Moogs Motahs - sinking the seat

The Moog

Recommended Posts

So call off little brother telling me that my (no you bought it off me) car has broken down.

Sounds like HGF with all coolant gone, white smoke out back and oil doing disappearing act.

Not quite sure what he expects me to do from 200 miles away.

Anyway any one fancy a cheap puma? He is talking of scrapping it.

Oil disappearing isn't good, but the coolant jumping ship it could be the notorious HCV or the stupid bloody plastic 'stat housing, neither of which should kill it, unless ignored for ages and not topped up .

After the snokoas yesterday I have booked pug in for new tyres.

The old tyres need taking off and fired into space. Yesterday in the light smattering of snow they had less grip on the road than Mariah Carey does on reality.

Coming down a slight incline resulted in the car sliding uncontrollably towards a line of stationary traffic. Cadence braking and use of abs was pointless as there was zero grip. Even handbrake did bugger all.

Managed to halt the slide by steering into the kerb to stop. At this point I almost decided to abandon the car and go get the mx5.

Got to work being really careful with leaving loads of space and driving very slowly

Now that the snow has disappeared got a couple of other jobs done. The air filter housing screws are rusted in so will need to drill them out and find alternative way to secure it.

In meantime have lobbed this on .... How many horses extra do you reckon?

Also tweaked the fuel set up. The clear pipe wasn't needed so replaced for proper hose with spring clips, resulting in zero air bubbles. New Audi filter is on its way to be put instead of the disposable one

Still on list are new glow plugs as still a bit of white smoke at start up

Do these suffer with the same silly low air intake pipe that 306s have? That filter makes even more sense if so.

Yeah they do, feed is from bottom of the car.

Makes the car a lot quicker but mainly cause the airfilter looks like it hasn't been changed since the ark.

For the airbox, If you have a Dremel it might be possible to cut a slit into each bolt so you can undo with a screw driver, did that with my old caddy.

I think I will have to drill them out. Tried screw extractors on the. Which didn't work and mullered the tops.

Easier to have a go now it is off the car.

A lack of feminine presence at Moog towers meant I could have car time today.

On list was to fit the reversing sensors I found yesterday.

Ignoring the slight drizzle I set about emptying back of car

Previously I have taken the bumpers off cars but these bolts looked mega rusty so decided to do it all in situ.

First challenge is this

9b63481424caf7384a48548b93f4830f.jpg

The reversing lights are in the tail gate. Normally it is pretty easy to install when you can tap the rear light clusters.

Undaunted I started stripping... after the neighbours complain I put my pants back on and dismantled the car.

Check light colour

It's a beigey pink one. Side pod off

Someone has been here before. It's all the electrical connections for the tow bar.

Other side

Reveals the goodies. Quick continuity check and found the feed for the lights

I was hoping I could use my waymo connectors for this job as would make it quick and easy.

Sadly the wires are too small so time to break out soldering iron. 703b0c7b792c0e2bb5c1d1eeff7378c2.jpg

Little fiddly

But didn't take long for it all back in place. 5911b5e796f4437d870902715ffebf5b.jpg

Then ran the sensors in the boot. This was a bit of a fucker of a job as the tow bar limited access to the rear of the bumper.

After an hour of fiddling and swearing they are all in and connected. Trim back

Doesn't look too bad. Need to seat them a little betterd029bbf136c23f6b71559d37309894f3.jpg

only down side is having tailgate open for about 3 hours has flattened battery - so now on charge.

No drizzle today and no missus Moog so on with next job. The handbrake sucks donkey Wang.

Jacked up, Wheels off and let's have a butchers. Sand was everywhere underneath.

The rear discs look horrific. Pads are ok but the calipers look like crustier than the levellers and the backing plates have vanished. All jobs for another day

You flick a little wheel to tighten up the handbrake mech. After a spending ages doing it one way with no benefits I did it the other way - bingo.

Stops like a good un - added 15 bhp as well

Heady with success I set about fixing another issue on track car. At last tech inspection eyes were raised about battery stopping sliding mechanism

Had a look online and the j bolts for a Mazda were about £8. Sod that. Had a rummage and found this7d9feafd125ecbd03730ed135e38b090.jpg

Far too long. Quick angle grinder to reduce the length left me with a straight bar.

Tickled it with heat

01628b12316ea6c775e6ef7bc74ced5b.jpg

Before putting it between two bricks and giving it a tappety tap tap with hammer and chisel.

The threaded end was a bit tool omg for the car so tickled it with the grinder. Note I used the trick of putting a nut on first then winding it off after cutting down. Means the threads will still work.

Any idea what kind of bulbs I am looking for to fit in here? 9e6459ddec832689f17bf40eab2f72e0.jpg

It might show up as trip computer setting. If so rotate side disk back to 3 I think It was on. Unless you plan to get secondary multiply from a scrap executive and wire in the features?

Just fancy the miles left in tank function.

Having bypassed the fuel filter I did wonder if that effects it. Also the button on the end of the wiper stalk doesn't seem to change it.

Today I changed oil, I know Bub had done oil but not filter. With 4.5l of oil just £11 in home bargains and the filter already included by bub, seemed silly not to do it.

Pelas are awesome.

Lidl filter remover worked on the filter. It had been done up by Geoff Capes.

New snow tyres fitted came into own tonight.

Up next is new shocks all round, potentially new battery, buy and fit rear wiper and potentially a leather interior.

Would love to retro fit cruise.

I am definitely loving the car. Does everything asked of it. Decent mpgs and doesn't feel like a white good like the xantia did.

Also I have seen mention of tuning the 2.1td any idea of how?
