12 month Direct Debit Pay Monthly Car Tax..

Sorry for another fooking tax thread

Can you cancel it mid way through?

The 735i is due tax at start of November- if I do the 12 monthly payment option, can I then sorn it once the MOT runs out in Dec?

Would it be a case of changing to a Sorn?

The mandate on the back of the reminder has the standard Direct Debit Guarantee, so I can cancel the payment- its just how I'd move it to sorn?

Cheers

I've been wanting to SORN the Stellar, in order to free up some short term cash tied up in the tax disc (I can always tax it monthly if I want to use it) but the option on the website still only lets me declare it SORN from the beginning of October. I've had to wait until today to do it to make full use of October, but I need to make sure I do it before midnight otherwise technically I won't be able to get a refund for the complete month of November!

It would have been handy to have the option to select the SORN start date if I'm being picky, but hey ho, monthly DD will be a big help.

I've just set up the DD for the Felicia for 12 months, as money is fairly tight, it does help budget, and it also meant I didn't have to go to bank of dad to keep the car on the road. A 5% surcharge tbh is worth it, and as a lot of people are feeling the pinch, I bet quite a lot of people do opt for it. It's PAYG motoring in a way.

Same situation here with T2, phoned and chap explained that sorn occurs from the moment you click it, there's no selecting dates either back or forward. Odd, but I guess that's how it works.

I looked at it but decided to pay for all my cars the old way of one 12 month payment. Car tax is a rip off and I refuse to give the robbing bastards a single penny more than I absolutely have to!

I appreciate what you're saying, but a quid a month for the three months I want to tax it vs paying £225 in one hit is a no brainer.

Hmmm, I have a thought. I've just taxed the BX paying monthly, and the first payment will be taken out out on the 18th November. What's to stop me driving around for a few weeks, taxed and legal, then cancelling the direct debit on the 17th?

I 'think' they would be entitled to chase you up for the tax used from 1st to 17th of the month by way of several letters and eventually some stupid court summons. A good idea but probably not worth the ag.

That two week delay (if that's what it's going to be) before the first payment goes is jolly useful. It's almost worth paying the extra 5% for that alone.

I hope they don't close that loophole because people decide to take the piss as Mat described.

Or selling it on the 17th?

Agreed that it's very handy, as a lot of stuff goes out at the end of the month so having a bit of a gap is good. I wasn't going to cancel the DD but I was surprised that you were effectively getting some tax up front - I'd have expected one payment straight away followed by the rest on the usual date.

I think I read they won't let you use a joint account for DD.

The way it reads I think, is that you can't use an account where more than one person has to authorise transactions. Provided that you are authorised (in the eyes of the bank at least!) to spend money from your joint account I think you should be OK.

That's a good question actually. Sorry if I'm teaching you all to suck eggs but from my understanding of working with Direct Debits, if you wanted to cancel it and make sure it's cancelled then you'd have to ring Doovla who will probably be a bit fucked off about it but are obliged to cancel as part of the Direct Debit Agreement. I think it has to be no later than the day before it's due.

Unfortunately your bank can't stop them requesting/receiving a payment as they aren't actually in control of it beyond the basic administration of paying the DVLA when they send a request for money .They can cancel it and it'll appear as cancelled on their system but the DVLA would still be entitled to take the payment unless you tell them it's cancelled, so you'd have to ring them anyway. The really bum deal is that they can request payment for a DD that you've cancelled with the bank twice and leave you with two sets of unpaid Direct Debit charges and unauthorised overdraft bumrape.

A certain large Spanish bank was a real bastard for stuff like that...
