What’s the perfect car? Better than that, what’s your perfect car?

You want something individual of course, something where there were only a few hundred ever brought to the UK. You also want something with character, a zippy 1.8 litre twin cam engine would do the job, mated with a slick gearchange so you can relive those heady hot-hatch days when we had less flab and more hair. It should be practical too, we’re not expecting TDi levels of economy but 38mpg is good.

Reliability would be good, for many of us it’s an impossible dream. What would be ideal is a car with only 62,000 miles plus it’s got Japanese reliability and it’s already been road tested and the niggling faults sorted out by a caring, trusted driver (feedback comments include “what an awesome bloke, would buy a knackered old shed from againâ€Â, “he’s like a cross between the Doctor and Cavcraft, trusted seller, A*, “His word is his bond – A. Daleyâ€Â

How can you get all of this low mileage, fun hot hatch action? By coming down to Bedfordshire with £800 and zooming away in your own Suzuki Baleno GSR. The benefits include:

A really nice car to drive, whether this is because they were good to start with or just because it’s only got 62k I dunno.

Reasonable paintwork

About 9 months MoT

Newish front tyres

Stereo that plays mp3 CDs

Power steering

There’s a thread of me collecting it here, with some updates of running it. The battery might not make it through another winter and one of the callipers (discs on all 4 wheels – sporty!) was sticky but that was a couple of months ago and after a few hard stops the problem hasn’t come back.

It's currently doing 55 miles a day commuting with the occasional longer trip, it's never let me down and Mrs_garethj called it "alright", high praise indeed but mostly because it's just a car and doesn't need any fiddling about to use.

Here's the stuff an eBay ad leaves out:

It doesn't let water in.

It doesn't use any water, uses about half a pint of oil after 6000 miles.

Everything works, electric windows, heater, central locking etc

No warning lights on, they all illuminate then go out.

No funny wobbles or clonks, feels very secure at speed.

Paint lacquer a bit ropey in a few places if you're very fussy.

All tyres hold air forever.
