Can't be too old, thinking maybe 2001 - 2 ish? Not French. He doesn't do French (actually, I told him that).Should be able to get a 1.25 Zetec Fester for that surely with about 70 - 80K? pogweasel
Hmm. That's the sort of budget that can buy you anything and everything. Sure he could get a Festier for that, proabably less.Ultra-dull though. You could buy some obscenely stupid stuff with that kind of money, fast stuff, thirsty stuff, ancient stuff, anything. Tell your friend to bosh their £2000 against that Marina Koop 'thedoctor102' is selling on eBay. Stylish, frugal and in the sort of condition that it would last for years (unless they understeer into a hedge of course)

Do Fiestas of that age go frilly round the arches or anything bollocks like that?Has to be economical and in a low insurance group.I'll see if I can tempt him into a Cuore Avanzatzo TRX 44, you know that banzei thing that Mr. Hirst is selling. pogweasel
Is your friend shopping for a fridge-freezer or a car? Yes, festiers go grotty, my mate has had one from new (V-reg ghia) which is getting quite scabby now.

It will be for sale shortly though!
dollywobbler
Oh don't say that. I've always loved the Avanzato!
pandamonium
me too! I'm absolutely convinced I'll not be able to afford it when it does become available, but I can dream!
Mr Lobster
Should get a decent 1.25 Zetec Fiesta for that money. They can rot although should be pretty good still at that age. Shouldn't be too hard to find a tidy, lowish miler either.
AnthonyG
Do Fiestas of that age go frilly round the arches or anything bollocks like that?Yes, check the rear arches, end of the sills (in fact all along the bottom of the sills) and the area around the petrol filler cap.The later Mk4 Fiestas had all sorts of kit on them, looking at one for a friend at the weekend, a W reg 1.25 LX, which had a sunroof and air con! Rejected due to various things being not quite right, including the engine fault light not coming on when you turned the ignition on.For £1500-2000 you should get one of the best examples going. Last on the 51 reg plate - I've never seen an '02'.
Richard
It's a bad price to buy a car at. Often they are perilously close to the point where they cease to scrub up well and the value can drop into the low hundreds almost overnight. IMO it's better to pay £500 and use the money you save to look after it properly.

I wouldn't touch a Mk5 Fiesta for £2500, but a very good Mk4 will be perfectly easy to obtain for £1500.In my area anything privately advertised at £500 is normally a complete shit heap, whereas going up to £2000 gets puts you in a whole different category e.g. a 45k Rover 75 2.0 Y reg with FSH for £1400, 95K Volvo S40 2.0 51 reg for £1300. RedSparrow
I've got a 51 plate Fiesta (facelift, known as the 'smiling' fiesta in the trade) , 1.3 Endura engine-Totally reliable, no rust- I highly recommend them!Yes, a bit boring, but its not a Saxo and would be a perfect reliable first motor. garethj
Is your mate a new driver?Chap at work's son is 17, just passed his test and they've found a fairly good Ka2 (ex Cat C write off thanks to front bumper, headlights and a front wing but been nicely repaired). Car is £700, his insurance is £2050 third party only Ka is group 2, are there any group 1 cars? Would it make that much difference anyway?
r.welfare
I reckon a 51-plate Mk4 Fezza should still be pretty rust-free, but the earliest ones (N/P plate) are beginning to rot big time round the arches, sills and floors. How long does he want to keep it? Might be worth looking up someone local who will underseal/Waxoyl it properly, then it should keep the rot at bay.
face
I think an Suzuki Alto or a Daihatsu Cuore are group 1 insurance cars - you can get a cracker for £1500, generally well looked after one owner cars too. Add a set of £90 lowering springs and some 2nd hand alloys and you're away. The Cuore has a rev counter too Or get a nice clean K10 Micra - last for years will that.
