So after last nights Scotoshite visit in the Jag I decided that it needed to have the Dab aerial on the windscreen put to use so a quick trip to Halfords and I left with a Pioneer of some sort. With the fitting charge of £30 being better spent elsewhere I fitted it while still in the car park and enjoyed some Absolute Radio 90's on the way home.

 

Also I had a mystery button, I didn't do my usual of just pressing to find out and cheated and messaged Mr Pirate who informed me that it operates the starter motor. I was delighted I hadn't tried it while plodding down the Motorway!

Quick fleet update:

The Roffle Jag is still doing what it should nice and quietly, I had to resync the remote as I had to use the key in the door for a few days and that is not in the spirit of the Jag.

 

The Green Clio is performing nicely and doing its job as a L plate carrier admirably.

 

With Sid the mental 172 gone to Sporty Shite the available track car slot could be classed as empty. This was solved* by a notification from Dome about a Clio 182 on facebook not far from me. It was a typical advert of 'not used anymore, has a misfire, Cat c or d, at a relatives house and needs gone tomorrow'

I obviously asked what time he was available!

 

I went along the following morning to collect.

 

The misfire meant it was running on three cylinders on the way home, unpleasant but still made it fine.

 

It looks ok from a distance with a Jag in the way.

It is currently at the workshop next to the Oxford with quite a lot of room around it.

The indicators were flashing a bit fast so I checked the bulbs and the rears were not working, because they were missing, all of them!

So what is it like?

 

After the injector change it drives not too badly.

 

The good:

It does function as a car and is quite nippy.

It is quite comfy inside.

MOT until August.

Was cheap.

 

The bad:

Tracking needs done.

Left hand side of the car dented quite a bit.

Drivers door looks like someone opened it with a crowbar.

Boot dented.

Noticeably slower than its predecessor (Sid the 172 feels quite a lot faster)

Gearbox crunches when in higher rev range.

Clutch is not quite right, not sure how to describe it.

Clutch pedal VERY heavy.

Engine noisy (almost certainly the dephaser pulley or someone has fitted and disguised a Transit diesel engine very well, it is that bad)

Air bag light on.

SERV light on.

Rear section of the exhaist is not standard and bangs off the bottom of something even after adjusting it, the grinder will come out to sort that.

 

I cannot currently think of any other issues as it is getting quite depressing writing the list.

 

 

Overall it is a track car and shall be treated as such. The belt and dephaser will be inspected and then most likely ignored.

Having driven said chariot, I'm not concerned at all. It seems a solid base to start from!

 

Your state of mind may have been affected by welding!

 

If you need any parts, give us a shout. Got an abundance of Clio 172/182 parts in the garage, nearly enough to build another it feels like. Got the stuff to bin off the AC if you need it as well.

 

Only a matter of time until something breaks in a big way, it is a sporty Clio after all.

So the Oxford left the workshop and less than 24 hours later there was a Peugeot 205 squatting for a week.

 

That left and normal levels of enthusiasm returned (none)

 

Meg's Clio has been going great returning 40mpg even with just doing lots of round the block stuff as a learner car

 

One of the door mirrors came with no cover on the back so I took this one off.

And fitted two of these from Chuck's old car.

It also got an oil and filter change which looked like it was very needed.

 

 

 

Next in the queue is the Minor. 

HillmanImp was asking about a car roller and I said I had one and would document its first use.

 

You get a bracket for each wheel stud. This bolts on with your nuts when the wheel is removed. Then the roller part is fitted to these.

Then you fit the piece to connect the two together.

As I am fiscally challenged and this is the budget version without the piece to motor it over I then jacked it up to see how easy it would be. Very easy.

With the budget version and no friends you use an engine crane to lift it over and support it with axle stands on the roller. 

 

This will happen next week after another Clio sunroof leak resolution.

 

If you can afford the motor or have friends then go down that route would be my opinion!

I think it will make the world of difference for me. Where I live now it horrible to work on cars as the garage is too small and the driveway is horrid to lie on etc. Not like the good old days when I had this:

I have been looking for solutions and one of these looks like a belting idea.

 

Will have to try and get myself some friends to help with the rolling.

Yes axle stands on the appropriate bar hole* it in place

 

Does this not put massive sideways loads on the suspension / steering that it wasn't designed to take ? Otherwise, it does look bloody useful, welding upside down is just not fun.

The weight of the car won't exceed 1G of cornering forces, so i doubt it's outside the design limits.

 

Yep, design limits is exactly where I was heading with my reply above. Thanks for reminding me of those ;)

 

But on any car there is always a chance it is utterly fucked, then you are utterly fucked!

 

Fixed that for you!

 

Don't think the car makes a difference but the integrity of what you hope to tip over might!

A three fold update here!

 

A quick trip to Manchester in the Jag went well, the trip home however had a little issue that involved using a tiny tire.

 

Thankfully I had a pit crew willing to help.

Thankfully travelling at an average of 58MPH gives you 32MPG in the Jag!

 

 

 

 

 

Next on the list was Meg's Clio which cry's inside when it rains. I didn't think it was an over emotional car so put it down to the usual Clio sunroof issues.

Just over an hour start to finish with the only* casuality being the cheap Aldi 10mm ratchet spanner no longer ratchitting.

 

*apart from really itchy hands from the headlining.

It wasnt until right now that I realised you had 2 Minors!

 

It isn't mine, it is the Mrs which makes it top of the queue!

 

That reminds me, I still have your other wing.

 

And I have the drywall screws for you sitting at the workshop for you! (and did have when you last visited but I'm an idiot)

Some stuff has been happening, not much but some...

 

 

Chuck's Clio (Fren) needed a once over as it was marking its spot with oil when parked. 

It turned out to be the oil filter needing tightened! Not had that happen before when I have fitted a new one.

 

Next was the exhaust was knocking on the spare wheel well. I had an insert and a spare bracket so went to take the old one off and this happened:

All three bolts came out! Quite a miracle.

 

 

Next was giving the 182 a once over before Knockhill.

Another exhaust issue, it has some aftermarket exhaust that hits off one of the old exhaust hanger, not anymore:

Now stopping power, I had noticed that the brakes were lacking in feel and some ability so a quick check was on the cards.

 

The outer pad n this side was hanging out by about 10mm!

Now changed and fitted with the retaining springs.

Front pads changed and the horrid stewed tea looking brake fluid flushed through.

Need to add some more gear oil and test drive so the pads can bed in.

Sadly oil leaks have become life for me, 50% of my fleet do it! Hope the blue 182 provides sufficient GLFS.

 

It does indeed provide sufficient GLF's I have corrected you minor error above as it is a 182 Even though it is noticeably slower than Sid the silver 172 but we won't mention that!

I added some gearbox oil to the 182 yesterday. Who would have thought that adding 2 litres of oil would help!

 

 

 

So to get the 182 home I decided to take up my neighbours Picasso that was MOTed at the start of the month which it passed.

 

I managed to sneak it in through this gap, just. The Black car isn't mine:

I will investigate properly next week as I need to order up sills or repair panels, haven't decided yet which.

 

The drive home got the brakes bedded in so I will use it over the next few days to see if it is fine for Knockhill, first impressions are that it is. Fingers crossed!
