Selling the Renner Five

Due to a surplus of small hatchbacks in the fleet and the fact that this is the time of year when my left knee starts playing up and makes it awkward to drive a manual in rush hour traffic, I've decided to sell the 5. I'll be using the Colt to drive to work in through the winter 'cos it's an auto. I put the 5 up on Retro Rides (link here), but the response has been rather underwhelming, so I thought I'd mention it on here to see if anyone's interested before I put it out to the tender mercies of eBay...

I thought your 5 was an early one! The last service cost £565 !! I thought servicing an old car would be £100 here, £100 there for routine stuff not a complete overhaul of the sort of biblical proportions one sees with the servicing schedule of 'moderns'? :shock:

Nope. Mr Bickle's is an early one. Far more interesting than mine, but far less practical as a daily, being 845cc and very low geared.

I was surprised myself. I think the garage went over the top to be honest, but at least it shouldn't need any more major expenditure in the near future.

Huh. I'll have you know that mine may only be 850cc -but its all raw power! It motors happily at the legal limit (no -not 30 -70!) and I use it regularly on pretty long work trips. I covered 180 miles in it t'other day -no worries.Coming 'off road' soon though- for winter.Sorry to see you selling Wuz -good luck and a sensible price I hope

Glad you're getting some good use out of it. I was basing my comments on a conversation I had with Dollywobbler about the car, and my own experiences with an 845cc R4, plus I've always felt uncomfortable running an old engine flat out for long periods of time - having witnessed your arrival at the bubble car museum in the Datsun I realise that this is not a qualm you share. :wink: I daresay an 845cc 5 would do 70 easily enough though - the Innocenti feels quite comfortable at 70 and that's got 186 less cc and four less horsepower - it just wouldn't be quite as relaxed as the GTL's 3000-revs-at-70 fifth gear.

I concur - I had an 850cc 5L as my first car, and although not in the first flush of youth by any means it could easily hold it's own up to the legal limit. And I used it a lot - just as getting a moped in the 6th form expanded my horizons after a pushbike the Renault moved them back to a point I could barely see at that age. Happy memories indeed :DI had a couple more of them later on, each as good as the first - a 1978 GTL and a 1984 Le Car II. Hope yours finds a good home, wuvvum.
