The applicant will be required to work with the Tier 1 Engineering supplier and JLR subject matter experts to tune the software parameters within the Stability Control System and Driveline Control Systems in such a way as to optimize the stability performance of the vehicle in all operating conditions as defined by the performance targets applicable to the specific vehicle project. Lead the tuning of Stability Control Systems from FDJ through to J1 sign off. Subjectively and objectively assess vehicle stability performance in a repeatable, safe manner. Use vehicle based instrumentation to gather on-vehicle data. Use software tools such as MM6, Canalyser, Canape, Matlab, Simulink and CarMaker to gather data on system performance. Use gathered data alongside subjective evaluation to identify parameter changes to drive the desired change in system and vehicle performance for all SCS hosted functions and eDiff/IDD Systems. Work with simulation tools to identify parameter changes. Work closely with the Tier 1 supplier based abroad to determine parameter changes. Work closely with Off Road Capability, Dynamics and other attribute teams to manage attribute trade-offs and meet vehicle targets. Liaise with Vehicle Engineering and Programme teams during the development process.

Skills Required:

High level driving skills at and beyond the adhesion limit in a range of high and low mu test environments. Analysis of vehicle handling characteristics during a driving manoeuvre. In depth knowledge of vehicle dynamics. In depth knowledge of SCS systems and calibration. Appropriate knowledge of: control theory, electronics and electrical systems, modelling tools and techniques and vehicle networking. Knowledge of measurement and instrumentation systems (such as CANalyser, CANape, Matlab, Simulink). PC literate (Excel), with good communication skills. Systematic problem solving. Candidates must be committed, flexible and able to work under pressure and beyond normal working hours when required. Must be able to work with people at all levels within JLR and interface with suppliers.

Experience will typically including extended test sessions at the Nurburgring, wet handling tracks and low mu winter testing on an ice lake test facility. A minimum of 5 years spent tuning Stability Control Systems (also known as ESP) for a major motor manufacturer or Stability Control System supplier as an application engineer. A minimum of 5 years working with either Continental Teves or Bosch Stability Control Systems. A proven ability to assess vehicle dynamic behaviour. A proven ability to use CAN based tools and measurement analysis tools.

Experience Preferred:

A proven track record in an automotive development or system application role. Modelling and Simulation experience using Matlab, Simulink and CarMaker.

Education Required:

Driver training qualifications from industry recognized training providers which encompasses race track, development driving and low mu test activities( i.e. JLR class 4PG or equivalent)

Education Preferred:

Degree in Automotive, Motor Sport or mechanical or electrical engineering. Nurburgring industry pool training completion via Joe Weber driving school.

Working at JLR as a chassis engineer means in some ways you are applying to be the spiritual successor to Bob Knight. The 'skills' description would be familiar to him but the rest less so. Getting 'in' these days must be very different.

"High level driving skills at and beyond the adhesion limit in a range of high and low mu test environments"

And:

"Appropriate knowledge of: control theory, electronics and electrical systems, modelling tools and techniques and vehicle networking. Knowledge of measurement and instrumentation systems (such as CANalyser, CANape, Matlab, Simulink)."

Surely can't be describing one individual?

In the olden days you had a man who could drive really well and some other men who would make adjustments and do clever maths and make everything excellent.

Personally I don't think I'd buy a car whose chassis had been designed by a software analyst. Which presumably means I'll never buy a car again.

Maybe they have been looking in on Pistonheads...

They ought to put this job up at our local Post Sorting Office, where I believe they insist on some Grand Prix experience to drive one of their battered vans. I'm sure there would've several candidates who have experience to exploiting the upper echelons of the vans dynamic capability.

I consider myself to be well educated, but I have no fucking idea what they actaully want in that advert.

I know what a Mu receptor is though and I can prescribe a shit load of opiates that will adhere to it... Or naloxone which will adhere to it a whole lot more strongly, but for not as long.

Can I have ajob driving Landrovers fast?

And if you have absolutely none of those skills or qualifications you could always do the same job for Vauxhall

Thats not even funny, i once worked at Millbrook as a test driver in the late 90's all i had to do was turn up and drive the thing, write down my thoughts at the end of the shift, job done...... None of this degree in this and that..

When you read a lot of car reviews they almost all say how great the car is. You never read an article where someone says how dreadful something is, you could read a test on say a Hyundai Getz, and the praise would be gushing. No one would have it out and say 'this is shit, just utter shit. I can't think of any redeeming features of this car whatsoever'
