Does anyone know a classic car insurance company who will insure my L reg Renault Safrane V6??,its 15 in Jan,so i think its able to be insured but who can provide cover,it does very few miles(under a 1000 a year)and is garaged, but normal insure is costly at the moment, forget Footman James already with them with the Triumph and they say no go!!!

Why is the 'regular' insurance costly? And are the benefits of classic insurance worth it?I've my 20 year old BMW insured on a normal policy... if I put it on a classic policy, my NCB would vanish into the mists and I'd be jiggered trying to get it back should I need a normal car again, plus it's actually cheaper to pay direct line to cover me to a level much greater than I probably need than to go through one of these classic deals - last one I tried came out at £400-odd, whcih is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Classic car insurance does have one huge advantage, in that most policies are agreed value, if you state it's worth ex, you pay the premium, and x is what you get back if it's written off. Your Renault would orobably be worth about £400 as a write off with a normal insurer, but if you agree a value of, say, £2000, that's waht you get back. They usually want photos etc though. Just "googled" your query, the AA does classic car insurance for stuff over 15 years old.....

That's the real pain with classic policies. My R30 is with Budget - best deal I could find - cheaper than the classic specialists and I'm earning NCB on it.

I hate Budget, I'm with them and they give great first quotes, however when you change your car it's always cheaper to take out a new policy with them than change vehicles with your existing underwriter.

What they didn't tell me was, despite being insured by them for 3 years, as I changed my car a number of times, and to avoid the high change of premium and exorbitant cancellation charges (e.g. downsizing from a '98 Saab 9-3 2.0i to a '00 Fiat Shitcento 1.1, there was actually an increase in my existing premium!) they convinced me to take out a new 12 month policy each time -

"No Sir, if you take a new policy with us there are no cancellation charges, and its half the cost"

that I haven't built up any no claims in this time as none of the underwriters insured me for a full 12 months..

Guess I'm just stupid...

No - I guess I am for not asking about this when I took out the policy - I was planning to switch my policy to another vehicle soon. Didn't know about this. Thanks Volksy - as I'm near the end of this policy then perhaps I'll hold off on the change and shop around for the next one.All useful info for Mr Turbo though.

I checked out Direct Line for cover on the Vel Satis and they quoted me nearly £900!! I think it'll be going on my trade policy along with everything else

Heritage Quote (Norton) have covered my 405 estate which is 15yrs old on a classic policy - they were the only "big" classic insurance player I could find that covered something that's old enough but is not a classic, and I would have thought a Safrane fits the same profile. The lack of NCB is a bummer but I have the saloon on a non-classic policy so there's NCB accruing on that.
