3VOM
Why not just have a lightning bolt? If I was none the wiser I’d have wondered why a pez car had a glow plug light.Cheapness? Same instruments in diesel as petrol maybe?
3VOM
The internet implies engine loom and chafing in a couple of posts. And there are a few variations of loom and ecu connection. You can add some relay connections on some versions and the coil packs don't have the greatest reputation either.
Tickman
Time to look at Fren.First temperature, I had a look at the sensors and used some contact cleaner everywhere. I let the car start to get warm as I wanted to check the thermostat. It was knackered so that got replaced. Then I went to compare the two as I thought the engine rocked a bit too much. The lower engine mount was torn so that got swapped. This was needed. As were these due to having the tightest bolt and the socket set not having the correct size in a 1/2 inch drive. (Thanks Bucketeer) Then I decided priorities of fixing things should be implemented then ignored straight away. This used the black bit here. Next there was an occasional lumpy idle and a slight misfire so I took one plug out and it was a lovely biscuit brown so I started swapping the leads over and discovered this. Duct tape does not make a good fix, swapping the leads does though. I also discovered I didn't need to make the wooden ramps as all you have to do is remove the front of the car with a wall and the ramps are just fine. Finally all the contact cleaner and the thermostat has made a joint effort to produce this. I have a rhythmic knock on acceleration, if quite gentle with acceleration then it is not there. The car has had a new driveshaft recently (the longer one) and there was no knocking at all on the test drive and on full lock either direction. The engine mount will not have done it any favors but I think it should be ready for careful service to commence. Oh and the speedometer gives up after a short amount of time. Conrad D. Zelandeth
I seem to recall these actually being surprisingly fun to chuck around, just the whiny soundtrack that would have got to me. If they're anything like Renaults of the 80s it'll benefit from new bushes on the gearshift soonish. The box with a lightning bolt (or oscilloscope trace) in is Renault's equivalent of the usual "check engine" light. They double it up with the glow plug indicator because cheap. Zelandeth
Better way to find a dodgy HT lead than I used to find the ones in the Lada - which told me it was in need of replacement by giving me an almighty belt when I brushed against it. Tickman
Over the past few weeks it has become more noticeable that the Alfa doesn't get up to temperature. The most noticeable was one evening where it took 20 minutes for me to stop shivering as the air coming out of the fan was being warmed* by the tepid coolant in the car.Thorough* research showed that the thermostat was not the most joyous task to replace. With the cars destiny come MOT time in April fairly certain then I decided that the Renault 5 thermostat was a sensible choice to try. The required item was ordered online from ECP where it would be in on Friday at 10 for collection, their usual sale code brought this in below £6. I arrived to collect and when I eventually got to the end of the queue (two people = 10 minutes) I was informed that it looked to have been collected. I informed him that this was not the case so he eventually went to have a look for it. It was exactly where it should have been so after he informed me of his amazement as to why this had happened (delaying me even more) I happily left with my new part. Today was hopefully the day for some warmth to arrive so with the use of a Dremel (not actually but the cheaper version) off came a couple of clips and the hose was free. I tried to just 'push it in' but this was not to be. A small application of washing up liquid got it part way in but no more.I needed some help in the for of 32mm waste pipe which I had. After some extra effort I was finished and time to test. This is the first time in my ownership that this has happened. I am expecting it to fail and stick shut so we shall see how long this lasts! Inspector Morose
It's a bodge but at £60 odd for a decent proper part that seems to be no guarantee of longevity, sod it, I'll continue to bodge. I'm not that sure the R5 thermostats fail closed but I'm just keeping an eye on mine. Tickman
Tickman
Operation 'get real' is in full swing here. I am Going through what I have and getting realistic with what I can and will do so first off is this. Bought for Chuck to learn to drive in and I replaced the porus sump then I magically had glittery oil, getting turned into bean tins on Friday. Next is this which was bought as a breaker, I have had a couple of bits off it and it is very rusty, a massive dose of cannot be bothered is in effect here. No documents so have to find someone who is happy scrapping it without. Hopefully bean tins soon. Just a small glimps at a fraction of the rust. Not mine and tucked into the corner, probably for sale but a bit too much effort for me to weld back up. This space now has the Series 2 in it. Took Sonic up to clean out the fuel lines and sort the clutch hydraulics. Looking at selling a couple of things, the Toledo will be going, not sure if I should do a 'Trigger' to it and sell in the spring when shiny. I would be looking for near £1000 at the moment so I don't lose too much on it. It has had quite a bit done to it but it is best described as shabby! The other item that will be going is the red MX5, it is immense fun and brilliant at Knockhill but with my knackered joints I struggle a little too much getting in and out of it. Again this is a should wait until spring sale but I have made a decision and so it is up for sale! Another priced at £1000 so I don't lose too much. Doesn't have a hard top. I am not expecting any real interest but if anyone is interested just let me know. If all these go I will still have two Morris Minors, one Talbot camper van, one Series two Land Rover, The Alfa 156 and Chuck's Clio to look after so I am not short of stuff! Supernaut
I REALLY WISH I OWNED A GARAGE. The Toledo has far more appeal to me than the MX-5. That MX-5 actually wore a red hardtop for a while, which I had on my mk2 MX-5 then I inadvertently sold the hardtop to gm long before I joined this forum! Tickman
Well Facebook came up trumps and this left today. This started to get a little bit of attention. I also had a tidy up in the dark corner and professionally* fitted* a light. Yes it is held up with a seatbelt bracket on one end and some cable ties at the other. It is better than it was before. Tickman
I got myself set up so I can actually see in the workshop. Up in the air and a quick poke about underneath shows that it needs the very front of the sills attended to and then cosmetic stuff so made a start. Tickman
Today started cold and wet, sleet up here not snow, and I popped off to lidl for son lunch on the way to the workshop. When I returned to the Alfa it decided NO. So I walked home got the proven rescue vehicle and went back. This got it going no problem so it took it to the lockups and now it is plugged in. A couple of checks show it is getting 14V while running and the little green bit in the battery is still green so I am putting it down to winter and everything being on all the time. The inclination to carry on with cars today has vanished and it is at best 3° so I'm being a lightweight and sorting other stuff out instead. theshadow

Tickman
I needed to get all my stuff back to the workshop and I managed to get it all in here which I was not expecting. I wanted to get the codes read on Chuck's Clio and my code reader would not connect, I met up with 320T and his code reader which connects to his Ph1 Clio's wouldn't either. While trying I was saying about a knocking under load and he pointed me towards the mount on the gearbox side, when rocked this did indeed have a lot more play then the one in the Black Clio sothey got swapped. Unfortunately that didn't eliminate the knocking (even though is was well passed it) So the next plan was the short driveshaft as the longer one was replaced earlier this year.I had already liberated it from the black Clio earlier so at 8:30 this morning I was here. Shortly after this was the scene. After not too long this became the conundrum. Could I fit the ABS shaft into the non ABS car. After quite a bit of measuring I couldn't see any real differance apart from the abs ring so in it went. I had discovered that a Heroes tub contains the perfect amount of gearbox oil when you remove the driveshaft. so this went back in with the use of the oil pump from Lidl. Once this was done I attempted the speed sensor which is located at the back of the engine just above where the two driveshafts join. This is below the exhaust so access is fun* Eventually this was replaced and I took it for a brief test drive and there was no knocking under load with the bonus of the speedo actually working. Proof if proof was needed that it actually works! Another thanks to 320T for the speed sensor and telling me where it was and how to change it! Hopefully I won't have anymore tinkering needed until next year. Dave_Q, dome, Stanky and 4 others

Tickman
The MOT is due at the end of February for Patch and I decided to use the free time to give it a once over. One rear caliper has been slightly sticky so this was looked at too. I used my new to me cheap lift which is excellent. There is at least 12 inches between the bottom of the tyres and the floor and I can zip around under the car with a car creeper which is really useful. The workshop got the tools tidied up and rubbish in the bin so it is a bit clearer for next time I'm there. drum, 320touring, dome and 2 others
