EssDeeWon
Right I cannot be arsed to read through the DVLA website on the new car tax rules so what happens as of 1st October? My newly acquired car tax expires on 30/09 so I assume no more tax discs for me. Is it still renewable in 6 and 12 months periods? All 2nd hand cars in future cannot be sold with tax still remaining? Therefore, you might as well buy a car right at the start of each month or you lose up to a months rent? (If you buy and tax a car after the 25th) For example. Thanks Shiters! Craig the Princess
If I have it right you can buy online or at the post officeYou can buy 6 or 12 months or on-going monthly direct debit. Can't be transfered, you will need to tax the car when purchased (so the gubbermint get double bubble for a month each time a car sells)Automatic refunds when you sell a carTraders can't tax a car on the yellow slip, will need trade plates to do test drives! https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes EssDeeWon

Craig the Princess
I can understand getting rid of the disc as it is all computerised and ANPR now. But why can't you tax for 365 days rather than losing a part month every time you buy or sell. Would just be easier to lump an extra 3p on fuel. Mr_Bo11ox
^^^ Its crazy innit. This change doubles the bureaucracy every time a car changes hands. In practice I think it will work out OK though, when you tax a car online now you can ask for the tax to start at the beginning of the next month. If you know that the car was taxed previously when you bought it, you might as well start your tax the following month. 'On paper' you will be driving for a fortnight (or whatever) untaxed, but in actual fact the car will never have been untaxed, as the 'duty' for that period will have been paid for that month by the 'seller' - they won't get it back off DVLA. If the DVLA object to that, what they are objecting to is not being able to claim 'double' tax for that month - let them object to it in court the wankers. HillmanImp
I agree Boll, its daft. Will have to see if it is an issue when you get a speeding ticket in that period where the car is not taxed by you etc. It will still be showing as taxed on their systems but not in your name. Will they then throw the book at you? Fuck knows. Will see who is first to find out.........

richardmorris
The DVLA does seem to have been woefully inept about actually advertising what they're doing and what your options are. I am planning on putting the cars' first discs in the windscreen when the time comes - fiat's is up first in December.
CortinaDave
It annoys me. They're too tight now to even give me a measly piece of paper when I fork out over 100 notes twice a year. saucedoctor
Quite so.......Now we will have nothing at all to stick in our windscreens. We need an Autoshite no tax disc holder or something. In NI We're required to have an MoT disc in the windscreen. I'm interested to know if we still need to display those when the tax disc gets the heave-ho. So far I have asked the Police, who were at least straight up and said "Sorry, we don't know", and DVLNI who have said both "yes" and "no". Fuckwits. PiperCub
Well I might be over simplifying this but help me out here, if it's all online/autmated, why can we not tax vehicles to the day? It doesn't take a great mathematical effort to divide the year cost of tax by 365 and then multiply it by the number of days you want it taxed for. eg: my cars are all £230/yr, so that's about 60p or so a day, I want to do it for 200 days (for some reason, it doesn't matter), so I owe them £120 or thereabouts. It's not difficult is it? Or maybe it is if you are the government & the DVLA stooges. Or is it more that they want to get paid twice when vehicles change hands, keeping the part months of reclaimed tax but charging the next owner for the part of the month they haven't used because they didn't own the car then............... no, I'm certain it isn't that. vulgalour
I actually really dislike front number plates, but am ambivalent towards rear ones.
