A big hello to all, I've been lurking here for a fair while now, but haven't really had anything to contribute.. until father (henceforth known as captain_tel) came home last week with THIS:

IT'S A V8 M8! And what's more, it seems to be a pretty posh one. All electrick everything (and all working!) and sunroofs galore. I think a 3dr manual V8 is a bit of a rarity too.

 

I think it checks all the boxes for this place, it's:

  • OLD. Ish.
  • BRITISH. Check.
  • RUSTY. Yessir.

And as a bonus it has horrendous fuel consumption. But I bloody love it and the noise makes me tingle in all the right places. Hope you like it!

That looks great, my first Disco was a V8 3 door and was the best LR I've ever owned. It did 20 mpg with Mrs N day to day or 25mpg when towing! I suppose I drove smoother and slower with an overloaded caravan and 4 screaming kids in the back.
Petrol's often have less rust because they're less likely to have spent their lives coated in mud and shit.

Excellent shed, I had a H plate 200tdi years ago & it spent it's life covered in mud.

Lovely! These pre facelift jobbies, Freight rover front lights et al are a rare sight these days. Love the colour and spec. When did they stop offering the 3 dr?

Oooh, I' like early Discos (I've had 4 :D ) and this has the correct number of doors.

 

If it is a keeper and you're doing lots of miles these early v8's are reasonably* cheap to LPG.

Right till the end - 98/99. One of the mags has one on a W plate.

12 to 20mpg was the norm,depending on how quickly you decided to run up and down the Welsh hillside

I think that's near enough what I'm getting out of this one, I imagine my local Cornish hillsides to be similar to your Welsh ones.

 

3.5 or 3.9 V8?

3.5 injection. The 3.9s came with the facelift in (I think) '94.

 

The Conran interior is proper wicked too, the only way to describe it is "airy".

Indeed I did, and my better half loves it so much that I'm in deep doo-doo for contemplating parting with it (see Espace thread for details). I like it a lot too, in all fairness.

And it has NO RUST in the boot floor. Chew on that, you doubting Thomases :-)

This weekend it got washed, polished, had a few plastics painted black and generally got tarted up.

That gammy headlight is a replacement I stole off our parts truck without looking too closely, and only after fitting did we realise that the new one is in fact worse. Arsehats.

The eagle-eyed of you might notice the new rimz - here's a closer look:

The even more eagle-eyed of you might notice the missing wheelnut in above picture.

 

Long story short, we changed 3 of the wheels, only to find out the last one had been mega tightened by some berk with an air socket (is that what they're called? Air gun? You know what I mean). Anyway, they'd also reamed up the locking wheelnut, so all of our efforts with a breaker bar came to naught, and came to even more naught after this happened:

There should in fact be four pins in there. Fuck it.

 

So a trip was paid to my friendly local garage across the road from work, who I assumed would have some magical tools to solve my problem. They didn't, so they did this instead:

Which was fine by me, as I could finally change the last wheel!

 

And after all that fucking about.. I'm pretty undecided about the new wheels anyway. But Tel likes em, and it was enough grief to get the fucking things on, so they can stay put for a bit.

 

In happier news, it was sunny today, and I had the afternoon off so i bunged 20 quid in it, opened the sunroofs and drove nowhere in particular, grinning like a madman the whole time. So there you go.

Good progress

You can get pre-facelift 200 shape 3.9s, usually with an auto or LT77. There is one going back to nature in my friend's yard on an L reg.

There are only about 6 variations on the disco locking nut key. It will be stamped with a letter on the end where the wheel brace goes - this is the identifier and replacements are readily available from landy places without having to jump through hoops.

91 was the quoted top end for my 200tdi. That's exactly what it did too.

A wee update on this. Being 23, and being on a wage fairly typical of a 23-year-old, has massively failed to gel with the idea of running a V8 daily. So I have made a smart* decision and bought something more economical and practical Swedish.

For 500 notes I can't fault it! And fear not, the Disco remains in the family, as captain_tel is using it as a second car. But has insured it on a classic policy, which won't cover me. Booooo.

I've had a wild* summer hooning around in the Saab with the roof down but it has rewarded me by beginning to smoke ominously and consume oil the same way I consume fags. So obviously the sensible thing to do is put it in a shed and worry about it in the spring/maybe never.
