doobietoo
Bought this today. Yeah yeah i hear you say its just a mystic blue golf mk3....Nothing special what's it doing here maybe an interior pic will help... This i think is a lowly L spec.Keep fit windows, and mirrors, no sunroof radio cassette all on a 1996 car !!! and a 1.4 engine putting out a heady 60bhp I think it will fit in just fine. On the plus side its only done just over 100,000 miles and has a pretty good history. The panels are pretty straight too. It does need a good polish though as it has the usual vw blue oxidation. wuvvum
I had one of those. It was proper basic - 4-speed 'box and everything. Wasn't as sluggish as I'd feared though.
Lacquer Peel
You could get a Mk3 Golf with a 4 speed 'box?!

r.welfare
1.4 Mk3 Golfs were definitely 4spd to start with, the tight bastards. My wife had one of those when we first met and for a good few years afterwards, we all know ALL GOLFS IZ CRAP M8 but it was dead reliable and not really that rusty when we sold it at 11 years old with about 150k on the clock. dieselassist
this being a late 1.4, possibly has the AEX engine code; multipoint injection type; the stem oil seals seem to fail regular n douse the 02 sensor in oil, breathers can also mayo up... The earlier ABD 1.4s are 'more durable' being the last incarnation of the mk2 style small engine... looks fairly 'fresh' - with these base mk3 golfs its fairley easy to tell one 'shagged to bit' - it'll drive all sloppy, loose gearchange etc.. I had 4 or 5 of these throughout the years, even an estate version in 1.4 (with the roofrails - MEGA!!) as they are mega cheap here, as are the bits to keep em going... Enjoy the sheer banality!! Pillock
I was going to say I've got some parts for that - but not sure that an electric sunroof motor, couple of GTI arch trims, and a rev counter clock set are necessary. And I put the airbag in the bin (hope the bin lorry doesnt try and crush it or anything) doobietoo

Luxxo Waftybarger
I had one, no power steering, 4 speed, tape etc. Strongest arms I've ever had. I drove it as hard as I could try to kill it. Finally something belt like snapped and I rejoiced.
They_all_do_that_sir
These are probably the last true volkswagons before they went ALLVAGIZSHIT a golf used to be the reliable, sensible solid choice.
Pete-M
I resurrected one of these a few years ago for a friend who needed cheap wheels. It was free but needed wheel bearings, brakes, lower arms, oils, plugs, filters. Cam was knocking its plums off but it made it through the MOT after a day's work. Three years of abuse with liberal servicing and it just made it through another MOT. Needed a couple of plates and rear shocks - the owner builds café racer CX500s in her living room, and regularly shifts donor bikes etc in the Golf. Camshaft is still knocking itself to bits and it just scraped through the emissions this time, but it ain't dead yet.

Captain Mainwaring
I like it. Nothing wrong with a nice Mk3, especially one as basic and no-bullshit as that.Plus, in my eyes at least, much less associated with cunts than subsequent Golfs. (apart from the scene lot). Junkman
a golf used to be the reliable, sensible solid choice. That's exactly what they never were. They always were overpriced dangerously flimsy tosh with neither handling nor brakesand had loads of cheap rubbish in them that broke a lot and was expensive to replace. At least they aren't Vauxhalls though, so I guess all is well. HillmanImp
You could get a Mk3 Golf with a 4 speed 'box?! Even my 87 Scirocco had 5 gears, even if the 5th one was called 'E'.
spike60
For a few days I had a miserable Jetta Formuel(?) E which had 3+E. It was so gutless it couldn't pull E, meaning 3 speed. 1985?

Always overpriced, I thought (some) handling and brakes began to appear around the time they started making them out of bits which routinely fail - in the days of no brakes and little suspension they did have a reputation for being more reliable than most. Which probably wasn't very difficult. I know of one which broke its MAF sensor (regular occurrence for VW group cars apparently), which in turn took out the DMF. Since the 'wishbone' bushes were more than a year old, they went in sympathy too. I was surprised the oil pump didn't pack up, just to finish the thing off.
