A Tale of Two Rovers - Return of the Rover

I beat my personal best time from Liverpool > Dover in one of these, a 56 plate facelift job.

It was comfy, effortless and economical. Quiet, too.

If the clutch slave cylinder hadn't gone splat on the way home it would have been excellent.

So after a mild bout of 'Rover Envy' of a certain green example, I have acquired some new mats for mine. Actually I purchased them some time ago but hadn't got round to doing anything with them. They're original Rover Group Aubergine mats to fit the Aubergine personal line interior. So they're the wrong mats for the wrong interior but I don't care. I hated the cream mats that came with the car as they always looked so grubby, and I think these work reasonably well with the car being red.

Eggplant floor mats match the piping on the seats: RESULT.

They sell cheap transparent plastic floor mats, which I like to put over a good set of mats to keep them clean. If I need to make the car presentable in a hurry I can just lob 'em in the trunk. Muddy footprints on floor mats like those would be quite a shame. The drawback is they don't have much gription, so they do slide around a bit, but you can just fold them up slightly and lift all* the dirt out of the car.

Well chaps. No FTP but the next best thing. After I had the autobox fluid changed I detected a slight hesitation between 30-40mph when accelerating, which has gradually got worse to the point where it's now slipping out of gear and generally pissing about.

It's now at the garage and waiting to hear, so place your bets now! Is it:

  • A: Incorrect fluid level after the change
  • B: Solenoid playing silly buggers
  • C: Complete and utter gearbox DOOM because no matter how much money I chuck at my cars they never fucking appreciate it

A

You have to have the gearbox at a certain, narrow, temp range on these to do the job properly I recall.

That seems to be the consensus on the owners' club too. I'd like to think that's all it is, but the garage who did it are a well renowned MGR specialist :/ And the guy really seems to know his stuff after chatting to him.

UPDATE.

Many years ago (2011) in a land far far away (Yorkshire) I bought a Rover 45 1.8 for £300 on eBay. '53 reg, Impression S3 spec with heated leather and hondatastic interior and just 40,000 miles and history from new. It needed a head gasket which I did. Then it ate its PG1 gearbox (poor repair before meaning it lost all its fluid). So I found a good replacement and had it swapped. Then I bought a 75 and sort of lost interest - so my Dad has been running it for the past 4 and a half years. It's been perfectly reliable since then requiring only an exhaust mid section, some brakes and droplinks. Anyway, more on this later.

Bob the 75's autobox has definitely failed. Before I dropped it off it was flaring when changing gear, slipping under acceleration and generally being a pissflap. After some thought I have decided it's probably best to spend ££££ on it, because I'm mostly a bit strange. This leaves me with no vehicular conveyance in the meantime which is rather inconvenient. For the first time in several years I have relied on buses which, to be quite frank, has been bloody awful! All the drivers appear to be grumpy sods, all the buses seem to have knackered gearboxes and knocky suspensions, and they manage to turn a 15 minute journey into an hours slog. So enough of that thank you very much.

Right now, as we speak, there is a certain Rover 45 winging its way in convoy with a Vauxhall Meriva down the M18 towards the M1. In approximately 3-4 hours it shall be sat on my drive on stand-in duties for the 75. I'm quite excited about it as I've not driven it for about 3 years and apparently it is on top form right now.

Here is a picture of Bob the 75, Harold the 45 and my brother's Punto which all ended up int he same place sometime last year:

I bought this blind on ebay for £300 in 2011, had a lot of work done to it including a proper head gasket job, new gearbox & then lost interest due to another ebay purchase of my first 75. So my Dad sort of adopted this as his own car rather than sharing with my Mum! He's looked after it very well, and he's even had some bodywork done to it in the last 6 months. Two weeks ago it had droplinks, trackrod ends, tyres and alignment. It drives a lot better than I remember it, and the 1.8 K series works really well in a car this size / weight. A lot better than in a 75!

Newsflash...

Bob is home & My wallet is £2000 lighter. Drives bloody nicely though! The gearbox rebuild came in under budget, so while I had alternative transport got Mr Rover Repairer to do some of the other bits on the to do list. He's had an interim service with all filters & the engine mount done as well which has reduced vibration in the cabin drastically. Just got a cracked rear spring to do before the MOT now and we should be all good :)

Mr Rover Repairer seems to know his stuff - he's certainly got enough 75s lined up waiting to be collected!

Basically the gearbox was all a bit mangled. I've been shown various internal bits and bobs today with obvious bits mangled / butchered as well as a big cog wheel thing that had a fracture in it. So it was a full autobox rebuild at a specialist, which came to £1690, and the rest was the servicing odds and sods.

Well that was short lived.

Driving home this evening, 2/3rds of the way home. ABS fault. Lovely. At least it's a common issue and relatively* cheap to fix.

*When compared to epic gearbox borkage, other incidents & failures available, while stock lasts, no cash alternative.

My 75 seems to be developing a touch of 'the Renaults'.

Had that ABS error the other week, then the other day it blew an indicator and headlamp bulb on the same day. Today I started the car and it flashed up 'Engine Disabled', after a spirited drive through the Chilterns I concluded that it very much wasn't disabled.

Quick google shows a few people with submerged ECUs with similar symptoms, but mine is bone dry. I suspect my battery may be beginning to get tired. Can't blame it - it is Rover branded so that's at least 11 years old?

Well no more funny errors of late which has coincided with the weather warming up. I reckon the battery is to blame and won't make it to next winter.

Got a noisy suspension. Again. Think I might bite the bullet and go for a complete suspension rebuild. Already done the gearbox - might as well do the whole job properly.

Rover is still rovering in a excellent sort of fashion. Nothing else to report. It needs a wash.

I posted in the Model thread about a load of Corgi busses I picked up on a local market here the other day. I've now had time to go through and catalogue them all with pictures. So I thought I'd share them here rather than clog up the model thread further:

The atlantean is my favourite. I might have bought a stablemate for it in Hull Corporation Livery too!
