saab breakers near me,will have look in thurs,..

 

That would be great - I need an electric drivers side quadrant/mechanism - 2 or 3 door classic 900.  Most of them go in the same place hence people selling rebuilt ones on ebay for £150.

Send it to me and I will have a go.

Then when I fuck it up you can order one :)

 

Or I could put brave pants on and have a go myself. I just need to google welding supplies and go and get a liner tomorrow. Might tap you up for electric pritstick settings and help. 

 

for the stripped teeth , pop rivet /weld a fresh piece of metal onto the side of the worn quadrant  ? .... and file to shape and put new teeth on it using a file

 

 

 would the piece of quadrant on the "wrong" bit transfer over and fix the knackered bit ....

 

Its quite a bit of metal as the window is a chunky mother.  My next door neighbour (ex welder) said it is tempered steel to deal with the forces.

As mentioned on grumpy man thread for the second time in two weeks I absent mindlessly put petrol into the 406.

 

First time wasn't a lot but yesterday got 20l off before realising. Fill it up with 50l diesel hoping to get away with it. AS hive mind pointed out that it won't be a happy bunny about it so have lobbed some two stroke oil in to help.

 

Recently the 406 has started becoming more french with the electrics and with the clutch slipping I think it is a matter of time before it expires. Plan is to run until the MOT is up in Feb then probably replace it - maybe with another one.

 

Saab news - window regulator that went missing in the post has been delivered to a random shop. Hoping I can get it tomorrow so that will be a great win.

 

I cleaned and used rubber grease on the sunroof seals, which means it hasn't leaked in the recent rain. That's a definite win.

 

With the other repair regulator arriving Monday, it will be the main jobs done on it.

 

Mx5 - has started rattling from underneath. Hoping it is an exhaust issue as that should be easy to sort. Mot is our end of Jan so making some plans for it to try and fix it up. I have been driving it top down for the last few days and it is just brilliant.

The heatshield around the CAT (If it has one) is the main MX5/Eunos rattle culprit IME, if not then check out the other heatshield that sits over the exhaust manifold. If it's the latter don't plan on getting the bolts out in one piece, go in armed with a drill.

No cat :-)

 

Exhaust manifold cover is gone as has got 421 fitted.

 

Will try it up on ramps tomorrow to have a look.

That's the way :)

 

I always used to buy the slightly longer exhaust hangers from Ebay to distance the whole thing from the chassis by an extra 1" or so, that always helped. Either way, fingers crossed it's an easy fix. TBH there's not much that can go wrong with Mk1's! I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it without to much head scratching.

So one closing window.

 

The second had got lost in the post, but the seller on eBay couldn't have been more helpful. Tracked it down to a bargain booze 5 miles away. Luckily they still had it behind the counter.

 

Once collected it was back to make the other side weather proof.

 

Thing I love about this car is that you only need these tools to totally dismantle the door.

By using screws there aren't clips that break or ping off into the distance.

The new (old) part was missing the rear cover on the motor, so I just swapped the old motor onto new (old) regulator.

All done. So now have a watertight car that doesn't drop the boot on your head.

The mx5 developed an annoying metallic rattle.

 

So up on my new donated ramps from my neighbour. He built them 50 years ago

They just about fit and can deal with lowered car.

 

Exhaust investigation time and found it almost straight away. The lambda sensor was loose so rattling on overrun.

 

Tightened up and job done. I also removed the cowl mod air filter and put back in the washer bottle. I think being able to clean the screen is more important than sounding beefy. The piss bag option I couldn't really get to work.

The roffle Jag is now staying in the fold, with the 406 either being as or fragged.

 

It would probably do another MOT ok but the clutch starting to slip and some little electrical issues plus trim falling apart mean that unless someone wants a cheap diesel estate for 3 months it all probably be come bean tins.

 

Missus Moog quite likes the Jag and I think it will be here for winter.

 

Things that would be good to sort are central locking and getting tracking checked as it wanders a little bit.

 

I am assuming the R badge on the boot is nonsense (I haven't even opened the bonnet yet)

So sun came up this morning and the firmly chosen path last night had become a bit more wobbly.

 

I popped out to take photos of the pug and decided to take it for a spin. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it, it is a pretty sorted car as money has been spent in the past.

 

Yes it needs some things fixing and yes the clutch is a wee bit slippy under boost, but it does 50mpg, is easy to work on and the dogs like it. I would say that the ride is a bit better than the Jag as it seems to soak up potholes well enough.

 

The Jag makes much more a statement and is a very handsome car. It feels a step up in quality and feels a newer car all round. Stereo is ace with decent speakers and cruise is a real boon.

 

Downsides are that it feels a big heavy car, the ride isn't the best with potholed roads and obviously the fuel consumption.

 

On both cars central locking and AC have ceased to perform their required functions.

 

So as of this evening the Pug has kept its permanent place on the fleet.

The ignition switch on the pug has been intermittent. This is normally the electrical switch playing silly buggers.

 

New one ordered from eBay for £10.

This is really fiddly requiring a small screw to be undone then another tab to be pushed it whilst wiggling the barrell out.

After many swear words it popped out.

Houston we have an issue. One of the cables is far too small. Not just a tiny bit but about 8 CMS or so.

 

Rummage of the garage for crimps only turned up Waygo connectors. I am assuming no kittens of nuns will die if I used them

 

So clipped and attached

The barrell fell apart at this point so spent 10 minutes working out how it went back together and then another 10 getting the clip back in

I had to take the connectors off to refit the barrell then reattached them

It starts first time everytime now. Very satisfying.

 

 

I have left the lower cowl off just in case the waygo connectors arent suitable.

 

Can anyone confirm they will / won't be ok?

As the pug is now staying on the fleet a few things have happened.

 

Number one - the clutch slip has disappeared due to reverting to a slightly lower powered car.

 

Number two - new stereo fitted. I chucked in a mechless a few months ago. It was my AS secret Santa pressie and was great. Then the Bluetooth stopped working and also the display couldn't be dimmed. You can change the colour so it doesn't ruin your night vision plus a phone holder on the front which works really well

Number three - I always struggle with the length of the car (probably because I swap between loads of them) so a set of reversing sensors have been fitted.

 

I have covered it before and it pretty straightforward. Find reversing power, tap into it, find somewhere to hide the ecu and beeper, drill out the bumper sensors and cut a hole in the floor to run the wires. Put it all back together and done.

 

On this 406 I have put them at the bottom of the bumper as had really easy access. The wires are run with extra gaffer tape where it runs into the boot.
