I think they drive better than a Riva. Handling's not too bad as long as you don't go stupid and they feel solid and safe on the road. OK they're not the most refined car in existence and the switches feel like they're about to break off every time you use them, but they're not actively unpleasant to drive in the way that, say, a Lada Samara is.
