Mitsubishi Carisma 1.6 GLX 16 valve 1997

The Old Bloke Next Door

Recommended Posts

Belongs to a mate of mine who has recently retired and doesn't need two cars anymore. He's owned it for some considerable time, its recently had a cam-belt and has always been serviced regularly.

Five door hatch I think, 1597 petrol, manual, mot July 2015, a current tax disc until the end of this month goes with the car. Very straight bodywork, tidy interior, colour silver which has faded. there is some slight rust on the inner edge of the rear wheel arches and the front edge of the bonnet and it needs two front tyres asap.

He wants £200 for it, if anyone's interested I'll take some photo's and get more detail, i.e. number of owners, mileage, anything else relevant that a prospective buyer may want know. Its located in Hednesford, Staffordshire WS12.

This is what it looks like, not the actual car.

Just under the last post on a thread that you've started is a little button that says, "Topic moderation" - this should give you the option of deleting the one you want.

Tried that but got a message saying I do not have permission to delete. However its gone now.

No it doesn't.

I'll edit the tax disk text, it will remain in the holder on the windscreen.

Can I be the first to say "more like LACK OF charisma, am I right?"

Yes indeed and his other car is a Nissan Almera.

I had a T reg Carisma GDI which I bought  for Taxi work from 2002-2005, the upholstery was the most disgusting pattern I have ever seen and actually improved in appearance after a late night passenger was unwell on it but to be honest the car itself was no more boring or lacklustre than anything else that was being used at the time, in fact it felt quite quick and enjoyable to drive, although I should point out that it replaced a Montego so I wasn't exactly familiar with cutting edge technology of the time.

Hard to see how you could go far wrong at £200

Had a look, drive and spoke to the owner today. First off when I posted this the owner was on holiday, I was told by another mate of his that he was selling it and the cam  belt had been changed recently, turns out it was changed about two years/10000 miles ago.

He's owned it for about eleven years, bought from a main agent at about 60000 miles. Two advisories on last mot, the front number plate and a nail in the drivers side rear tyre, which hasn't gone down, although best to budget for three tyres, size 175/65 R 14.

It hadn't been run for a month, engine started up on  first attempt and sounds sweet, I drove it for about two miles, go's well and quite comfortable. Electric roof, windows and mirrors, everything works except the boot lock no longer works off the remote, has to be locked, unlocked with the key. There is only one key and fob, can't find the other one, will have a look but it may not turn up.He says it never uses any oil, water or any other fluids and has always been reliable.

The body looks very good, flat paint, a bit of rust on the bonnet and a few scabs, the rear archs need a wire brush, bit of underseal, a rattle can and cut and polish will smarten it up.

Interior  quite tidy, main defect is the front headlining on the sunroof needs gluing back into place. It has a Sony stereo with a ten cd interchanger in the boot.

The owners manual, all old mot's and various bills come with the car.

Overall, I would rate this as a very good buy, any trial/ inspection within reason, price £200 firm.

If anyone wants any more detail, just ask, anyway some pics of the actual car.

No, fuel guage on empty as well, it's just not the bargain it seemed at first.

The owner says it averages over 30mpg local and reckons it should manage about 20 miles on what's in the tank. There is a petrol station about two miles away, ideal for fuel fill up photo.

I'm almost tempted to buy it myself.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a local AS member agree to buy it subject to insurance, but the premium he was quoted was prohibitive, so no deal. There was one other enquiry which I had  put on hold, however  he bought something else closer to his location.

While this was ongoing my daughters Focus developed an occasional starter  fault, which on inspection is wear on the starter ring.

Added to the other  defects it has, I will end up sending it to the bridge when the mot expires, that's if it lasts that long.

Anyway, the Carisma now has a new home with me as  back-up Shite.

Not much of a collection thread because it only half a mile from my house. Ist I filled a can with £5 petrol, not a very good  petrol station picture.

Then I drove to my mates house where our VW resides. Its got a slow puncture that I might get round to fixing one day.

Left my Volvo there and head backtowards home to collect the Mitsu.

petrol added to Mitsu.

Then onto my yard and parked up until I can find time to have a better look at it.
