pogweasel
http://retrorides.proboards86.com/index ... read=52059 With a not unamusing tale of woe attached. Personally I think that he'd be better off keeping the car and permanantly binning the woman. And that's not just a blokey thing, Mrs_Pog agreed with me, but then I've had her driving big dizzlaz for quite some time now.
Richard
I suspect there was more going wrong in the relationship than that.It seems to sit awfully high, especially at the back. It looks like a Xantia set to high.
retrogeezer
Someone should tell her that hearses are usually black....
r.welfare
£250 isn't a bad price for one of these with that length of MOT/tax and low mileage. That's what I paid for my multicoloured 250k mile GLDT wagon this time last year - albeit when the price of scrap was a little higher than today.Mine sits like that at the back - when unloaded - and the rear radius arm bearings are A-OK; I think that kind of ride height is pretty normal in a 405 wagon TBH. Not sure about the mismatch in colour on the offside rear door, and the roof rails aren't a standard fit on the GLDT, otherwise it looks OK to me - Caramac interior and all! But I'd be wanting to know more about the "slow heater" - could well be HGF as the thermostats on these tend to shut open, not closed, when they go. Timewaster
Mr Welfare, should I be worried about the everso slow warm up of my TD?I always believed thermostats were designed to fail open....But I've been wrong before! That RR 405 for £250 looks bargainalicious, beige too. retrogeezer
Gotta say that the interior looks a nice place to be on that 405....Eastbourne though, as usual it couldn't be further away from me..
r.welfare
Mr Tontops, if you let the 405TD just idle from cold it will take approx. 4 decades to reach a temperature that would make the rad fans kick in. I reckon that it takes both of mine approx. 10 miles and 15min (at A-road speeds) to reach thermostat opening temp, from a cold start. 'Cos it's a diesel (and an old-tech one at that) it does take a while to get up to temp.Provided the heater kicks out volcanic air on the hottest setting from the centre vents (I always close mine 'cos I don't like to arrive at work like I've been in a sauna!) and the temp gauge stays at around 79-85C when it's fully warmed up, it's fine. Oh, and it doesn't lose any water of course - there shouldn't be any excessive pressure when you open the rad cap 10min after a drive. Check the date stamp on your radiator on the top - if it's more than 10 years old it's probably best to get a new one as a matter of course. The XUD9TE is a GR8 engine but does need it's cooling system to be in top order - good rad, rad cap, water pump, thermostat, and the cooling system properly flushed, changed and bled (quite easy when you know how to do it) every 2 years - to run and run and run. Don't cane it from cold either, I keep it under 2500rpm until it's fully warm, although that's no hardship given the torque at low revs.I reckon my moved-on multicoloured wagon was the only one I've had that displayed possible head gasket failure - I could never get any meaningful heat out of the heater, it lost about a litre of coolant every 100 miles and the temp gauge used to lots of weird things, i.e. come up from cold OK then drop to zero for ages before then jumping up to 100, coming back down to 80 then back to zero, etc. I lobbed some K-Seal in then sold it to a German lady who drove it to Morocco, she e-mailed me a few weeks back to say she'd had the water pump done and it was driving A1 through the souks so maybe it was OK after all...405 seats are probably the most comfortable I have resided in, RG, except (possibly) for those in a Volvo 740 - I did 25k in a Saab 9-3 in 11 months before the 405s too and they weren't as comfy! That said, the low-spec seats in a GL aren't quite as comfy as those in the higher-spec models, (with stronger side bolsters) which are even better - if I can find a cheap Exec/Mi16 leather interior for my saloon it will be going in! Talbot
If that didn't have the (fairly rare) frankly horrid fawn dashboard, I'd have that in a shot.Ride height simply says that the rear torsion bars aren't knackered, and yes, the heater can take a little while to warm up on these.Worrying stain in the boot though. r.welfare
Some industrial-strength carpet cleaner should shift that - once these things got old they tend to get used as vans and hence get stained load areas. I've got a spiffy fibreglass load tray - with a big embossed Peugeot lion logo - in mine. Shame they never colour co-ordinated the parcel shelf though - they are dark blue whatever the body/seat colour.I've only ever seen the fawn dash in tandem with that golden body colour - makes you wonder why they bothered tooling up for it, pretty sure it's the only alternative to the black dash I have in both of mine.Anyway, looks like it has sold so, if the cooling system isn't borked and the cambelt has been done recently, someone has got a bit of a billy bargain there. Milford Cubicle
Hey I want one of those load trays, any idea where I can acquire one?Wish I'd kept the one out of my previous
r.welfare
eBay be your friend - I got mine for 99p...mind you, a big rubber mat might be better, as you have to take the load tray out if you want to fold the seats.
Milford Cubicle
It's more to use it as a glorified pick-up than anything.
