Classic Gear

Recommended Posts

Just been flicking through a TV "industry" style mag called "Broadcast" which 'er indoors just brought home, and lo and behold came across this, and I'll type in out ...

"Men and Motors orders first show in two years

Men and Motors' first original comission for two years is a series dubbed "Top Gear for classic cars". Presented by Jason Dawe, Chris Searle and Alice Crocker, the 10 x 60-minute Classic Gear will be produced by Bristol Film Studios and will air from next month."

I'm not sure what to make of all that. On paper sounds a cross between a really promising show and a toe-curling twaddlevision disaster.

Chris Searle? He was last on the box presenting That's Life wanne?

And Jason Dawe (shakes head in utter despair)

Can this Alison Crocker save the day?

Upon further investigation, other sources say this programme is already on air. Am I well behind the times? Also it has Penny Mallory teaming up with Dawes gracing our presence once again. The Guardian adds:

"Classic Gear will include tips on buying classic vehicles as well as test drives of famous cars such as the 1974 Ford Gran Torino, which featured in Starsky and Hutch, and the Austin Allegro, which was recently voted the worst car ever produced. A James Bond special will also pit the Aston Martin DB5 made famous by 1964's Goldfinger against the DBS from 2008's Quantum Of Solace. Dawe said the show would be a "celebration of some of the greatest cars ever made".Phil Barry, the managing director of Bristol Film Studios, the independent producer making Classic Gear, added that it would "bring a fresh approach to the subject of classic cars" in order to appeal to a younger audience. The Men & Motors channel editor, Ingrid Stone, who commissioned the show, added: "Classic Gear is a great addition to the Men & Motors programme portfolio. In this time of financial worries, the team prove that a little bit of frugal thinking can still get you your dream classic automobile."The show is the first original commission for Men & Motors since Brazen, which featured amateur pranks, was ordered three years ago.Men and Motors, which is part of the ITV digital channel portfolio, targets young men with a programming diet of laddish lifestyle and motoring."

Did anybody see on M&M over the festive period the "100 Greatest Cars" (or something like that!)? I saw the first instalment, think it was going to fall into 4 parts but not sure when the next chapter is, I've probably missed it although I think it was only on once a week. It seemed to have a genuine mix of vehicles from Supercars to more humble things & I found what I saw to be quite interesting. It was presented by John Inverdale of all people, he of sports programmes normally!

Presented by Jason Dawe,

Chris Searle? He was last on the box presenting That's Life wanne?I'm sure I saw him doing a classic car thing the other day in an Aston DB4? wasn't paying full attention but I think it was his own car and he did his own spannering, so may know his stuff.

If anyone remembers the "Barn finds" auction in Suffolk last summer, Chris Searle was there wandering around with a film crew.Maybe this is where the film will appear.

Me and 500tops are 2 different people. (he has the red 2cv avatar) I dont know him, but ought to appologise for unwitingly hijackng his name. You are quite right about the stuff available for a ton these days. I've had a few..'92 Sierra Laser 1.8 £100 - Lasted 4 hours.'96 Rover100 diesel £50 - Used 6 months and sold for healthy profit.'95 Rover 600ti £100 - Lasted 8 days.'91 Citroen AXGT £100 - Out of mot, but still in the fleet. The metro and the AX needed a bit of work, but were both great cars in their own way.Lately I've had to spend anything up tp £350!Now a £500 budget? Just think of the shite I could buy...........Anyway, thanks for the interest - back to the topic

OK got in now, Just saw 500tops comment on another thread so sorry for the mistaken identity. Round here (Westish London) went from being able to get a shoddy but usable motor for £100-150 to nothing under £500 in about 3 months.

Same up here in Leeds, was falling over £200 motors a while back, now you can't get much at all.. Plus people seem to be deluded that the price of Scrap is still high..

No guys please not Mike friggin Brewer I would gladly squash prat flat with my truck and reverse up just to make sure, if he appears on my tv the channel changes immediately, if you haddent noticed I don't like him :roll:

Every time I see him doing his buying routine I thing that's why people put 'no dealers' on ads. Love it when they phone up and ask what will you take for it? You then ask what is it about the car that makes you think it is worth less than the asking price, they respond I don't know I haven't seen it - and you never will goodbye.

And another thing with Mike 'Hence' Brewer on Wheeler Dealers, Ed's time, workshop overheads and sundries etc are never added to the calculation. They also leave off the MOT charge half the time. Just an advert for Teng tools, Ed could do that on his own.

Apologies in advance as I realise this isn't the most constructive post I've ever made on here, but I feel the need to get this off my chest. Brewer is an A-grade tool. Edd is cool though, I agree he should have his own show without the handicap of Mikey boy dragging the spectacle down with his truly irritating mock-enthusiasm and chimp-like mechanical abilities.

The thing that surprises me most about Mike Brewer is that he actually is in the car trade and has (had?) a used car lot, God knows how he turns a profit. When he fixes up cars on Wheeler Dealers loads of the budget gets spent on irrelevant tat - quoted it before but if you haven't seen it, get on Youtube and check out the MX5 episode. Fair play fixing the leaky roof and A-pillar grot, not sure about getting a new interior from a breaker car at quite hefty cost (the old one was a bit damp but could have been cleaned up) but when he started splashing out on new wheels/tyres and buying a load of chrome bits from an MX5 specialist I couldn't believe it. Not just a waste of money, but limiting its appeal as the bulk of buyers would probably want one that hasn't been messed with.At the end it was shown that they made a reasonable profit, but I doubt that happened.

He always looks so smug with himself when he thinks he has mugged one of his mates off for spares. I knows its all set up but you'd think he would have the sense to come out of not looking like a total dick

It amazes me that he doesn't have enough self respect to turn around to the producers and say 'Look I've been buying and selling cars for years, stop making me look like such a twunt with this fucking awful set up, scripted shit'.Or something like that.

I'm far from the biggest Mike Brewer fan, but atleast he gets enthusiastic about stuff, and does seem to be into old cars - even if he doesnt know all the ins and outs.I've seen bits of Classic Gear, I thought it was ok. You cant expect that much from MM can you? I dont mind Jason Dawe either, I watched a 'Used Car Roadshow' episode the other day and he seemed a reasonable bloke. They were at Bourne Classic Car show and he was talking positively about older cars and the like....Although I dont particularly like or dislike him now, when Richard Hammond used to be on various MM programs I thought he was a prick.

The only TG presenter still capable of a decent car review is James May. When he puts his mind to it, he does a very good 'old top gear esq' review. I hope the other 2 dont drag him down to their level anymore.
