Youth Of Today etc...

ARSES.To cut a long and boring story short, my mum called me yesterday and mentioned that she was seeing a friend of hers today for the first time in about a year. This is a friend I have a particular interest in, as she always turned up in a lovely blue W reg Talbot Horizon, which she'd had since the late 80s... Every time she used to come roung I'd remark on how great the Horizon was and then bugger off quickly as the rest of her conversation is always pretty dull...Anyhoo, I asked my mum to say to her that when she wants to get rid of it I'll have it etc... I rang my mum today to make sure she hadn't forgotten...'Oh yeah, she turned up in some modern thing, not sure what it was''Er... OK, what happened to the Talbot?''She gave it to her son''Did you ask if he wanted to sell it?''He didn't like it in the end''Bugger, what an idiot, you mean he's already sold it?''He scrapped it and bought a Corsa''WHAT?! What was wrong with it?!''Nothing, just nobody wants old cars these days, do they? Probably couldn't give it away''I DO! WTF! WHAT A WANKER.'Seriously, this has really pissed me off today.I really can't see the logic of some people, maybe it's just me but I honestly can't understand why anybody would prefer a 10 year old Corsa to a nice '81 Talbot... Even when I was 18 (not that long ago) I'd hate to be driving a boring modern(ish) hatchback like everyone else. If I'd been given that I'd have been well happy, scrapping my free car and buying with my own money an inferior replacement definitely wouldn't have crossed my mind.Perhaps it's the opposite to all those yoofs who want to be 'individual' with their cars: 'a fuggin Talbot?! What's that, mum? none of my mates have one so it must be shit, I need a Corsa otherwise people might notice me driving around'If I find he's been 'modifying' said Corsa to stand out from the crowd, I'm likely to actually kick his face off. Or at leat attempt to, as I think he's bigger than me.RANT OVER. IT'S SAFE TO COME OUT NOW.

See it all the time, unfortunately. Have a browse on ebay, full of old chod that well-intentioned, and actually generous parents have bought which have been subsequently been rejected by the selfish fucked-up brats they spawned to replace themselves Tragic. One i just missed today was a 1.4 dizzle 106, perfectly tidy and ultra cheap car, why would some spotty oik NOT want that? You know who you can blame for all this? THE FRENCHIt all started when Citroen started dishing out free insurance on their underpowered teen-wank mobiles... why spend £1000 for your insurance when you can have £0 insurance and £1000 on tick (a year for 5 years + baloon payment, but this is irrelevant....ish). So £100 a month on a C-reg Polo with fag-burned interior, crap brakes and 31 bhp, or £100 a month for a brand spanker C1. Easy to see which they choose, even if it promotes debt and 'dumbs down' motoring....When I were a lad, you were grateful for what you got given... and anyone gifted a car worth more than a grown-ups weekly pay was derided as a c*nt. Progress?

Part of the problem is that some of us are getting old  To an 18 yo a 1990 car is from before they were born, and unless there is someone in the family who ignites their interest its just an old car and old = crap, and don't forget peer pressure. I have to think about mk4 Cortinas because I don't think of them as old cars, just cars that have been about for a while.I know cause I old.pogweasel...are you suffering from cabin fever or piles you old GRUMP

I kind of had the opposite problem. My dad is a mechanic, so I think he looked at what the lads that worked for him drove, and assumed I would like the same. I ended up with an 88 Nova 1.0. Problem was he also bought me this horrendous body kit which he thought Id love. I wrote the car off 2 weeks after passing my test, so luckily the body kit was never fitted!Anyway, when I was 18 I would have loved something like a Talbot! At 6th form it was all Novas Astras Minis and Metros (a mate was bought a nice MG one by her boyfriend, probably the best motor in the entire 6th form!)My dad has 2 Alfa GTV juniors, a Talbot-Lotus Sunbeam, a Fordson truck and a Berkely 3 wheller! So I remember expecting something a bit more old and unusual than a Nova!

The olds bought it, I insured it. Purchased on the Thursday, rolled it on Sunday. Drove it about until the Mot ran out, then scrapped it, bought a 1976 1.3 Mk2 crappi. Lovely.(not)

This is true, from the age of 4 to 7 we lived in the tiny flat above his garage, mum hated it but I remember loving sitting at the window watching cars coming and going.I owe my dad a lot actually, it is only thanks to him and his help that I can keep these old bangers running- Luckily he sympathises as he has owned loads of old rubbish over the years!

I seem to recall seeing a Mini Cooper S (can't remember if it was a Mk1 or 2) for sale last year with the tag line "unwanted gift for daughter." I bet she's poncing about in a Pug 206 CC or something else that's the sort of shite we DON'T like.

Yeah, but I wouldn't have a Mini Cooper S (BINI) if it was GIVEN to me.Well, I would, but it would be in the 'trader the next day for some useless estate agent bint.

I think, in the main, proliferation of credit (and/or inheritance/equity release by parents) is the issue. Back when I started driving, you drove an old crudheap because that's all you could afford to buy/insure/fuel/repair for cash (I'm using the same economic model to this day!). I had some drastically undesirable vehicles, but it was better than public transport.Incidentally when I was in the 6th form (1994) a fella in my class had a brand-new AX Debut bought for him by his parents (£6k in those days!) which was, thankfully, immediately soiled by another mate throwing up in the back seat, post-lunchtime pub session

Yup, same here, 86 I had a Austin 1300 which led on to a succession of £50 shitters, mate at college had a Viva HB and another one had a Cortina - but we was all dead jelous of Chris Weir and his ex Securicor Escrote Van (which had a mattress in the back and then got nicked and used in the Nat West bank robberyRobbing Gits )Actually perhaps Im diving headlog into my mid life crisis, but I still want a scrote van with a mattress....

Most 18 year olds will want something 'smart and credible' and to most people eyes, a 25 year old car, from a marque which no longer exists seems like a bleak prospect. Its the kind of car which gives you bugger all cred with the birds and a laughing stock were it matters (around the one way system in town or Maccy D's car park) add to that the percieved safety of a Horizon is likely to be in negative numbers on the NCAP results. That will result in not only the kid not wanting the car but also the parents not wanting their offspring to drive a car which was designed when they were kids. A Horizon, has limited appeal, say had it been an Escort or Mini of the same age then it might have stood a chance. What boils my piss is that the car was needlessly scrapped. A real waste - but it might be worth chasing them up - the car could still be intact in some scrappy.

My Charmant went from a long-term old man owner to his grandson, who must have had it for a year or so. He then sold it onto a guy at his work who (if I recall) wanted something to drive to work in instead of his Integra Type-R, but conscious of the fact that winter was drawing in he sold it to me as I made it very clear that I was interested in it. Happy ending, wonder how much street cred the young lad had? Not much I suspect.

I doubt it, it was scrapped a few months ago I think, when the price was high and everything was straight on the slow boat to China. I was livid when I found out, the car was mint, it was even a nice colour! Would have got £300 on eBay easily I reckon, even with the inevitable mis-spelled CAPS LOCK style advert.

I think a fair amount of youngsters do like older cars... Many of course do only want to drive Saxo's & shit but I think the advent of Retro-rides et al are all helping to redress this trend. Two guys I know of had old Beetles as their first cars... yeah I know those aren't perhaps the best examples, but young folk often think my old Accord looks cool... And I agree!Only today my better half was speaking to a 19 year old lass who drives an 11 year old Civic (my first car was 10 years old & it seemed really old at the time!) & who genuinely loves all older Japanese cars. Her male friend has a Civic too & they seem obsessed by them!

Its 19 years since I passed my test. (Shit, how did that happen?! I thought I was still a lad)I had a 5 year old mini that I bought (for knockdown price) from my dad who realised he didn't need so many cars anymore.I had the newest shiniest car of all the late night car park goons. :roll:My best mate had a 1300 Dolomite, for which he paid £30 on the understanding that he collected it from the ditch where its previous owner had left it.Other mates had Avengers, a few escorts, a couple of shoveitts, a HA van and a GSA borrowed from an uncle 8) (actually, at the time we thought it was a heap of shit). One guy used his mums 1986 Cavalier 1.6L - OOOh how we were jealous!Another guy, a couple of years older than us came from a family of shop owners, and drove around in a Renault 25 Turbo. Everybody thought he was a c*** though!I have just realised the utter irrelevance of this post, but it was nice to reminisce.

I haven't really been driving that lon, I passed my test in '99 when I was 17. First car i drove was my old dears 84 fezza 950, then I inherited my grandads 71 beetle, and used that. It was a bit crap on fuel after the fiesta though, so I bought an 85 mini. It's carried on like that really, newest car i've owned was a 97 Mazda 323F V6 when it was 6 years old, i now use a 93 MX6 daily, and have a whole herd of old shite to keep me entertained.

Don't get me wrong though, some new cars are great, i just object paying a premium to have that 'status'. If there's one i fancy, i'll buy it when i can afford it :)

Was I a "cruel father?"... I'll leave you lot to decide.. My daughter was taught to drive by me and passed 1st time. I gave her her 1st car, which was a Lada Riva I had picked up for £25. She LOVED it!! After I sold it to a couple of girl journalists, who drove it to Gambia for charity (I ought to have had them sponsor my mechanical skills....) she made do with one of the last FSO 125p saloons still running in the UK. It must have given her the "odd car bug" as she now drives a "M" reg Mini Cooper (that's a British one, NOT that BMW pish...)Andrew353w

I passed my test not long ago in 2004 at 17, my first car a gold k10 nissan micra that used to belong to my mum, this car had no street cred what so ever  Most of my mates at the time when at 6th form had hand me downs from parents/grandparents/older brothers so kanckered Novas, renault 5s, and lots of mk3 fiestas. I remember a Few people got brought new cars by parents, it was these brand new saxos etc that got crashed and writen off after a few weeks driving. I purchased my toledo when i was 18 my choice of vehcle now was definalty helped by retro-rides and retro cars mag.

aye. i'm a trade union steward (shut your faces :) )doing a TUC course at blackpool tech. i like to turn up a tad early, park up the monster, roll up a fag and wait for the corsa / clio gang to turn up, doing the best they can do knacker their suspension on the speedbumps. The odd bits drop off here and there - you know, nowt you wouldn't miss, just wheel trims... headlamps... wings. one lad runs in on a proper MOD harley davidson. he nearly lost his pilioned mate on the speedbump once.in fact, i'm tempted to reverse the landy in and operate a small stall trading the bits that have dropped off back to the kids.there is one young lad with a Talbot Sunbeam - i shit you not - in blue and he's well chuffed with his boxy old shite next to all the streamlined crapboxes. stands out well, i have to say.
