Domes Locost Kit car-Now Sold :(

In the old days, driving without a heater in an open car was normal. I once had a beer with an old bloke in the Western Isles who had delivered some old crock down to Edinburgh and chatted with the local Constabulary (unexpectedly) in a bar over a beer. They suggested the next watering hole, another 40-odd miles down the road, where they met again. And again, two or three times. They were more concerned he kept warm than sober. Apparently police bells were rung when they finally parted company somewhere North of Callander.

Where do you put the shopping?

It looks like an ideal winter commuter. Have you given it full throttle yet?

Not given it full throttle yet. It's on decent tyres (Toyo R888s) but I didn't think tonight was the night for that... Shopping?  That's what the BMW is for...

Yes please! Very envious, I did check that I could get into and out of a (very snug) 7 last summer, how long is this expected to stay in residence so I can plan excuses / reasons for the want need for this?

That is a damn good question and I'm the last person you should ask a question like that...

So, a few options were thought of for my next car. A Lotus Excel had been on my radar but the best (cheapest...) one I found went before I could get to it and the others around didn't do it for me. An MR2 was considered, a P6 also tickled my fancy but a trip to Kirkcaldy yesterday "for a look, I doubt I'll buy it" resulted in a bit of research and a slightly cheeky offer.

Onto tonight and the game was set...

Finished work, went home and collected the battle hardened Mrs Dome and of fofr the 20 odd mile drive to Kirkcaldy. On arrival the temperature was slightly low.

Now normally this would not be of concern. Monies were exchanged, paperwork signed and I got to drive my new steed for the first time. To the petrol station!

Â£9 later and the tank was full.

My (then) brother in law and I started to make one of these. We bought and cut up a mk2 escort estate for the bits. I welded quite a lot of the spaceframe, including extending some dimensions as we are both over 6'.

Then it got shelved and eventually junked. Probably for the best, my Ma took one look and said "at least I'll be dead before you finish it". She's still with us.

Awaiting updates with great interest. Mine would have the mighty 1.3 kent that's still lying around in the garage somewhere.

Er. Um. Hmmm. EEk.

Not sure. A drift car? With grippy tyres? and if you need a handbrake ur doin it rong.

In other news, that Driftland has killed more E36's and E39's than Vanos failure and drunken yuppies. There's always been a driftland in Fife, called the Stenton Roundabout. On two wheels it's the Knee Down Roundabout. Biggest roundabout in Europe at one time I believe.

That is ace. Not what I was expecting at all.

I have always, always wanted a Caterham or similar. A thread on it with your impressions/experiences/everything would be super, in your own time.

Is the engine pretty much standard? I drove a Caterham with about 120bhp-ish once and that was plenty much fast enough. Any chance of a video when you full throttle it for the first time? Pleasingly, it looks like even though the breaker bar is removed from inside, there's still plenty of places to impale your face. Funtime motoring.

My mate purchased one of these, and I foolishly agreed to a ride along

He scared the bejeesus out of me, the scenery was approaching at a greater rate of knots than my brain could process, the wind was rocking my glasses on my face, I was certain something was going to pull out in front of us and we would die instantly -- the fucking road was damp as well - never again :-P

he had a two litre pinto engine in his, race prepped, and he seemed to like it, I'll stick with my wafty barges thanks very much :-D

About ten years ago I owned a 1600 X-flow locost on side droughts, 4 speed box on an English axle. Did a few autotests in it and a couple of track days. Scary bastard of a car. Nowt wrong with it. Seriously fun wee car. I just couldn't get used to the level of exposure! Just paranoid and didn't feel safe. 2.0 red top will go like a bastard!

Last year mark was selling a red four door escort and took this in a deal, he didn't like it due to dodgy handling so put it on Gumtree and it headed back north,

My guess is the guy you got it from stuck those tyres on it and that was the handling sorted.

Aye, that ties in with my Facebook stalking. Mk2 Escort 4 door that now spends it's life at Driftland?

I suspect the handling has been "optimised" for drifting. It's set up pretty stiff but it's all adjustable.

No developments today due to the weather, however the hydraulic handbrake lever now has a new life and a cockpit cover has been ordered. I'll try and rig up a way of securing it to the car so I can leave it places.

I also need to work out how to fit a mountain bike on it, it WILL be getting taken mountain biking at some point.

probably but I wouldn't worry about it being abused as its done classic rallys for years and has had a pretty hard life, it was a bit beaten up around the edges.

I was worried for a minute that you meant the Locost had done classic rallys! That would take a brave man...

Now that's what I call a midlife crisis car !

That's not fair, I had my Lotus 7 when I was 23 so if that was my mid-life I'm seriously past my best before date now. I'm sure it will be great fun, I ran mine as my only car and survived, although did have a few interesting moments in the wet. I doubt I'd be able to get in and out of one now, let alone drive it.
