As I thought might happen, I showed the avensis to father foad who thinks it's great so I said he could have it and I'll have his old Toyota that's been sat in the garage with flat tyres for a year.

Mot is up in December so I'll need to get it in for a test soon but I think it'll suit me a little bit better... 9a87b52ecd7f68e1175889d878a51e8e.jpg

That is a pretty neat old swap there. Win an Avensis for pocket change, swap it for a Camry.

The Camry has been in the family a few years, I swapped a £250 carlton estate for it.

I had given my dad a 306 td sedan to use as a runabout when he didn't have his company car but found he preferred the Camry so swapped for the 306.

He's had the Camry for the last couple of years, rarely uses it and I pull it out of the garage to do some work and mot it once a year.

The avensis might get a bit more use because its a bit more modern and provides better fuel economy than a 3.0 v6 auto.

Camry 1 - foad 0
Tried to get the Camry out of the garage yesterday afternoon but battery was dead and brakes were seized.
Stuck a new battery on, it fired up but when trying to reverse, the rear wheels were locked up and the car wanted to slide diagonally back which became a bit of an issue because the car barely fits in the garage and every attempt at reversing ended up with rear quarter almost scraping the side of the garage.
The throttle cable also managed to get jammed so the car started revving its tits off so with it getting dark and not getting anywhere decided to leave it for another day.
The condition of the car looks to have deteriorated since I last saw it, there's a few rusty stains starting to appear which are really noticeable on a white car.
I think when I get it out of the garage I will put it into use, get it tested and then decide its fate.
Are 3.0 v6 Camrys worth anything? I know the engines are sought after for mr2 conversions but I wouldn't have thought there was a huge demand for the cars.

  • 2 weeks later...

With the Polo and Camry selling this week, I had a bit of spare cash sitting so when I saw an old W123 Coupe pop up for sale on facebook 5 minutes away I went along for a look.

I took it for a quick test drive, it seemed to drive fine so I bought it. The seller is still waiting on the documents coming from Ireland, I'm not clued up on importing a car from Ireland so might need some help with it. It was originally a UK car and was exported to Ireland a few years ago.

My w123 saloon died during the week, it seemed to be stuttering slightly at higher revs occasionally but when returning home from work during the week it died completely. It would restart briefly but only run for a couple of seconds before dying. I ordered a new fuel filter and fuel pump. I changed the filter yesterday, the old one was full of black shit.

With the new filter in it seemed like it was going to run but it maybe just fired for a couple of seconds longer so I thought I'd change the pump as well.

The pipework split when trying to remove the fuel pump so it's looking like I'll need to replace the pipes before I can replace the pump.

That's if I can find the relevant pipes, couldn't see any on eBay.

In other news, Mrs foad was driving the Proton home from work when she noticed some loud knocking coming from the rear end. One of the rear shock mounts had ripped clean off so I had to spend a bit of time making a new bracket for it and welding it on. It was only then when I discovered a huge rust hole behind where the shock mount was meant to sit so I had to remove the rear seats and weld a big patch in from the inside.

It's all fixed now, I didn't have time to take any photos.

I do like a C123 Coupe. The 280 Twin cam has about 185 bhp and they hustle along okay with the 4 speed auto. The throttle linkage on these is pure comedy, Heath Von Robinsohn. 'How many rods, levers, bell cranks and ball joints can we fit?"

BMW just used a cable. :-)

They rot like a bastard but the engineering is much nicer than the Granite W124. Nice colour as well. Has it got leather?

That is pure pornography.

W123 coupes are one of my favourites, my ideal fleet would be a W123 coupe, saloon and estate.

You are 2/3 of the way to my dream fleet, you lucky duck.

I wanted a 123 coupe for years, but by the time I’d had enough of my Citroen c5 they were out of reach price wise for a good daily car, so I bought the 124.

Are you comfortable sharing what you paid? I was under the impression they were worth 'actual money' these days but I suppose so are VW Polos to the right person.

I've always been a bit ambivalent about W123s. I think just because they are still such a common sight compared to most cars of similar age, and the totally baseless feelings I have towards German cars in general.

However, recently I have begun to see the appeal of a W123 as a sensible-but-old daily driver. If they're as well made as people say I think I could live with the bland looks and presumably dull driving experience. I'd really like an early four door in that muddy green that looks like a bathroom suite/ 1970s BL colour, preferably fitted with the round headlamps (with yellow bulbs, of course), with brown interior and in lhd purely to be cussed.

I'd settle for that coupe, though...

I paid £1k for it having sold The polo the day before for £900 so essentially I swapped a mk2 Polo and £100 for the Mercedes, that's how I'm going to think about it because buying a car with no paperwork that still needs imported for £1k makes me feel a little bit uneasy...

It is relatively solid, there's a couple of scabby bits on the rear arches but other than that it looks pretty decent. It starts up and drives fine but the handling felt a bit vague and there's a bit of a drone from a front wheel bearing. I think the brakes are also binding all round so a new set of calipers are probably required too.

I like that very much. The 280 is definitely the one to have.

230E auto IMO. They're a lot better on fuel and a good one is a remarkably quiet car to whistle along at 80-90. The 250 is hopeless but the black top 230E engine from 80/81 is very good if maintained properly.

Happy to report that it isn't all that rusty, there's a couple of bits on the rear arches but everywhere underneath is solid.

I love that. Not generally a Mercedes fan.

I like the old vans, obviously, but never been too bothered by their cars, except the 190, good looking car.

Bargain!

As for the fuel lines etc, tried asking Mercedes themselves?

I keep being surprised at A: what they have in stock and B: them being sensibly priced.

It's the first major carmaker who seem to actually take pride in looking after owners of their older models.

Brake pads and the centre bearing carrier for my van were *cheaper* than eBay.

Do you know the UK reg mark it had before export to Eire? That's what it should get back after taxing it, also if it has a current roadworthiness certificate from another EU country isn't there something that says you can get it U.K. registered with no need for an MOT first? The Cats/Dollywobbler Dacia went through that process if I mind right.
