MULTICOLOUR

That sounds like camouflage to me (more reason for twats in BMWs to pull out on you)

1998? Was it re-registered or something?

I0m sure there's some sort of cake you can get like that with pink icing on the top.

What you really need is some sort of flash colour scheme that will enable the old bill to follow you through traffic, if only to point and laugh.

Chop it in half and nail both ends to some MDF in a Bowenesque style. Then attempt to sell the ends as mgf's through your dealerships

That's totally what I'm thinking at the moment. Definitely into 10" steel wheels, and think I'll go for a bit of a back date on the rear lights and grill too.

Very common in the x1/9 world to back date them too- the earlier ones are way prettier. MGB's too..

I'd fix it up to original spec, as a late MPI is a nice thing and it's already a rare sight to see one that hasn't been Sportpacked/had Mk1 lights grafted on/crashed through "Bolt on Bitz" show stand.

That's just me though, I can totally get where you're coming from.

It looks a lot more worthwhile in that garage pic than the dumped pic at the start. Looks like an excellent opportunity to learn to weld, with the bonus of all the panels/repair sections easily available. Somehow I don't imagine that will be the case with an X/19.

Once it's all straight and solid it's up to you how to spec/colour it, after all it would have been a scrapper otherwise.

Out of interest why gasless? Is that so you can use it outside?

I've been welding Mig and Oxy Acetylene for nearly twenty years.. and I cannot get a proper weld with gasless wire.

As above, an MPi  (or twin-point) Mini is about as good as they got re. daily drives.

They had the looooongest final drive (2.76:1) so can do motorway speeds at sensible revs and lots of sound deadening.  The difference between this and even an 80s model is very noticeable.

10" wheels look great but you'll need to downsize your front discs so the wheels physically fit.  This is expensive as you'll want a 60s Cooper S setup which, arguably isn't as good as the 8.4" stuff you currently have.

I'd just get it legal, get rid of the PINK and rag it about.  You'll most likely even make money on it when it's time to sell.

That's what I've got, because whilst a little pissed at a party, I got talking to a mate of my Brother in Law who was into Land Rovers, and I ended up agreeing to buy it for £35 .

It's just a low powered clarks hobby welder I have, that retails about £150, but it does the job.

I've used it on the sills of a cavalier, and got a decent weld.  It means I don't have to worry about making sure I have enough gas.

This is the type of encouragement I need. I know this is a stupid question, but I've got a bit of leave to take. My parents have got a garage up in that there Dumfries.

My pal sent me an exhaustive list of stuff he reckons it needs, he's very thorough though:

Inner/Outer sills

Front floors

Rear floor patches

Inner/outer a panels

Boot floor

Boot closing panel

Rear valance

Door skins

Door steps

Panel under scuttle/window surround rotten, maybe pass MOT though?

Subframe mounting kits both ends

Front ball joints

Drivers window mechanism

Rear brake kit

Front calipers

Brake lines

Rear subframe

Set of engine sensors

Engine mounts/ steadies

Brake servo

4 New tyres

Bumpers

N/s headlamp

Code reader

Grease gun

Mig welder

Cone spring compressor

Say I take 2 weeks off and spend 80 hours and a grand on it, is that even close to what it'll take? Welding looks really hard and suddenly that list looks very long.

Sadly, the newer a Mini is, the worse the body is likely to be :(

The MPi cars had thinner metal than before and in some areas no paint at all.  I don't just mean, no top coat, I mean no paint whatsoever, just bare metal.  Rover really did have a cheek knocking these things out for £10k+....

Anyway, it would appear to need all the 'usual' areas.  Don't kid yourself, that is a major project.  People say Minis are simple bodily; this isn't strictly true.  If the outer sills are shot, the inners will be too.  If they are gone, the floors will be rotten.  This then spreads to the bulkhead, heelboard and, well, everywhere else!!!  The problem is, every panel is spotwelded to its neighbour.. and sometimes this can mean a seam that is three panels thick.  Damp gets in and causes mayhem.

Of course, literally everything is available new, but a 'shell that needs all this is easily a 6-month weldathon if you want it done properly.

With all that in mind, I recommend you buy it immediately and get cracking :D

You won't do it in 2 weeks - forget that idea. Especially if you can't weld yet.

Because of the value of Minis and the availability of panels, though, if you have the cash and somewhere dry to do it then I'd recommend the replacement panel route. It's much easier that way.
