Tartan58
Don't worry this is not one of these "I want a car for free" posts (although that would be nice) In a (not so) bizarre turn of events with the MX5 having failed it's mot due to the dreaded tin worm, I find myself in the position to be able to buy some shite, but I do need it to be a usable daily driver. To be honest it doesn't even need to be shite although that would be nice, it just needs to not be shit. My list of requirements are thus:Decent length of MOTNot outrageous to taxAs economical as possibleReliableSuitable for a 8mile daily commute on dual carriageway over the winter (ie. working heater, not leaking...)and that's about it. I will consider anything up to around £1k although under £500 would be better - I have to try and justify to myself it will work out cheaper than fixing the MX5. What have you got?As I say can be a cheap modern as long as it's not truly awful (mind you I'm kicking myself for missing the boat on a £250 cityrover so maybe I will accept truly awful.) - I have a couple of options in the pipeline but it would be foolish not to ask on here first... eddyramrod
A garage by me has a Volvo 850 estate that's clearly a cheap trade-in, with 500 on the screen... I'm sure they'd negotiate. It's either grey or blue (haven't seen it in daylight!) and M reg. I know exactly nothing else about it, except "here" is Barrow, in what for you will be the furthest possible corner of the Lake District. But the SVM know the way here and would welcome you as a new member...

skattrd
rml2345 was considering shifting his Volvo Estate and he's not too far away. There are trains ya know to go a bit further afield
Tartan58
A Volvo is tempting however I'm really after something a bit smaller and economical as we already have a large estate and space for parking is limited, although the alure of joining the SVM is drawing me in! I'm being an awkward but don't really want to travel too much as working full time and having 4month old twins to look after I don't think my good lady would take to kindly to me disappearing off for a day of shite collection - I consider myself fortunate that I'm even allowed to consider making such a purchase at the moment, I'm only being allowed to indulge in my weird fetish due to the fact that me having a second car for work will mean that she can have the use of the other car through the day. As far as the MX5 goes I knew it was going to need welding but I had a voucher for a £20 MOT so though I might as well put it in and see what it needed - it only failed on the nearside sill (I knew it would) and the offside was the only advisory so will need doing as well really, so I reckon I'd be looking at £600-700+ for a proper repair (if I was doing it I'd want it done properly, new panel etc rather than a patch up) and I don't have the skillz or the time to do it myself. That and the fact that it costs £285 a year in tax means that it's not really cost effective to fix at the moment. Oh and there's the dreaded chassis rails that I'm in denial about as well...otherwise it's perfect! However it's not really worth selling in its current state for what I'd get for it so it will stay SORN'd in the garage until such time as I can afford/have the skillz to get it fixed up. Cavcraft
I've got something that fills all those boxes, except the near to Scotland bit. However, it's so cheap the distance is a mere formality.

garethj
This is even less interesting, and even further from Scotland. However the drive back would cost almost nothing.
