pompei
Acquired today as a stop-gap until I start my job in the new year. First impressions v favourable! I read somewhere that they were never popular, hence v cheap secondhand, due to "image problems" - which makes it even more attractive to me ... Torsten2001
It's a Volvo I've never had! I would imagine that they are great cars and nothing to worry about mechanically! Ridiculously low prices though!
bigstraight6
Good choice pompei, image aside, it will be a dependable smoker making more sense than most of its contemporaries....
pandamonium
Just sold one of those, lovely cars , go forever but boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!reasonably quick if you can get the 1.8SE version, plenty low down torque.
pompei
I can't help feeling a little chuffed - 75000, full history, all the electric toys work, and drives well- all for 300 notes.Even Beloved, a dyed in the wool new car fan, is impressed. In fact so much so, that she wants a Porsche 924/944 (I know there's no logical connection)
r.welfare
Late model 440s like that seem excellent value to me, but I can't rid myself of the memories of the early (H-reg) 1.7 GL I had, which was awful! This was back in 1999, I paid £900 for it as I recall when Parker's reckoned it was worth over £2,000 ( - a fool and his money, etc etc)...mind you mine was boggo spec, no PAS so bloody heavy to drive and it rattled like buggery - the early ones got a real pasting from the press for their crap build quality.Anyway I can't remember anything else about it as I sold it to my brother after 2 days and went back to my Prelude! £300 is a good price for something with low k's and FSH really, and you can't lose that much when you sell. As a late model, I should imagine it's pretty viceless. Car Mechanics featured it in their 'Cars To Keep Forever' series, so they must be OK. Even the mini-850 front end suits it.I was going to recommend you to get a 405 TD, but even non-MOT'd wrecks are going for over £200 on the Bay at the moment... Volksy
I think these are cool, I have had a 480 Turbo before, which went like a rocket, and is the same floorpan and engine i think..although you may need to change your names to Kev and Bev.. Mat.T
One of my uni house mates likes these, main reason being they are cheaper for a 21 year old to insure than a 1.0 micra! They seem very dull, but as cheap depandable transport you cant go wrong.
r.welfare
Small Ovlovs have always been cheap to insure, despite panels costing a packet. I had a 1.4 340 as my first car, insurance group 5 as I recall. RWD fun (honest) for less insurance cost than anything other than the 1-litre town tots. pandamonium
RWD fun (honest)I know, had a 1.4 myself, only slid in the wet tho.
r.welfare
Stick some 360GLT alloys and decent Pirellis on and they don't slide at all!
reallyloud
hmmm...440's seem to be coming out of the woodwork. They are excellent value, and the Dutch made 400 series seem to have the same longevity as Swedish built Volvos. But I can't get over how harsh the 1.6 engine is in our one. There is a Renault crossover here isn't there? If it wasn't for the notchy gearbox and ponderous handling I wouldn't mind the car so much. But they have very good seats! Personally i think the 300 series is a far nicer car.
pandamonium
then whats the point???? I can even get my Lada to ( i was gonna say powerslide but that would indicate some sort of power!!) slide if I apply a little throttle in the bends! r.welfare
Obviously I know that now! But once you've executed an unintentional 4-wheel drift across both lanes of the road near Silchester, as a raw 18yr old, big grippy tyres are a plus!Back to 440s. Yep, the lumps are all Renner. I believe the 1.6, 1.8 and 2-litre are similar to those in 19s and 21s, or maybe Lagunas? They also put the 1.9TD in a few. Even cheaper is the 460 but my! That back end is ugly! Prob'ly hugely commodious though. 480 doesn't float my boat. Make mine a Turbo, please.
MrRegieRitmo
Even cheaper is the 460 but my! That back end is ugly! Prob'ly hugely commodious though. Is that the one that looks the same but has a proper boot on it? Like they had a saloon version of the earlier 300 series?
