Futuramic
What'cha gonna do, eh? My garage is very small indeed, has no electricity or lights and is the only working space I have. So room is at a premium, especially where restoration is concerned. When I got the car the body was balanced precariously atop the chassis, in a way that was no good for either it or me. To attempt any kind of restoration required a massive rethink of my storage methods. So I had one; in consultation with a few good friends down the pub. And in true "Boring Interior Design" programme style I "rethought my personal space in a holistic way, and turned my troubles into solutions" So I went to B&Q, returning with loads and loads of blue nylon rope. Breaking strain 220lbs. And this is what happened: All will become apparent..... Look! The car isn't actually resting on anything! At all! Even the Wright brothers couldn't make something so tub-like fly. Many, many ropes went into this effort. These go under the wheelarches and out through the boot. These ones support the sides. What keeps the fornt in the air. The windscreen based tying point will be revised in the future. It is temporary. These help the car go. What I have actually done is use a complex array of ropes to suspend the body from the rafters. Which are steel latticework. The system is safe, possibly, as the body is light enough for me to lift by myself. Imagine a modern car you can pick up, there aren't any. Also I have tried to use the strongest parts of the car; where the fibreglass is thick or wide. Doing this has also allowed the body to return to its natural shape, which is good. If you are thinking about doing this you will need rope and a pair of scissors.

lovejoy
Nice one !!! I also did a similar stunt with a single council garage, stored a Fiat 500 above an early Daihatsu Charade (I know, I need to get out more....) by driving the 500 backwards up ramps at the far end of said garage, then lifting the front up high enough by passing a rope over a scaffold pole suspended from a roof angle iron, and attatching it to of of my 14 Renault 12 Estates front bumper, and reversing it away from the entrance.Voila ! the small Charade snuck its bonnet under the 500's wheels, job done.(do I now qualify as a full-blown autoshitter ? (no comments please Nigel...)
pogweasel
That sounds like a genius use of space there!Kind of like those precarious Mitsi Canter transporters you see with 3 cars teetering on them with mm's of clearance. At my old house I used to hang all my bikes from the rafters and snick the car nose first underneath them, which was fine until I swapped the car for a Berlingo van, and the door wouldn't shut (hit the back of the van). Putting SWMBO's car in there? Well that was so much more trouble than it was worth, I shan't bore you with the details, but it involves scrapes and tantrums. Then, £500 a year to store a dead Fiesta becomes £500 to store 2. Here's hoping their values make like RWD Escorts...
VWPowered
my dads was metallic blue with a giant eagle painted on the bonnet...tried to turn into a convertable and the boot etc came off with the roof, following this one with great interest
