Executive Summary: Vectras, XR3i, MG Metros, Focus.. 10 shite retro cars and masses of track £125

[sorry, not sure if I should have posted this in the open area, mods please move if appropriate, cheers.]

It's Christmas Eve in an hour or two so it's not the best timing for the 'potential xmas present' season but I'm going to go with the angle that it's an ideal Christmas present for when you've disappointed someone and need to make amends, if you're so disorganised that you didn't get to the shops in time for the 25th, or if you were truly awesome at Christmas this year and now feel that you deserve some sort of reward for yourself.

This might be similar money to what some here spend on actual cars, but compared to the cost of new Scalextric sets and the limited track you get it's a lot of Scalextric stuff for not very much money with about as much track and cars as you could ever need for hours and hours of fun.

It's a massive set and including 50+ pieces of track and 10 working cars, 2 controllers and a powerpack. This would be a great set to get into/back into Scalextric, as it includes much, much more than you would find in a new Scalextric set for a similar price.

THE TRACK

This set contains some 'Classic' (old style) Scalextric track, the stuff with the lollypop shaped connectors, and includes some of the more interesting track pieces: Hump Back Bridge, Skid Chicane, Old School mechanical Lap Counter and a long 180degree Curved Chicane, all in good working condition.  The first photo shows this track set up on it's own, which makes a nice fun retro track. There's track border/barriers included to keep your showboating tail out action under control.

BUT WAIT A MINUTE THAT'S NOT ALL!!!  There's loads more with this set up!
Oh yes! There's a clue in the pair of Scalextric 'Classic to Sport' converter straights provided (see photo).

These connect the Classic track above to a load of newer type Scalextric 'Sport' track. This additional track includes 8x 90degree curved crossover track pieces, 2 pairs of long chicane 'side swipes' and lots of long straights and standard curves. There are also lots of track borders and barriers to catch cars on the bends. (see photos). Everything in the photos is included, although please note we'd like to keep the wooden floor. It's all packed into a large durable cardboard box. The floor is glued down.

When the whole track is set up it's massive. Even with the track snaking it's way inside itself and using as little of the floorspace as possible it still needs at least 2.5 x 3.5 metres (8x11ft) of floor space. If you had the space and imagination you could easily make a track that covers twice that size, and maybe re-live your childhood race track fantasies by making a huge track that goes all the way around the room, under the sofa, around the back of the TV and through a 'coffee table tunnel'.

The track was set up for these photos, and my son and I tested it and it all worked first time without any trouble. All the cars went round both lanes all the way without any nudging, poking or prodding so there's no dead track, and no frustration! I've got video of the cars going round to show that it all works as it should. Obviously the stuff is used and not brand new so I can't give any guarantees, because Scalextric track is notorious for bad connections, but for us it worked perfectly. I'm sure if there's any problems a quick tweak with a screwdriver or pliers on the connectors would have it sorted, but I doubt you'll need to.

THE CARS

Scalextric Rally Subaru Imprezza
Scalextric Rally Ford Focus
Both of these cars are 4wd, and both have front and rear lights. Both cars are fairly recent releases and are therefore very fast and handle really well as they have strong magnets ('magnatraction') to grip the track and corner at high speeds.

Scalextric Vauxhall Vectra Black
Scalextric Vauxhall Vectra Silver
Both of these are fast and stick to the track well with magnatraction, but can be made to powerslide on the corners more easily than the Focus and Imprezza.

Scalextric Ford Escort XR3i light blue
Scalextric Ford Escort XR3i dark blue
These cars are tricky to get good lap times from because they are from an era (1980's) when Scalextric cars were rubbish. They are tall, thin and have no magnets so they tip over easily.

post-16950-0-21490700-1450908019_thumb.jpg

Scalextric MG Metro 6R4 red/white
Scalextric MG Metro 6R4 blue/yellow
These are from the same era as the xr3i and are tricky cars just to get around the track, let alone think about driving fast. They are generally thought of as being just about the worst cars Scalexrtric have ever made in that they handle poorly, aren't very fast and don't look that good either. They do have a certain charm though, and if you like a challenge they can be very slightly enjoyable to race on occasions. Definitely cars for the dads rather than the kids.

Scalextric Scrapyard, 2x Ford XR3i & 1x MG Metro
There's also three almost complete cars, Metro and XR3i, that can easily be made to run by getting spares, or can be used as spare parts to keep the others running, or could be used to create a trackside pile up.

Late substitution: The red and white cars in the photos with the black cross are not included. Instead I have included the following cars:

post-16950-0-65191800-1450908119_thumb.jpg

Scalextric Lamborghini Gallardo yellow
Scalextric Nissan GTR red
Both of these cars have special guides that rotate the cars 180degs so you can spin around and go both ways around the track. These are only a few years old and are in very good condition, and come in their original boxes.

There's a good range of cars here, from fast and easy to control all the way to frustrating and hard to lap… so there's something for everyone, meaning that Dads and sons (and daughters, of course!) can race using different cars to match their level of ability/attention span using uneven cars to keep the racing close.
All cars have been inspected, opened up, cleaned as necessary to make sure that you can enjoy all of them as much as possible without having to constantly fiddle with them to get them working.

So… this set is huge, it combines the best of Scalextric 'Classic' and modern 'Sport' Track and has cars from 3 decades of Scalextric (80s, 90s and 00s) with the option to add either type of track, or even upgrade to Scalextric Sport Digital with the appropriate Digital Powerbase, cars and track pieces. I am confident that it will give hours of fun, and probably be the best late/very very early Christmas present anyone could possibly want.

This set is packaged in a sturdy 2x2x2ft box for easy transportation. Easiest is probably to collect from CR6, Surrey/South London, close to Junction 6 of the M25. I'm happy to coordinate this end if you want to organise a courier to collect this for you.
Thanks for looking, reading and imagining how awesome this would be set up in your lounge with all your awesome mates round for an epic race night. If you've got this far you must really, really want it… go on, what are you waiting for…BUY IT!

Have a bump.

I've never even had a go at Scalextric, but quite fancy putting a big layout in the loft once I've cleared out some of my parents' (and my) old stuff.  This might be a good way of getting started.

Trouble is, I've been talking about clearing out the loft for at least 15 years, and buying another box of stuff to put in it may not in fact be the way forward.  I also have a queue of full size cars demanding attention.

I shall think about it.  If someone beats me to it while I'm thinking, that's fine too.

Fingers crossed it looks like this has found a new home but I've just found the vids I took when I set it up to photograph.

Metro 6r4:

Subaru & Focus:

Vectras:

Big track:

If the cars seem bit slow or jerky it's because my son (6) was controlling them and he was under strict instructions to be careful and sensible!
