Crummy Clio - 1.4 auto - £220

As alluded to in the ebay tat thread, I collectioned this today. No pez shot as it came with half a tank, and as I often do with new shite I hammered it home rather than be a fanny and take it easy. I tell you what, it's bloody brilliant! I was doing 80odd on the M23/M25 no bother, and it zips around town great.

It's an RN with the 1.4 Energy engine and 4 speed auto, and being an early one (first registered August 1991) it has the earlier seats and is carb fed I think. I thought the 4 speeder may be a bit shit and hunt around loads, but far from it, gear changes are smooth and it has both a 'Comfort' and 'Sports' mode. The seller had it set to sports making it more responsive, so the other setting may turn out to be ponderous shite when I try it out.

Several giffer owners mean knocks and scrapes all over, but the lad selling it has been using it daily since last July for a 40 mile round commute, and he's spent a few bob on it since then so it runs spot on.

Grim and grey! The seats are deceptively comfortable though as they're made of French softness.

Interior is tidy enough, but some Vulgalouring is required

It's on 14 inch wheels but came with the original 13s. The bloke said it drove better on 14s or something, so if anyone wants the 13s they're free to collect from BR3, near Crystal Palace. Just getting in the way otherwise! Tyres could be useful as spares as although there's 3-4mm of tread each they look old.

Forgot this pic. Got to love giffer repairs!

Nice early one - I remember being an honoured guest at Gidea Park motors in Romford for the launch of these (and the 19 as well) and was well surprised in what a huge leap forward these were compared with the 5.

I always wanted one when I was younger but Sis had three and let me use them occasionally so wasn't all bad. Her earlier grey RT model was best, the later ones came with improved kit and declining quality. Renault quality around this time was pretty good, shame they forgot how to build cars in later years

You could probably get some genuine trims cheap off the bay got the authentic one careful owner look.

yes, expensive - but would do the trick!

That looks nice, I was toying with getting one of these or an R5 auto for little sister, so I'll be interested to see how you get on with it.

I think these have a tendency to suffer from K-series syndrome. I tried to buy one last year but all five I looked at had signs of HGF, be it in 1.4 base or 1.8 Baccara flavour. Bills show this suffered in 2003, fixed to the tune of 600 quid!

I'll try and keep this one for a while as it'll be useful economy motoring hopefully.

Put my Daughter in one of these when she passed her test, purchased from old couple up the road advertising it in the Post Office window, was a well made, tough old thing, until the cambelt let go, and she managed to proceed only on the back of a transporter to the bridge.

Then we gave her a Daewoo Leganza two litre auto with leather and the full mashings, which she hated with a passion - but that's young girlies for you, no idea of class :-P

Edit  - forgot to mention was rather shit on fuel for a little car, there are much better but it did feel like a solid car, so swings and roundabouts and all that.

I was gonna say the wheels look a bit big for it somehow. Is it still on Megane-sized tyres too? If so, I'd check the tyres don't interfere with anything, or have your speedo under-reading and getting you into bother (before you let the 13's go).

I think one of these was the first auto I drove on public roads. My driving instructor had an early 1.2 manual, and on my 17th b'day, that was the first car I ever legally drove. That's a long time ago now, who'd have thunk the Clio is 26 years old?

Thats ace - I had a grey one on an N plate - brand new as a company car back in the day - a 1.2 prima  and it remains one of my favourite cars for a number of reasons - I abused the hell out of it and never missed a beat - really fancy one again one day!

Good point Joe, I did wonder about the speedo readings being on 14s. The higher spec ones did have 14s but I need to check the exact ratios and whatnot. I went through a few cameras dead on 30 earlier and they didn't flash, but I might still try the 13s just to see how different it feels.

Went out for dinner this evening to a country pub, was four up and it still barrelled along fine. Although trying to hold a conversation with my partially deaf parents in the back was tricky, engine and wind noise got in the way a bit!

Top bombing!!!

This one must be mega early, can't think when I last saw one, never mind on a 'J. Where does this one sit in the renner trim/ spec hierarchy?

I thought the RN was povvo, but looking in the handbook it goes RL - RN - RT. Not got quite the same ring as the the old TL, GTL, and GTX trim specs!
