I'm afraid a new job means that i'll have to part company with my lovely* Rover 214SLI. It has history as it has been a regular featured car in the Staff Car Sagas section of Practical Classics Magazine, and it's also late of the Sam Glover hangar of automotive achievement (Rover Group, subsection B).

It's Nightfire red complimented by patches of rust and go-faster lacquer peel. If you like shite, this is guaranteed to get your neighbours aroused.

Good points:

Utterly shite.

Uprated head gasket / cam belt / top end rebuild by PC Tech Editor Sam Glover in 2010.

Pro-fitted Multipoint LPG conversion (tank in boot) - I get approx 300 miles from £25 of gas (i pay 63.9p per litre - it's cheaper elsewhere)

Four brand new Yokohama Blu Earth Eco-tyres (done less than 1000 miles - so I might swap them to another car, depending on sale price)

MOT November 10, 2015

New ignition system - plugs, leads, coil, rotor arm, dizzy cap

New coolant temp sensor x 2

It's not a BMW.

Bad Points:

Utterly shite.

Brakes squeak like billy-o - will need a service / clean at least

Uses some oil, but i do cover 600+ motorway miles per week, so that may have something to do with it.

Suspected inlet manifold gasket leak (sucking noise on acceleration - new £3.50 gasket supplied - haven't had chance to fit it yet)

Fan temp sensor failed last week - it's araldited into the radiator (thanks Mr Glover) so cannot be removed and replaced. I've gangstered in a temporary manual dash switch to avoid boil ups - long term solution would either be a new radiator or one of those temp sensors that fit in the top hose.

Occasionally runs rough (but cleaning the plugs solves this, probably an LPG / lean running thang)

Never been washed / interior a disgrace / generally filthy.

Central locking motor has failed on drivers door.

It's a bit shit.

Passenger side front hubcap in passenger side foot well (needs to be cable tied on - but i like the gypsy look)

Probably some other stuff too.

Not sure on price so offers invited, take a punt - i need it gone as it's on the company insurance policy: i won't be able to drive it / have it on the road or leave it taxed after Friday 19 June. I do have off-road parking to store it on if needs be, but if it's my name still on the log book by June 19 and beyond i won't let it on the road for test drives etc as it's not worth the ANPR grief.

LOCATION: Coventry, or if before June 19, Peterborough, Cambs possibly.

Grab yourself a bargain - and laugh about sticking it to the tax man every time you gas it up - it never ceases to make me smile. Bastards.

Peace and love,

Neil

PS: email me on neilincov@gmail.com if interested as probably won't be looking on here too much as i have a bleep load of work to get finished in the next week...

Yes, well it belonged to Sam Glover's Aunt, and as his parent's ran a LPG conversion company the job was done to keep the family rolling along at maximum revs, and minimum notes. It's been done very well - even the MoT tester commented on the under car pipe routing efficiency / beauty. Plus the welding to the sills is top class so there should be little to fear come testing time*

It's also got brand new headlamp assemblies. I forgot about that. The Rain X on the windscreen also comes at no extra charge. Someone must need a cheap, very cheap to run, runabout / commuting weapon? Plus yes, it does now qualify for classic insurance and the tax is 120 odd quid a year or something, so not too bad.

*absolutely not a guarantee.

May I be the first to say "WhoTF LPGs a 214?!"

A 220 maybe, but a 1.4 on gas is top flight mingebaggery. Good work.

I know a British Airways Captain who for many years only ran a Scenic 1.4 for his wife and an LPG'd 25 1.4 for himself.

Naturally the 25 grenaded so he replaced it with a £300 last-generation Renault Espace which he also converted to LPG. He was tighter than two coats of paint though.

Sadly, the tyres aren't worth much now as they're now 'part worn' so probably £20 a corner at the very most. You may be better off lobbing some cheap brands on with half decent tread depth, if you have any.

I would love to buy thisand try and make it as economical as possible by making it very light and aerodynamic with wheel spats and an early bonnet. The wedge shape has to be fairly slippery already no? Like a slightly square fish.

Sadly I'm 9,000 miles away and already own 3 cars. Also various other excuses. I do, however, like the colour but even so, I'm out.
