CUNTS

However I have genuinely watched banger racing and smashed a Piano (really, you wouldn't believe how hard it is!!!)

At a summer show I have seen an event where the local rugby club smash a piano so small that it fits through a foot square hole, looked like bloody hard work. Not sure if this was a one off or an annual even.

Decided not to attend this, due to building one engine out of two, to help a 42 year old Land Rover run again. It's by no means a minter, but the owner likes it, and it's going to last another 40 years. I reckon this site is not about preservation, but the celebration of the mediocre and downright plain motor vehicle, and the "anti-establishment" ideals of wasting 400 quid a month on a modern Eurobox that loses more value each month than your bank releases to the hire purchase firm that owns it. Let's be honest, some cars ARE past redemption, and deserve to be crushed to prevent a death, but let's also not forget that pefectly usable and rare vehicles being thrashed to death and crushed is NOT entertainment for anyone with at least HALF a brain. It's an age old argument between users of this site, and the amount of cars that are around now, that were about when I was growing up, are virtually nil. All you see are high end cars, Mercs, BMWs, Rollers etc, that cost a bomb back then, and cost more now. I prefer to see Mk2 Escorts, Marinas, Fiat 131 etc, than all this modern shit. There's no character left any more, and we are throwing away our chance to "preserve" these cars, whether absolute minter Ex Sid n Doris Beige Acclaims, or a barried up Capri with a Zender bodykit, thats been flashed over in Crown plus 2 by a blind man in a sandstorm. I like to see them all, warts and all. I just hate to see waste. Why buy a new car, when a 25 year old banger will do to get you to work 4 miles each way. There's car parks full of loaded luxury motors,, that will be replaced at 2 years old, because the colour is so "last year", and it than gets passed away from the dealer network and becomes unmaintained and unloved, and trashed. I waited 22 years to buy the car of my teenage dreams. A W126 S-class Merecedes in Silver. It was thirsty, difficult to park, and heavy on tyres and brakes. But I loved it. Had it not been "desirable", it would have expired and been crushed long ago. I dread to think what fate will become it as it becomes uneconomical for the current owner to maintain. Death at the hands of a banger racer? Possibly not, as it's injected, and it weighs a lot so is worth more on the 'bridge............. Let's sort this out soon guys, we all love crap/boring/bollocksed cars, most of us prefer to see them alive and kicking, but get a hoot out of seeing them hemmed in by trees and sheds, never to turn a wheel again. Others like to see them dragged out of hedges and coaxed into "pacemaker" style life, and splatted against other vehicles in the name of fun. I see both sides, but I go with preservation, rather than destruction. Just imagine, the Bluebird you race next week, could be the Bugatti Atlantique worth 6 million in 50 years. OK maybe not, but think about it!

I do enjoy reading the endless war between factions when it comes to banger racing..............personally if its yours, do what you want, but do we have to have an event that openly antagonises the opposition ?? and then have to have them condone their actions by exagerating their innocence?I personally have had cars stolen and bangered as have some of my mates...............if you wish to not be tarred with the same brush, surely you should clean up your "sport" and on the other side, maybe we should remember that if the racers are willing to pay their money then its upto them what they do with it...................even if its a good car desrtoyed. To me the problem will never be solved until there is nothing left to race

^^^ Excellent post with very valid points as already suggested.I see the matter from both sides of the fence too... I'm on the 'I'd rather see an expired car languishing in a garden for ever more side'.One of my cars is returning to nature & I find it fascinating in a weird sort of a way. The fact that it was bought in 1991, reliably drove many miles & was reluctantly taken off the road 10 years ago because of rust, yet it still lives today to tell its story. There's receipts & old tax discs in the glove box, the odd scratch & dent & my recollection of when the bits of damage occured over the years. All these little things would have be wiped out if the car had been scrapped or raced yonks ago. Instead it's like a personal museum piece, causing no harm to anyone, causing no pollution (from the environmental point of view its actually the opposite as I use it as a parts source for one of my other cars). However, the rust is now so advanced everywhere that I'll need to think about letting it go whilst its still able to sit on its four wheels. Thus ending the story.
