Mother Womble is making noises about swapping the Polo for an Up!

Personally I think its a duff move, her 8-year-old Polo has done just 25K miles and looks like it just came out of the showroom, trouble is she wants something smaller. Being diesel (1.9) she fills it up once every three months these days too.

Anyone any idea truthfully or real worldly what the pez Up does to the gallon, I really cant see the point in her buying a diesel if she insists she wants to swap. Im considering buying the Polo if she does sell as its got heated leather - yum yum.

consider your options re; being disinherited, if you tell her to go with the UP - 'up on the low-loader'... I was behind a brand new one with just UP on the plates; bout 2 years ago - gave out some non-visible but very noxious fumes before eventually grinding to a halt; I presume it was a dealer's test drive as there was 4 folk in it - this was on a narrow road with no hard shoulder - I just watched while it was pushed into the nearest gap.... before we all got round the thing...

the mpg figures are vastly over exaggerated BTW, about the only UPside to these is that these will be 'ultra auto shite' in a few years, due to how actually shit they are....

They can't be any worse than those Stupid cars...can they? Seats like park benches...bog-flusher shifting...impossible to fix...

The Up! is brilliant. You get more for your money with a Hyundai i10 (which is also brilliant) but if it must be a Vee-Dub I don't think she'd regret swapping her Polo.

Can't help with real-life MPG but it'll be impressive unless it gets ragged everywhere.

Fatha Carlo has had a Skoda Citigo for a couple of years which I've driven a few times.

I think it's an impressive car in so many ways, completely ruined by its engine.  Nice size, good seats, visibilty, lovely steering, quite comfortable and a very good gearchange.  But the engine is noisy and completely gutless.  I would have thought the point of having a petrol these days is to enjoy the fact they're smooth and quiet, unlike diesels.  This one sounds just like a diesel, without the economy, although he reckons he gets 50mpg out of it.  To me a perfect small car would be something small and light like this with a nice pokey petrol, like the 1.2 TSI unit, but of course if you want performance in your 'small' cars now you have to buy bigger heavier things which make my 405 look small.

None of which would probably bother Mother Womble mind.

I'm still reeling from the idea of a Polo with heated leather.

I had a Skoda Citigo (same as an Up) as a loaner for a day when they were new out.  It was ok: small, unrefined basic transport, lively enough around town but noisy at speed.  It reminded me very much of my original 1984 Polo C Formel E breadvan (no relation).  This made me smile because I'm a shiter, but probably wouldn't have if I'd just spent whatever they cost new on it.

I'd consider a recent used Fabia as an alternative.  I don't know if they're actually any smaller than 8 year old Polos, but if you tell her it is then that might amount to the same thing.

They are small, very small, which is great if that's what's needed. Interior is cheap and nasty with painted metal on show, and the front seats of the one I was in had integrated headrests, not even GM had thought of penny pinching to that extent. Made my Panda look and feel plush when I got back in it, but will attract the OMG GERMAN ENGINEERING VAGTAX.

They're mega overrated IMO, less than claimed MPG figures will be because they're a cylinder short of a proper engine and need thrashing to get above town speeds. And it sounds shit.

The chap I bought my Mueller APV from has a Ferret. He brought it down into the town for Armed Forces Day, and scared the shit out of motorists on the way, being as he was accompanied by 2 Op Banner-spec Land Rovers. His is a 50's vintage one (sans turret) but the later (Saviem?) diesel engine I think. A mad looking thing.

If she does 25k or fewer miles in eight years, then what importance does the bloody OMGMPG have?
She could do that with an 8.2 litre Cadillac and it wouldn't leave her poor, so my suggestion is to swap that ruddy Polo for a '71 Eldorado floppytop.
Well, obviously she prefers to spend a shitload of Shekels to save a few litres of godforsaken diesel, so despite I'm right, as always, I will be ignored.

God I'd love a Ferret. No pulling out in front of me, no 'I'm not going to back up' shite. Perfect for the mean streets of Norf London.

I suggest a Caterpillar D16 instead of a Ferret in that there area. Make sure it's fitted with a Bosch pump, though.

The Out-laws traded an MG TF (1 owner40,000 miles FSH) for an Up!, they got £575 for the Kettle. Didn't tell me,because "we didn't think it was your sort of thing"

Mother-in -law won't drive the Up! prefers her old Lupo, claims the Lupo's 'nippier' whatever that means. Whenever they come round it's always in the 12 year old Lupo and the Up! Sits in the garage, my devious kids are working out how to nab it off her.

What does it cost? Price

Target Price £8,587 - £24,795 !

Seriously, what does she use it for, if it's just shortish trips around town diesel is unlikely to be a good idea with all the cack they put on them these days.

Does she cart other old biddies about, if so the 5 door is probably a better idea. The small Hyundai, Kia, Citroen, Toyota city cars will be a bit cheaper, if she's looking to keep it a few years then some of those will have a nice long warranty, if that's a concern. My Alto is a dirt cheap new car and after over 40k miles in under two years it's been fine and does about 60mpg

I had a Hertz Mii for a week, it was a thoroughly dull drive but not much worse than a Lupo to be honest.

Fuel economy was underwhelming. It was a petrol engine with an Ecomotion badge on the boot, stop-start etc. It returned 50mpg over 600ish miles of mixed driving, which is no better than a 1-litre Lupo.

Verdict : Tell her to keep the Polo !

I'm still reeling from the idea of a Polo with heated leather.

I'll tell you what its bloody brilliant - last time I drove it with the heaters on was on the day Fatha-Womble died, it wasnt hanging about either as I toed it down the M55 trying to get to the hospice in time ( I didnt).

Ive driven it since but not needed the heaters. Fatha Womble went for leather "because he hadnt had proper leather in a car since his Seven" and it was a special order option at the time - cost £1800 ish with the winter pack "because its too wide for the garage so has to live outside all year round".

He even spunked £300 on some "paint protection" package that sounds to me like a posh wash and wax.

Some useful and frank advice chaps as ever - personally I think she would be daft to swap it.

However if the i10 is good enough for Miss Nixon
