Topless: Saab Convertible Sold!

Well this Saab is now officially For Sale, as the roof won't go down.  A motor whirrs away behind me but there's no movement.  What we have then, is effectively a pillarless coupe.  Unfortunately I already have one of those, built for the purpose.

I think it's lovely and always did, but it obviously needs the roof mech looking at and by the time that's sorted, it'll be July and time for MoT.  And I have no money to spare for what might be a big job.  Therefore I think it'll be better-served by moving it on again, to someone who perhaps can deal with stuff.

There are minor niggles of course.  The instrument lighting has a mind of it's own and the power mirrors don't work.  Neither does the remote locking, or the passenger's door from the actual doorlock, but turning the key in the driver's door opens both so that's ok.  The interior is looking rough: if I get a suitable afternoon this week I might give it a clean-out but I won't be attempting to do anything with the wonky glove box lid, or the worn and tired seats.

Dave said that in the 18 months or so he's had it, he's had some of the scuffs painted in, replaced the front coil springs and the cam cover gaskets which were leaking oil.  OSF tyre looks a little low, I should be able to pump that up; but I seem to remember it always looked low anyway.

Where am I?  Barrow-in-Furness, LA13; bottom-left corner of the Lake District.

Shiter price £375.

Eddy, are these roofs hydraulic / electric?

If they are, it may be worth checking the fluid level. I mentioned the non working roof to a lad at work who has a Merc convertible, and his reply was 'check the hydraulic fluid'.

I confess to knowing nothing about these though.

Unofrtunatly these are electric. The 9-3's that replaced them (and the Classic 900's before) are hydraulic.

Obviously Saab realised that the motors were a bad idea, and caused more trouble than they are worth :)

I would have guessed electric, simply because of the way the motor spins behind me.  I haven't made any attempt to look, even just to work out where the motor sits.  I have no intention of so doing.  Whoever ends up with it is buying a project, unless they want to live with it as a coupe.  It's a perfectly good coupe; except I already have a better one.

I am happy to confirm I have taken custody of this fine Swedish floppy top, we (me and Our Lass) had a fantastic day out collectioneering from Eddy in the South Lakes, which involved a scenic drive from leeds, a visit to the Lakeland Motor Museum, topped off with the finest hospitality a shiter could hope for from a seller, including buns and pies and coffee :-D

Due to my chinese phone's inability to save photos, and my further shiteness to fix it, pictures are going to take a while to purloin from Our lass, but I will start a new thread detailing my progress, and no doubt picking the hive mind about future issues which will need addressing the more I bugger about *improving that which those Saab engineers failed to deal with in 1994 :-P:-D

  • 7 months later...

I promised you a Roffle and here it is.

1994 Saab 900 Convertible, 2.5V6 auto, previously owned by several Shiters, not to mention my late mate Dave, and now mine for the third time.  Loads of MoT, roof isn't working (but is up so at least you won't get soaked), instrument lights work when they feel like it, but old enough for Classic insurance and entry to shows.  Goes like stink and actually isn't all that thirsty.  For a skindiver, it's a total bargain!  I'll even throw in some multi-award-winning pies.

To answer your question: I don't know.  I tried it the other day and it did nothing.  Djimbob might have a better idea as he's had it through what passed for summer, so might have tried to fix it.
