hot - fan is eager to cut in. Temp gauge never budges though. Used a small amount of water on a 300-mile round trip the other day.

Crack in top of driver's windscreen (passed MOT last year).

Front tyres are wearing on the inside edge so will need a pair for MOT.

Basically I'm just punting this out there as a semi-project - I have been driving it daily and it's been fine. Someone with a little time and more knowhow than me would have it running sweet - I have simply lost interest due to being sucked into a downward spiral of increasingly ropier P38 Range Rovers (ie I am in my element).

Have loadsa photos:

Really?

I've never got anything 16 years old on a classic policy other than a Raver 75 because there's an ownership club that's actively involved with one of the insurers.
