Fiat Multipla diesel will definitely start - for sale!

Hello.

Perhaps somebody can help. There is a 1.9 JTD Multipla sitting around here that needs shifting. The battery went flat a while back, and in an attempt to move it we disconnected the battery to get a charger on the terminals. Hooking it all back up results in a big fat NOTHING. Checking the handbook there is a helpful page explaining the proper, longwinded procedure for disconnecting a battery which naturally was not followed in any way, shape or form. There is no explanation of what to do should you ignore this procedure.

The car will not start, there is obviously some sort of immobiliser error or something that kicks in when you take the battery off without following the instructions. Anybody have an idea of what can be done about this, if anything?

Please only reply in words of less than three syllables using non-technical language. Thanks.

In unrelated news, does anyone want to buy a diesel Mult for spears/repars? it will be CHEAPO.

cheers!

A car requiring a "procedure" to have its battery removed has forfeited its right to exist.

Anyway, the only way to disarm the immobiliser is via the remote key fob, does that work?

If not, it's 50 quid and ten minutes for a car locksmith to remove that anti theft shit once and for all.

Guess how I know.

I'd suggest visiting more specialised Fiat fora.  From my experiences with Fiat group products, if the immobiliser shits itself you need the red key to have any chance of resetting it.

That's one thing I can say for the Mondeo - it may be dreadful modern toss in most ways, but at least it can take having its battery earth lead yanked off without crapping itself.  The "reset" procedure seems to consist in reconnecting the battery and then pressing the "unlock" button on the remote until it responds.

I think the Multipla is too new for the red key bollocks, a way to check is to look at the key blade and see if it has a triangle pointing into a circle with a 2 next to it. If it does, that's the newer Code 2 system. Surprised that it has  "shutdown" procedure, think I've had the battery off just by the yank technique on all of my Fiats with no issues.

I like Multiplas. I think they look cool and are fairly practical.

I have nothing of use to add re: weird battery thingy.............

However, nothing on a Fiat forum relates to any magical process for fitting a battery, wazz it on, bolt up and away you go.

Check wiring shite near battery? Change fob battery?

I don't really know, sorry.

Sounds like a good old fashioned knackered battery....

Good point - is it worth trying with a known-good battery instead?

Pretty sure I swapped the battery out when we had a JTD Multiplop. As I recall there was lots of embarrassing alarm sounding during the process (maybe that's what the 'removal procedure' is trying to help avoid?), but no issues getting the car to work afterwards. I guess it might depend on how old/new the car is - ours was an early frog-face, the process might have changed after that.

Aye, it's a breaker really due to some rust on the rear sprung hangers, but it's worth more than the scrap man will give for it in bits so that's not really an option. Shame really, as it's a really nice, cool car that drives excellently. I like it a lot but it's time for it to die.

I'll be well embarrassed if it's just a goosed battery, but I'll try and find a known good one (lol) and lob that on. It was months ago we tried to start it and I can't remember what happened, but pretty sure there was a warning message on the dash or something. Updates in due course.

Not quite so ugly any more?  Perhaps time has been kind when Peugeot and others have been offering us grim efforts for the past 15 years.  And just look at that Juke!

Missus likes our Multipla, I does too

Does need a good battery though, the JTD

If you do end up breaking it I'll buy the interior door handles and scratchy dash bits if not too grim

We won't be breaking it here but selling it off whole to somebody who will (or maybe fix it). The plastics are a bit grotty, not the worst I've seen but not great. Door handles I think are all right though.

I've put the battery booster on just now, we'll see what happens later on

Read something about a battery condition monitor attached to the negative battery lead somewhere. Apparently can become disconnected if the battery is removed. Non starting results. May be bollocks of course, but was on a Fiat forum, so possible.
