This week I have been mostly....

Welding and painting a totally worthless 1997 Nissan Almera 1.6 SRi

My mother bought this back in 2000 when it was quite new fangled

She is really fond of it and like a fool I offered to sort all the rust on but as we know, behind every scab is pain...

post-19511-0-79753200-1436647852_thumb.jpgpost-19511-0-67244000-1436648026_thumb.jpg

Got a bit carried away with the cutting out rust bit...

All painted now but when I tried to get it out it wouldn`t start. It would start briefly, rev up fine and then cut out. Bollocks I thought as I had forgotten to disconnect the battery and I`ve fried something, probably ECU.

Checked everything I could then got disheartened and left it alone for a day or so.

Went in garage after this time to get something and noticed mum`s key hanging on a hook. In the ignition was a key for a Nissan Micra I own which looks identical and obviously is identical other than the chip.. Put correct key in and car is now fine.

So a happy ending sort of..... I didn`t have time to finish the other side so I will be having it back to finish it off as she needs it for the weekend and refuses to drive anything else. Welding done, just need to finish painting.

Forgot to take photos of the finished shiny project as I was in a rush due to the key issue.

Determined not to have to weld this again so I have drilled some holes and filled every cavity with an oil / diesel mix then a bit of waxoyl mixed with some used cooking oil. If its welded again it will burn. ( keep following this thread... )

More stupidity next week I`m sure......

I`m quite fond of it too to be honest. It just never goes wrong.  I remember when she bought it, it felt so solid and well built, and it still feels the same now. Used to find it dull but its so reliable it has endeared itself to me.

At some point she will need an automatic and this will join my shite fleet. I couldn`t see it scrapped

They are the tranportation choice of lifes winners. I've stuck 50k on my 1.4 and virtually nothing has gone wrong. The things that have broken have been both peanuts to replace and a complete doddle to do.

SWMBO who is very much in the 'if its not new its shit and a liability' camp even likes it, and willingly gave up her (less reliable) modern to have the Nissan back recently when i acquired Vantman's Saab.

Brilliant little cars and well worth saving.

Such a shame these things rot for fun.

Is anyone else thinking the SRi deserves more than a 1.6?

Did they do a GTi with the Bo110x-friendly 2.0, or did I dream that?

GTi has the SR20DE, yeah.

Back in the day, my mate spent about £30K modifying his Phase 2 GTi!

As you may or may not know, my trusty Scenic died a while back and a crunchy but FSH Xantia turned up that I decided to fix and run.

Hadn`t got round to it but my heart had decided on a Xantia but this particular one didn`t quite do it for me as it was silver and also the facelifted ones aren`t as pretty

Oh and I bought this one last week. This I have plenty of love for. Very early SX TD with rare body kit, very well cared for with original plates, dealer stickers and radio

Serviced it today, changed LHM and rear spherespost-19511-0-49034200-1437766579_thumb.jpg

I shall be ditching those poxy OZ wheels and putting some VSX alloys on I have lying about

The only issue is, I changed the rear spheres as they were hard but now it is way softer than the front. Can`t decide if the fronts are on their way out or if its because I have fitted spheres off a later model ( 1998 )

I haven`t driven a Xantia for a year, and that was my old R plate estate. It been at least ten years since I have driven one this old so hard to say what it should be like!

I`ll change the fronts anyway and see what happens

Don't know who stripped it but it looks like it was done in a rush ☺

I've actually owned this for a couple of years but due to being stored at a friends house and having too many cars its been forgotten about

Sold my Merc w123, Niva and Tercel and decided to keep this one as its from an era of cars I like best

Trailered it home today where I hope to get all the major work done over winter, as if it isn't at home in my garage it won't get done

Interior totally knackered including a rotten dashboard but I bought interior to go in

Will update regularly if anyone interested,post-19511-0-01217700-1447446760_thumb.jpgpost-19511-0-12162400-1447446788_thumb.jpgpost-19511-0-09789700-1447446816_thumb.jpg

Despite the plate it is a 1958 mk1, not sure of its history

Bought it off a Granada mk2 fixated chap who really ought to be on here, he also had a Polo that was made of so many different cars he was considering making a harlequin replica

MOAR WULZY TAILS please!   Always fancied one of these if ever I have to get back down to one car.   FDB's right about that badge too - should be driven round in a light mist with just that and the sidelamps lit for maximum 1950s Britain atmosphere

Bought half shares Riley 1500 with a mate years ago, same colour, we used it for motor club autotests, sold the plate for what we paid for the car and then scrapped it. It was bloody quick down the bypass but had trouble putting the power down onto wet grass.

Thanks for your comments!

Can't think of any parts I need just yet, going to concentrate on welding for the time being

It did drive quite well when I bought it, but the brakes have gone since being layed up

Least of its worries though...

Good job I have a mig and not afraid to use it..☺
