Is the car an ungrateful bastard?  It certainly seems that way at times but a couple of weeks ago it excelled at covering many miles on country roads an a decent speed and did exactly what was required.

 

At the end of the day it is just a tool to do a job which it does well.

Glass covered on insurance and was just a phonecall and credit card number away.

 

There are more important things in life to be upset about and most importantly I now have a heated rear window that works!

The GSR was used for the monthly Scotoshite meet last Wednesday and decided it wanted some of the attention the Octavia has been getting.

On the 160 mile round trip there was an odd vibration which I couldn't pinpoint.

 

Thursday morning I was on the way to work and the handbrake was behaving 'funny' and by the time I had got to work there was the rancid smell of hot friction material. A quick trip round the car showed the rear left wheel hot. I left it in gear with the handbrake off and it was fine on the way home.

 

Yesterday afternoon I went to the workshop and had a look. I discovered both rear calipers not freeing off so I cleaned them up and wound the pistons back in which has stopped the sticking but now the handbrake doesn't work because too much travel.

 

New pads are to be collected and the handbrake can be adjusted after that.

 

While I was there I had a look at why the drivers door window would need help to lower.

Channel re-greased and now working as it should.

 

The only other excitement has been Chuck's new* Xantia but that is written about in her thread which is here.

Those rear callipers can freeze up in icy weather, hopefully it was just that?

 

More than that unfortunately.

 

 

 

I got some new pads for the rear and set to it today.

Unfortunately the calipers are not free enough to release or adjust up so I have looked about and they are £150 each so that isn't happening.

I have however ordered seals and pistons for them so hope that will get them back into proper working condition.

This is in for a look over to see what is needed for the MOT next month. It may be going to the mother in law who's Corsa was looked at pre MOT and they stopped counting at about £1000.

After the last thrilling* update I ordered some stuff from ebay and this arrived.

Bailey assumed the position and I took off the worst caliper first.

I eventually got the piston out using skill and ingenuity brute force and ignorance

After the driver's side was done I did the passenger's side but the piston was fine so just treated it to new seals and reassembly was quite easy this time.

 

Brakes bled up and handbrake adjusted and I have great success.

 

I thought the brakes were good before but the rears were obviously not doing anything. Now they have joined the party the brakes are excellent.

I will let them bed in for a bit and check it all over before the March track day.

That Workshop would look great with a Land Rover in it...

 

Not enough oil on the floor, see ;)

It has had more than its fair share of land rover oil on its floor and currently it is at the point of bursting yet again because of good intentions.

 

I can't quite believe how much of a state it is in again!

The Octavia has been used mainly by my better half, I drove it the other day and noticed possible warped brake discs so went and had a look yesterday. 

The front ones seem ok and have quite a bit of material on them but the rear were a bit shit so I ordered some and collected them this morning.

 

In the workshop and wheel off.

The same was done to the other side and I got in and gave the pedal a bit of gentle pressure a few times to get the calipers to reset to where they need to be. 

The pedal when pressed properly sank.

I moved the car out of the way and

Back in position and a quick look showed fluid coming from the rear arm and ending up on the floor.

My usual method of keeping the brake pedal depressed was deployed to hopefully not have all the brake fluid leak out.

The internet was consulted and the relevant pipe was ordered from ebay which should hopefully be here later this week.

 

The rear arm has a plastic shield covering the brake pipe and abs wire to stop them getting damaged, this had kept loads of shit next to the pipe and rotted it out. 

Better to burst in the workshop than out on the road with the Mrs driving it though.

Yes it must be personal! I feel a bit guilty as I advertised this car on here for my friend. He had it a couple of years and drove it all around europe, and in his ownership all it required was a coil. When he decided to sell, I seriously considered buying it as I thought it was cheap and it was a known good* one.

 

I am so glad I didn't!!

Have a picture of the gsr up at the workshop with a dehumidifier in it drying out the tools and boot after attempting to fix the Touring brothers 335 on Saturday at knockhill in the rain / hail.

The only real relevance of the picture is that there is no Octavia there any more after eBay, postman and myself did our bit.

 

I will give it a few days and then bleed the brakes again after buying some more fluid.
