And I'm now trying to figure out a way to get to the Enid Blyton track day - I've already got hols booked for the end of september to go and do stupid running stuff but may have to cancel and get some stupid car stuff done instead.

 

Glad you enjoyed a wee shot of the mazda, wait 'til you see what it can do on track :)

Was hoping to get the Rover in for a MOT today but it needs quite a lot doing to it before then. So MOT is on hold for a week.

 

eBay was employed to the full and ordered battery (£35 delivered)

water coolant sensor (£3)

Thermostat (£6)

Air filter (£5)

Bosch sparkplugs (£7 for 4)

Fuel filter (£5)

Oil filter (£3)

Rotor arm (£3)

 

On to buy list are a distributor cap and HT leads at some point.

 

Njgleeds has kindly given me a set of new(old) tyres that are newer than the Yugoslavian Tigars that are on the beast.

 

I need to also do an oil change and coolant flush plus find the exhaust leak before the mot.

 

406 news - aside from the ignition issues it performed faultlessly over 700 miles at the weekend.

 

Then the central locking has decided to lock and then unlock. I tried adjusting the striker plates on the doors to ensure that they were closing properly. Seems to have fixed it for now

 

To celebrate I fitted the stereo that AS secret Santa gave me. For the princely sum of £8 I ordered a fascia plate, iso leads, antenna connector and radio removal keys.

It challenge is that the two lives I think are the wrong way round so it loses memory and has a permanent live. Will fix that tomorrow.

 

Got loads of old stereos now knocking about so will stick them on shitecycle tomorrow as they are cluttering up the garage.

 

Getz has got a new MOT now that a front subframe has been fitted. The rear arches need vactcan treatment as they are getting a bit scabby

 

The Mx5 - just works.

 

Saab 900 - awaiting collection and fettling. Will move the Rover on once it is tested and then can bring this over.

 

Other news - now have a sparkly stick machine. I need to get some metal and start having a practice

Peugeot got PAS change as the steering was getting quite heavy. Fluid colour of coffee

Air flow in the car has been a bit shit. Better check cabin filter.

Nah. Probably got the plague. Luzzed it into Blackburn as they have the plague already. New one ordered.

£35 delivered next day from ebay. What a world we live in.

 

And this I am hoping has a better 4th gear than the one in the current box. Probably half the weight of the mx5

All the Rover bits have arrived at Argos from eBay so will crack on with that tomorrow.

 

 

And more importantly I did a buyage. Cost less than £300! All revealed tomorrow.

Had a rotor to swap over

It looks like the end of the camshaft may have snapped - I took expert advice and will wait for car to cool down then take off camcover to have a look.

 

It might be the reason for the petrol smell for the green beastie.

 

Luckily there are brand new camshafts on eBay for £40!

Bright and early I got on with the important things in life - removing the cam cover for the 820

First challenge is the back plate for the dizzy cap. One bolt is stuck fast

Steps were taken. I removed the cambelt cover and ensured that timing marks were clear. Then just cut the belt as it is going to be replaced anyway.

It looks like it is held in with rubber which has just disintegrates over time.

Got loads of rusty water out. Overall it is in pretty good nick. Just a little crispy at the bottom where it mounts

Wire brushed and then Krusted

Left in sun to dry. Then will paint it black

 

Connector was a little furry so cleaned with fibreglass pencil

One thing I will say is that it is a very easy car to work on. All the bolts bar two came out easy enough.

 

Current job list is

 

Drill out the bolt on dizzy backing plate

Clean up all mating surfaces then

Buy and fit replacement exhaust cam shaft, new oil seals,

Buy and fit cambelt kit and water pump,

paint the rad and refit

Find the exhaust blow

Change tyres for new (old ones)

Great progress. Good to see you've had a good experience of a battery delivered from an on-line order.

 

I'm a regular user of on-line for car parts but have never managed to brave a battery order.

 

Fear of 'Damaged Held Lost' , 'Parcel Farce' or 'Damaged Parlcels Deluvered' tipping the fekker upside down so that when you open the package, battery acid pisses out over everything in sight has prevented me from ordering.

I think that most of the gloop is the stuff I chucked in to get the car home. Not so concerned about that - more concerned the amount of rust in the water - that rust is effectively bits of engine that have corroded.

 

 

Never had an issue with batteries delivered. They are normally packaged week, wrapped and sealed in a strong plastic bag. The breathing plugs are sealed - to stop anything leaking out.

I've had half a dozen batteries from Tayna in the last 5 years, never had so much as a dent in the outer packaging and the batteries are cocooned in expanded polystyrene; whoever their courier is they know what they're doing.

Top work! It looks fairly easy to work on and very satisfying, or will be when it fires up and runs sweet after all your work!

 

I like how methodical you are. I start off trying to be methodical then kick over the box I put all the bolts in, pick up more than I started with and wonder what the hell has gone wrong.

Having a few beers then deciding to fix your car doesn't always go swimmingly.

 

So yesterday we left the dizzy spacer with one stuck screw

In the iron lady's words - that screw wasn't for turning. After discussion with my learned friend the plan was to drill it out using a drill bit exactly the right size. Drill bit applied and most of it came way.

 

Feeling emboldened I gave the spacer a gentle tug and

Luckily it all unscrewed meaning the camshaft part is ok. Also luckily Rimmers sell the spacer for not megabucks.
