vulgalour
Autoshite, I present to you an impossible challenge. I am in the position of requiring a very small, very basic, very cheap car that is not a basket case to travel distances of no less than 2 miles and no more than 40 miles over the winter months. I've worked out my meagre budget for this, scoured as many adverts as I can and learned I'd rather walk than buy a Corsa. The requirements are:Tax and Test - approximately 2 months of each required at point of purchase. Amendment: 4 months MoT ideally, Tax not so importantEngine size - 1300cc or less, 1000cc or less even betterFuel type - PetrolGearbox - Automatic or manualExtras - none required, not even a radioMust not be a project - so no chronic bum rot, mystery engine rattles, possessed catalytic converters, &c.Must not be a Corsa - sorry, it's not that they're bad, I just find them hatefulMust have at least three wheelsPre-2000 only (although I may go for a '01 or '02 if it's the right car.Within 50 100 miles of Thornaby TS17 - Did some extra checking, can be further away than initially thought Favourite candidate for this so far is the Perodua Nippa, it meets all criteria, is appalling and often incredibly cheap even for a really tidy example. That one in Leeds that I posted in the tat thread was pretty much perfect for this, imagine how annoyed I am for forgetting to put a bid on it in time. Whatever it ends up being I need to get 4-6 months motoring out of it. Budget: £150 I bet you can't do it. EDIT: This is a stupid challenge, I should just walk. eddyramrod
RedSparrow
Hmm, you might get an old Fiesta that'll fit the bill. For £150 it'll be bloody rusty but might get you through the winter if it's got some ticket left.

If you need a winter hack to run for six months on such a tight budget, dont go saddling yourself with something that runs out of MOT within that period. The test fee and maybe a failure on a balljoint or two, wipers and a CV boot (which most here would view as a "good" result) still leaves you with a parts bill of 2/3 of your car budget.IMO you need something that will serve you for the required period with ZERO expenditure and when you no longer need it, can be sold or weighed as appropriate. You dont need to be spending time or money on it when your finances are so tight and you have a more worthy project waiting. andy18s
There's a f book page called cars under £300 but obviously most are around that price. A few creep on at 200ish but you gotta be quickAlso how far from Middlesborough are you? There's another page called cars under £500 and most seem to come from the Middlesbrough area for some reason. ....

Station
The best one was Volvo 440 with t&t for £150 last year, it even had fvsh, and was a very nice car. I think it's not economically sound to spend so little on a car not expecting to pay possibly hundreds on it's next impending MOT.Cheap Nippa turns expensive when you need to buy parts that you can't find in any scrapyard! I have a spare engine if you need bits.BTW Corsas are a million times more refined than a Nippa! Do you have back problems? Lol

Jimcit
A Skoda Felicia that's been patched up by the original nonagenarian owner or a 106 like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-106-1-5D-/141410553163?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item20ecb9cd4b Or take a gamble on something like this - £180 but no MOT, got to be worth more than that in parts (leather / alloys etc...) http://www.uksaabs.co.uk/UKS/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=144382

vulgalour
So yes, minor gaff on the T&T thing... it was late. The Corsa thing is an odd stipulation, I know, but I can't get on with them at all and I've tried. I've tried new ones and old ones, abused ones and cared for ones and they all just infuriate me as a driving experience. What's extra annoying is that they should be a very good little hatchback but I really would rather walk than have to drive another one. I didn't think I was being *that* fussy. I do know the budget is absurd, normally I'd want £500 to play with for a winter hack but at the moment I don't have that to spend on top of the insurance and whatever. What'll likely happen is this idea will sink after numerous unsuitable vehicles are offered and I'll just walk/rely on Mike to ferry me about. forddeliveryboy
That's actually not too bad as an idea. What, the Nissan I suggested? Alloys (for added value on scrappage if it comes to it when test is out), tax, test till April, recent new exhaust system except for the downpipe which is the only fault mentioned, two new tyres recently and a battery also. Advertised at £175? Worst feature? Parking scuffs and a knocked mirror. You're the master of understatement, Vulgalour - get on the phone and snap it up, if it hasn't already gone! I can only assume he's prepping a TRADE IN SPECIAL down the back lot. L-O-L M8! I've got nothing in for one and a half, and being honest if I did I'd probably bridge it. Facebook car sales pages usually best, but for that sort of money Vulg's going to get what he pays for. I reckon you'd ideally need £250 to get something worthwhile. Like a Corsa. I've had to stop buying them now, as they make me so attractive to the flange I would have to change my name to VULVAGALORE. robinmasters, Vince70, dave21478 and 11 others

vulgalour
The insurance is what reduced the budget to £150, see? Once you factor all the extras involved in sorting out even a cheap hack, you're not left with much when you start with a tiny budget. It's okay though, I'm shelving this probably until next year by which time the Princess should be ready, unless I've admitted defeat and scrapped the bastarding thing. forddeliveryboy
Find a source of used veg oil, 15-25p litre for really good stuff which needs little doing to it and within a year you'd struggle not to be a grand or three on top.
