I'm after a new stereo for my car

It has to have aux-in as I find FM transmitters a nightmare - especially mine, which helpfully cuts out when there's a quiet moment in the song

It has to sync with the Peugeot's steering column remote control

Something gaudy, silver and with 200,000 tiny buttons is a no-no

Some new speakers would be helpful too, any suggestions on that front?

i got a Sony Xplod stereo great too brought it 3 years ago costing 200 notes, plays CD's as normal or burn on PC as albums and play up to however many songs you can get onto the disc, so normally 10 or so albums (depending on sizes) have to admit i love my music, my system in the Mk1 Scirocco consisted of 6cm in front doors, 7cm in the rear quarters, parcel shelf has 6 speakers 2x7cm, 2x 10cm, 2x10", then 2x15" subs in the boot, sounded great not for loudness (and that it was) but for quality, cant wait to get it into the transit

a couple of years ago from Aldi. It plays standard or MP3 CDs, as well as tunes from SD cards (about 150 at 192Kbps on a £3 1Gb card). There's also a USB input for memory sticks/MP3 players so you don't need a transmitter. There are also slightly dearer variants that include Bluetooth handsfree.

It is without doubt the best £40 I ever spent on In Shite Entertainment.

If the factory stereo has a CD changer facility it shouldn't be too hard to wire a 3.5mm jack into it. If you want something that looks as if it's meant to be there that might be your best option. You are unlikely to find an aftermarket stereo that will work with the remote without an interface, that will probably cost you about £40. I had one on the Xantia and gave up on it because it was too temperamental. You can buy Pioneer speaker kits that are designed to be a direct replacement for the factory ones. Again that's probably the way to go if you want something that looks meant.

i've got the aldi one too, can't fault it realy i think it was £34 and sound great. They look a bit gaudy, but it doesnt bother me as i fitted it in the glove box so you can see it any way.

The steering wheel remote condition you put in there will be the stumbling block... a few do it with adaptors, but the adaptors are always 30-40 quid or more. Sony Xplod and Alpine are the ones most compatible with manufacturers remote controls.A cheaper way, if you need a remote, is to get one with an infra-red remote in the box, they usually have a little bit of velcro to attach it to the wheel.

I've got a Nakamichi MP3 cd player I picked up on fleabay a year or two ago. Recommend highly, but probably a bit expensive for dropping into an old shitter.Lucky buy that, someone had given it to the chap and because he'd not heard of Nakamichi he put it on Ebay unopened with the line...."NEVER HEARD OF THE MAKE, WANT A KENWOOD INSTEAD"....Probably the fastest I've ever hit the BIN button.

Gah, I hate the 'if I haven't heard of it, it must be shit' mentality.I get the same attitude from people when I tell them the brand of my camera, because it's quite specialist
