phil_lihp
The ABS was playing up on this, putting the light on and kicking in when it shouldn't, a diagnostic session showed the front passenger wheel speed sensor was at fault and there was no way I was paying Honda £230 for a new one. £30 later, a known good one off a breaker was delivered and I fitted it yesterday morning. All better! Incidentally, what a joy to work on this car, four 10mm bolts which have been under the front wheelarch since 1992 came off with no problem, all look in perfect condition under the grime (now cleaned) and the entire job took about 20 minutes including removong/refitting the wheel. It does feel like a really nice, quality machine and I'm not just saying that, same sort of sturdy, robust engineering as I've seen on the Volvo 940 in a way, if a bit less over-engineered than the big Swede. I'm not convinced the gearbox is shifting quite right, it's eager but a little bit clunky when cold and sometimes hunts up and down at higher speeds. I don't know when the fluid was last done, it's not squeaky clean so I'll be changing that ASAP, just need to get some fresh ATF-DW1 from the local Honda specialist. More expense but I'd rather it was sold working exactly as it should.
Honey Badger
Careful using DW-1 in older gearboxes it can cause issues wearing the clutch packs and torqe convertor, carlube do a Z1 compatible fluid which is rated well, as is the Valvoline fluid. I swapped the transmission fluid in my coupe for DW1 and the fluid has burnt quite quickly, it was initally smoother but has gone back to being harsh. phil_lihp
phil_lihp
Good to know, thanks! I read that it had to be DW1 but pleased to find that there's other alternatives.
Honey Badger
Good to know, thanks! I read that it had to be DW1 but pleased to find that there's other alternatives. This is the one I've seen used in the autoboxes of the Accord 3lt coupes http://www.carlube.co.uk/transmission-fluids/carlube-atf-u-automatic-transmission-fluid it's Z1 compatible it will just need changing more often. If you do go for DW-1 Coxs Honda seem to the cheapest http://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/genuine-honda-atfdw1-4-litres-p-2219.html I really want this car but as my work situation is a uncertain at the moment I can't consider buying it, hope it stays in house though so I get a go at it at a later date. phil_lihp

phil_lihp
Well, this is still here, apart from one keen chap who took it for a test drive yesterday (he text me today to say he's decided not to go for it) it's had practically zero interest. The auto box still slips a little when it feels like it at 60+ mph but less since I topped it up, it probably does need a flush and refill and I have the fluid but broke my ancient 70s socket ratchet trying to get the sump plug off, it's seriously tight. At this point I'd probably entertain a swap, I like it but not enough to keep it, it's not practical enough and just doesn't do it for me although I have had fun with it and it's probably the prettiest car I've ever owned. stripped fred
Have you considered a raffle?
phil_lihp
It was suggested, would there be much interest? 59 tickets = £11 per ticket.
Dick Longbridge
I'd be up for it. Number 14 I reckon.
purplebargeken
That is one gorgeous looking car.
phil_lihp
I think that's a fairly conclusive negatory on the raffle, in fairness I wasn't really expecting there to be many takers, there's already another 2.0 Honda coupe being roffled plus the Rover 75. This does seem to be incredibly difficult to sell, I'm at a bit of a loss short of auctioning it and taking a massive loss, which is looking like the only option now (a very, very similar one just sold for £380 on eBay!) . Since the beginning of December I've had it advertised for £750 on local Facebook, Gumtree, C&C, eBay BIN, Prelude forum, PistonHeads and RetroRides with no responses from any of them save the one chap who came and looked at it the other day. Not even any realistic offers. I realise it's a slightly odd combination, smallest engine and auto in what is supposed to be a sports car (and to my mind it drives like one) and it's not the best time of year for people to have money to burn but I was expecting slightly more interest. I didn't think it was expensive and the price is considerably lower than some (another chap on RR is advertising one very similar to mine for £1500) but perhaps I have been a bit optimistic. I don't know. Any suggestions?
sporty-shite
To be fair, it might be worth waiting for the other Honda to go. Three riffles at once is a bit much, even for here. Also, if you'd be willing to take less, it might be worth pitching the raffle a bit cheaper. I'd take a couple of tickets at £8-10. Just a thought. phil_lihp
I quite agree, I wouldn't have started it while the other two were running but I might try once more when the other two have cleared. I suppose it's a Hoffle, anyway. I could probably cope with £10 per ticket, I'm already set to make a fair loss on this one, such is life!
Dick Longbridge
The more I think about it, the more I reckon you should get the slushbox drained, and new ATF to fill it back up. I know it isn't an expensive car, but whether you Razzle/Hiffle or just sell it straight, it's going to give the new owner more peace of mind (assuming it sorts the problem.) phil_lihp
You're right, and I do have the fluid, I just couldn't get the plug off so next week I'll probably have to get my mechanic to do it. It's ridiculously tight and with the car up on the jack there's not much space for a long breaker bar under the arch, with it up on a ramp it'd be a lot easier. Also need to get a new wrench now, damn things only last 40 years it seems!

phil_lihp
I've been offered a swap for this with cash my way: https://www.gumtree.com/p/alfa-romeo/alfa-romeo-gtv-mot-failure/1149827372 Not my cup of tea but I'd reckon on a set of discs and pads, two rear shocks and a lambda sensor to see a new MOT. From what I've seen on eBay most 2.0 ones of a similar age only make about £400 or so with a full MOT, unless there's something about this one I'm missing. What do we think? I'm inclined towards 'no' unless he knocks it down to £200 or less, unless I'm being too harsh.

phil_lihp
I make them £300 all in from a quick scan of ebay, trouble is if it's only worth £400-£500 when fixed then I'm out of pocket there.
phil_lihp
Right then chaps, I've been offered a straight swap for this: http://www.swapz.co.uk/swapz/5661424/Volkswagon_Polo_1_3i_GT_Coupe/ He's only up in Bristol so not far to go, the dent and mileage are downsides but it seems like a rare-ish one. I'd only be doing this to obtain something of similar worth for an easier sale, not my cup of tea at all but is this a fair deal? I'm not up on my VWs, they seem madly popular around this area but these Polos seem a little unloved.
djimbob
If you're in the market for 90's shite, I would be up for a swap for the Peugeot 205 I recently bought off StrangeAngel, I'm sure if you go thru his posts there will be record of it and some pics, but I will have a go at some new photos tomorrow hopefully if you like? It's done low miles for a '95 M reg, drives well, is a 1.6 petrol auto, the Mardi Gras edition for rare shiteness, power steering, electric windows, leaky sunroof (or aerial or something - not terrible, a couple of drops land on the passenger's legs on start up), 3 door, quite a nice thing especially with the groovy modern type wheel trimz I treated her to on purchase, Peugeot overmats, and a deckless stereo from the Bay that Bluetooths nicely. SA got his backdoors mildly smashed in and so fitted a white hatch replacement, which I badly rattle canned in the correct blue, but it looks ok from a distance in the dark! There is a section or the exhaust near the rear that has some gunk slapped around, which I assume is blowing a bit, but doesn't affect the performance much, probably helps it, and there is a warning light comes on at higher speeds on motorways which I think is a CAT, but again doesn't affect performance, apparently been like it for years. My Missus has been using this beauty to ferry Grandkids up and down the motorway between her idiot son and his estranged wife over the holiday period, and must have done a couple of thousand miles overall no bother, but we're really after a bigger people lugger - and lo! I bought a Kia Sedona, so that means with my logic I am due another sporty auto more commensurate with my love of Jap crap - I know, I just like getting new (used) cars, shouldn't have to justify it really let me know what you think Phil, could meet you halfway, or further if it suits, Cheers Jim (in Leeds West Yorks) ps this is the Sedona I bought tonight in the dark - collection very dull indeed, no drama and half a tank of diesel http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231812827222?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT eddyramrod
phil_lihp
Thanks, I'll pass on the Peugeot though as I don't think that'll be much easier for me to sell given the engine size and auto box! Not sure about its value either. I've been advised to avoid the above Polo too as it's not worth what he would like. I do now have a chap coming to see it tomorrow night and I've been offered a swap for a '99 VW Golf GTi (sadly the slower 2.0) as a backup plan. Dick Longbridge
Have you tried a classified ad on Knob Bay, with decent photos and a properly worded ad? Sort the 'box wobbles and would have thought it'd sell? Don't know if others agree, but could be worth waiting until the start of February to advertise it is most are still brassic after the recent Coca Cola sponsored celebration. As for boggo pez mkiv Golfs, can't see they'd sell any better than the Prelude...
phil_lihp
Auto box is now sorted, fresh fluid was installed today, the old stuff was a bit mucky apparently so it should be in fine fettle now. phil_lihp
I've just taken this out for a drive to stretch its legs and test it out and I'm pleased to say the auto box is much improved, I thought it was alright before but now it's had fresh fluid flushed through it the changes are smoother, it downchanges more readily and most importantly it doesn't slip in top gear any more. Money well spent! Dick Longbridge
