Moogs Motahs - sinking the seat

The Moog

Recommended Posts

Lambda sensor would shift with heat, penetrating oil and a flare spanner + hammer combo

Hopefully taking the exhaust off will mean it won't be too difficult to access.

Although sensors aren't mega bucks if it doesnt come out.

Nice weather this morning so cracked on with exhaust swap

Bonnet up - let the dog see the rabbit

Off with airbox and gubbins

Exhaust bolts were bit awkward and stiff - still didn't take long to pop it offe5675e28a87ea979bcbd9723d52733e9.jpg

The broken half on the bench

It was a bit futile to try and get the oxygen sensor out. So instead £18 hobbies ordered online.

The exhaust gasket is showing where it had a little blow and the gasket had also split.

Now time to use my new jack (£30 from Halfords)

Up in the air to attack the Cat bolts

One came off easily but the other just rounded. 4b5a07e720e52ec62b053cb6d39b13bc.jpg

Instead I decided to remove the cat istelf to see if could be sorted on bench

Rear bolts came undone mostly but wouldnt do that last bit.

Whilst safety dog looked on

I whipped out the wheel of death and cut the offending bolt off. 69e410f45a176920d9d28c943ba0647b.jpg6c100637746232ec074f72f88e8f69b9.jpg5eca93ac1a8c3977fa680658a6199f77.jpg

Obviously what the cat needed was a decat. £40 later and a stainless version is winging it's way to me. Also ordered some new exhaust rubbers as they are in a bit of a state.

Old versus new

Time to put things back together. I pre-ordered studs and bolts for manifold as I thought some may get stuck. Some did.

Didn't take long to get headers on and done up tight

817b515c361bdb651ec3f7614f2366df.jpg

Jobs left is to fit decat pipe when it arrives along with lambda sensor in front.

The cat itself has a lambda sensor. I am assuming that it isn't needed if a decat is fitted?

that's good progress - the lead coming off the cat isn't a lambda, it is just a heat sensor, you can safely disconnect it and tuck the cable out of harms way - if the 'heat' light shows on the dash, you can remove the bulb (I can't remember if I repurposed it when I had a hardtop with heated rear screen)

of course, with a shiney manifold and a shiney decat, the rear section is going to look a bit scruffy now :)

^This.

As a multiple MX5 owner in a previous life (Before kids!) that's what I always did without any issues :)

RE cats, you have to have a cat on a post 92 uk car and post 95 import, otherwise fine.

And lo an electronical magick message did quest young Moog to far off land of Ar'gos.

There he did battle dragonz and bears to achieve the holy grail. He returned victorious clutching his prize to his fair maiden.

She uttered the immortal words

"Thou been buying stuff off eBay doth the horseless carriage of joy - why doth not thou buy a car that requires not new pieces from land of Ar'gos and the kingdom of eBay?"

With such a challenge the young knight speaketh truth about "cheaper in long run, doth hist hobby" and some magickal words about grimmits, sensors and tracking, which sated the fair maiden. Or at least bored her into not caring.

Behold ... Shiny ....

The tale will continue once the young knight doesth procure bolts of fitting and nuts of tightening from the county of B Q shire.

Shiny thing attached today. M10 X 40mm bolts procured from B & Q shire.

Some car pervert wanted me to rev it with no exhaust.

The phone didn't quite do it justice.

First off let's check they are the same size, last thing want to find is that it is different.

Prepare to go on

But fiddling getting gasket and bolts on. The decat pipe is angled and different sizes front to back.

Fitted but on test drive noticed it is scraping on speed bumps.
458005a30cc87a4709cea4e91c938c36.jpg

I bought a decat with a silencer as part of it. I think I need just a straight pipe. Will change that later on in the year.

Fannymould colour change

Wee bit crispy underneath. Hatching a plan with NJGleeds to get the car up in the air later on in the year to start dealing with rusty bits.
0aff9ff506d2274a993b156d1f4107a3.jpg

And for the car rev pervert here it is with decat fitted

So the difference in noise compared to cat fitted is not a lot.

Speed wise I can't notice anything different but mainly because I have been driving the slowest car in the world so even the Getz feels supercar fast.

Just needs a clean now ready for autotest next week.

Have you got the power steering fluid cooler on yet ? You might see a bit of boiling over on the autotest next week, maybe wrap a couple of rags around the reservoir to catch the excess so it doesn't get everywhere. Have fun anyway - I love autotest and should really make the effort to do more.

Nope not yet.

Was planning on giving it a bit of sand on cripsy bits and paint then get it on this weekend.

GM kindly gave me a Pas cooler for the little red car. On the track day it pissed power steering fluid out under the bonnet.

With Autotest next weekend, I though it might be a good time to fettle it.

It was a little bit crispy in places.

Sandpaper and a wire brush were used to take off the rust

Then the Krust dug out and slathered on

Masked it up and then I let that go off then cracked out the spray. It's a zinc spray from Lidl Igot a while back.

Masking off and out back together. Looks alright. 216c918469e8a0280899afa7d43b3b43.jpg0a7b92d877fb4e7c6b4fc61170023596.jpg

Needs 24 hours to harden.

Just need to work out how to fit it.

looks good as new - nice work :)

there are captive nuts in the chassis rails which should correspond roughly to the mounting brackets, I think I just looped the ends with a bit of fuel hose and clamps when I removed the old leaky one - hopefully will be fairly obvious where it goes.

Is it in front of radiator or behind it?

So some steps forward but many back.

Took opportunity to try and fit Pas cooler today. I couldnt see how it is going to mount so thought it would be easier to remove the rad.

This is becoming a common sight.

One of jubilee clips was fun* to get at 1a3904ed7826b4f9ddc2b7b81f752663.jpg

Once off the car I noticed that one of the hoses had been leaking and they are all past best.

New hoses ordered - will need to get some new clamps as well.

Flushed rad whilst it was off 3cd44caec0be024d85045201947dcc55.jpg

It's not in bad shape

Cleaned up metal pipe and sprayed as last time.

With it all out I still can't work out how the cooler mounts. There are some captive nuts either side but don't seem to close to how it should fit.

Laid out

Captive nuts

Having a Google there is a dearth of pics online to show how it fits.

What am I missing?
