Moogs Motahs - sinking the seat

The Moog

Recommended Posts

Biggest issue with the new car was the brakes. Or more importantly the lack of them. The pedal pretty much went to the floor indicating air in the system.

Annoyingly the brake filler cap isn't a screw but a notched on so my pressure bleeder didn't fit.

Safety dog in attendance.

Trims off and put in boot.

I think the tyres may be a little old and may need replacing

Discs don't look too bad

Oddly an abs sensor car just clips to strut even though not on the car.

Bleed nipples were plus gassed, tapped with hammer, loosened using the drill bit method but we're so crispy they were starting to round. 7b5c8fb661d87fc44016ae3f0433522f.jpg

Brakes were bled with a one man kit which worked quite well.

Couple of the nipples were blocked so took them off and used a rivet to clean them out

Seems like a fair amount of surface rust but nothing too bad underneath

It all went reasonably well apart from last caliper. That bleed nipple just rounded will fix that another day 832e44ff5b3d8a7580c961257ba65127.jpg85b3da1ff1bf32c876c7ef59dd5521d3.jpg

All back together and the brake pedal is nice and solid.

Ideally all the calipers will be taken off and refurbished as are a little crispy. The underneath could do with a wire brush and then anti rust stuff adding

In other good news the battery now seems to be holding a charge after being stuff on charger overnight.

On to the naughty child of the fleet. The 406 is slow. Very slow.

869f9aa41afc93cf18dd3779d91dbe00.jpg

It feels as if the turbot isn't turbotting. Njgleeds suggested plugging it in to OBD2 and looking at live data.

Torque loaded and installed the turbo pressure gauge

df6eb31c617d46484949cbde5f3205fd.jpg

Hmmm. Even driving the car this doesn't change. Bit of Google and the vacuum is just the air filter causing that.

Suggested that the turbo isn't working.

Luckily* the engine is canted backwards and the turbo strapped to the back. Lovely. Ian Peugeot who decided this is a good idea needs kicking repeatedly in the balls and sent to the naughty step.

Car up in air and look at taking off the wheel liner.

9fe22574cd2f83569d4ab66a63e4e1b2.jpg

All of the fasteners look like this. Crispy and rounding off. Didn't have any death wheels left in stock and the left handed screw drill bits didn't touch them.

Ended up taking off the undertray and peering up. Filthy with oil even though couldn't see a leak.

370c07c7590e33b2bf8f473642e1f652.jpg33c127b840201c487be53104d9c25dec.jpg64f0045f210d1f8fd7ea2854b36b01d2.jpg3decf65337e635e0f58e81f7e1d60183.jpgf8bd89b2ca4da0fdb463d0bca1aa5b0a.jpg

With a bit of lateral thinking I wedged the throttle open and started the car, then touched the turbo with a screwdriver as a stethoscope to see if it was spinning. Indeed it was and with no obvious boost leaks (not that I could see much) I ran out of skills and ideas.

Put it all back together - will find a way to look at it in more detail another day.

Photos of the teacosies, erm I mean headrest covers please :-)

Will be tomorrow but your wish is my command.

Current plans with Rover are to MOT it and then decide from there.

Many people are saying to use it as a daily but I am a bit fearful that I will ruin it.

It needs new shocks, probably new calipers , new tyres and a new radiator.

Which one are you bringing north tomorrow then ? You'll need plenty of boot space, anyway :)

Pug tomorro as a) has mot, insurance and tax b ) the flange mobile will need washing first c) not sure teacosies are accepted in north land.

So much win for one thread. What’s the drill bit method for removing bleed nipples?

Re no boost swap the egr solenoid with the turbo one and see if there’s any boost. If not get hold of a vacuum guage and check you haven’t got a vacuum leak in the control system. I’m having bother with my HDi right now and my turbo is only kicking in around 2000rpm which is a sign of a small vacuum leak. The vacuum pump is driven by the engine and in my case can only overcome the leaks by the time it’s spinning at 2000rpm. If you have a massive leak you’ll have no control on the turbo solenoid = no boost.

Drill bit technique

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gn-CvqvXguU

I have got a boost gauge but being hdi 90 can't find an easy place to T it off.

Not sure it has a boost solenoid as I think it is wastegate only. Will have a look tomorrow.

Remap is in the post which I am hoping with improve things.

Ungrateful french bastard

Trying to start it this morning just got

Jiggling the keys got it to start but then had this

ea08cbe28f5ab665a267563eded4b1fe.jpg

Now it seems to decide whether it wants to start or not by some random chance. I am assuming it is either ignition switch being a pain or immobilizer.

Im no Frenchman, but that looks like the fabled old Peugeot intermittent immobiliser fault?

Best resolved by nobody knows.

I remember seeing it on an (at the time) roughly 6 year old Xsara Picasso HDi.

Both my 306 HDi and my Xantia HDi did it from time to time as well. It's French tradition!

Unplugged MAF and the car would go to 2500rmp then no more power, so not that. I think it is slow.

Not helped by getting in it after been treated to a blast in GMs Mx5. I think I have a go faster box sitting at home now - will plug it in when I get back.

Fuel wise it seems ok, got 340 to half a tank so far.

The key is actually getting worse over the day. Seems odd that it has just started today. Oh well.
